I'm going to be DJing in a couple of weeks. I'm told I can play what I want provided it's cute and has a spring in its step. Thus far, I'm thinking of playing... Super Maria: Au coeur du Tricatel, Senor Coconut: Home Computer, Jorge Ben: Cade Teresa, AR Kane: A Love from Outer Space, Charlotte Leslie: Les Filles C'est Fait Pour Faire L'Amour (what a title!), Girls on Top: Scrubs. Can you point me in the direction of anything you think might work, especially (but not exclusively) recent releases?

Kraftwerk--"The Model", Daft Punk--"Digital Love", Human League-- "Fascination"

Crucial questions: do you want your audience to dance or not? How much do they know about music?

Tom, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They're going to attend on the premise that one of the DJs is Japanese but loves English music, another is English but loves Japanese music and I'm the third. The Japanese connection suggests that the audience will have a certain, let's say, broader perspective. As for dancing, the answer is yes yes yes.

'The More I See You' - Chris Montez 'Georgy Girl' - The Seekers 'The Boat That I row' - Lulu 'Ce Petit Coeur' - Francoise Hardy 'Just Like Eddie' - Silicon Teens, and (from the same album as Charlotte Leslie) 'Saperlipopette', by Clothilde.

This genre of cute music horrifies me!

Family Fodder. Not their 2001 release, that one was a definite DUD.

Takako Minekawa, possibly 800 Cherries, possibly Godzuki, possibly France Gall ...

April March? Dee-Lite?

Sean, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aye...France Gall is a must! Also the Lollipop Train album & Marian Napoleon's 'Aerial View of the City' would go down well.

Jez, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

.France Gall is a must!
Yeah especially the 80s stuff. ;-)

I'd call Avalanches' "Since I Left You" cute.

Mark, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

March records stuff seems to be the consensus. March = cute ho ho.

Sarah, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And ur yeah, playing stuff from Roomic Cube or the remixes is defintely the way to go to get people dancing... all the way out of the club, screaming no doubt. There's only a few bits of Takako which I would call 'cute', the same with Kahimi Karie, people always shove her in this cute little girl jpop role when she's done some mad screwed up stuff in her time.

Ooh don't...I spent a weekend in Paris dying to listen to a Francoise Hardy album & when I got home I noticed it was recorded in 1977. Enough said.

Sarah: I actually only mentioned Minekawa because I can't imagine why any DJ would choose not to spin "Plash" at some point. The body of her work isn't "cute," yeah, but part of what I like about her "Plash"-type songs is the way they come across as coming from an alternate universe where hip-hop hits are cute and bubbly. Actually, now that I think about it, fascinating to compare "Plash" itself with Timbaland's remix of "Turn Out the Light."
