The Dissociatives C or D?

This has been out for ages but they just sent the radio station a promo. It's that guy from Silverchair in some kind of Postal Service situation. I haven't heard recent Silverchair but wtf planet am I on? First track is goofy as fuck. What do you the SE hemisphere folks think of this stuff?

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

They're pretty bad, but the cover art is horrifying:

I really like it, but I realize that I'm most likely in the minority.

Xii (Xii), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

I had to turn it off after track 4. Are there later tracks I should jump straight to when I try it out again in a day or eight?

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I cannot comment.

moley, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

I love them, but its hard to see the who the musics aimed at. I'm pretty sure Silverchair fans will dismiss it as too poppy but i doubt it'll be popular enough to chart. They're big in Australia though, apparently.

dmun, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Awful. Awful. Awful.

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

the other guy (who looks like a petty crim from a aussie soap) is paul mac btw. he used to be part of a group that partly dear to all of our hearts

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

50% partly :)

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

yes i like exactly half too!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

I am SO staying away from this thread.

moley, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

FITE! Cherry 2000 vs Dissociatives!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Colin totally OTM on art direction, it's fuckin hideous. Apparently the dude who did it all won the ARIA for best video. Yeesh.

Mil (Mil), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

i haven't listened to it enough to work out if the lyrics are as bad as the last silverchair album

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

Was it the same guy who did that bumblebees video?

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Was it the same guy who did that bumblebees video?

Yeah, I think so. He also did a video for the Dissociatives and the Andrew Denton intro.

Last winter in Sydney, Dissociatives posters were fucking everywhere. I don't even know if I trust my dislike of the band, because those images just make me wanna rip my face off.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

absolutely horrible.

their backing band is made up of two guys who have their own thing called the presets, which is far better. check them out instead.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Nah. Its a completely normal reaction to not like it. You either will or won't, the album only gets weaker as it plays towards the end.

I really liked it when it came out, but I don't feel strongly enough to try to sway anyone.

Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

D. Johns has never made a less-than ludicrously appalling note of music in his life, and this showed no signs of him planning to start.

kit, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

if Xii likes it it can't be all bad - he has fine taste in underground music!

moley (moley), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

what does miccio think? he has fine taste in mainstream music for young folk.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realise the Presets guys were in this. Their "Girl And The Sea" EP is pretty good, might appeal to some of the Cut Copy fans here.

'haitch' (haitch), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

col how come you don't hook up with - fuck, i dunno - dave faulkner or someone for a matching project?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

ella hooper is the obvious choice

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

o yes.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Nicki Webster?

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

depends on how bad her lyrics are

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

"I've been missing your strawberry kisses" work for you?

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm currently hooking up with S*mon D*y of R*tca*t.

moley (moley), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

"Go Go" = Aussie party classic that Ned would surely appreciate.

moley, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

mole you shit me not?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

is he a dick?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

i like them well enough. They're better than Silverchair at least. Ignore the lyrics and just sing along.

Anyway, recent Silverchair doesn't sound anything like old Silverchair other than the fact that it's just as bad.

rosie, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realise the Presets guys were in this.

Thus the Presets mix of Much Preferred Customers as a b-side on the first (?) single.

Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

As I understand it, not in the band so much as in the live touring band.

moley, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

I like them, sort of.
But I went to the live show and actually dissociated...

Katie. (Argh.), Thursday, 24 March 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

cough

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 24 March 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

Moley's new pal (and exciting news!) has always seemed a charming fellow when I or friends have chatted to him, but I guess he could be a dick in the world of Collabo (he never could hold onto a bass player frex)

and yeah the Presets/Prop kids are the "play instruments for live shows" factor of Dissociatives

kit, Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

and i'm about to go see them!

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Thursday, 24 March 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
how was it? are they faring well in the big bad world of overseas touring?

moley, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

ten years pass...

'somewhere down the barrel' is a gorgeous slice of 90's pop-rock, from 2004

the rest of the album is largely bad (hell, 'somewhere down the barrel' is bad, really, but i love it)

rahrah avis (imago), Friday, 26 June 2015 23:58 (ten years ago)

it's basically an early SFA song (like 'ice hockey hair', which it sounds like) atomsmashed into a Lusk song (like 'doctor', which it ends up sounding a bit like as well)
