Eddie Vedder Does a Cover of "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"

Just flipped through the radio and tuned into this. A quick Google check showed that this on the soundtrack to the new Sean Penn film, which has been out a few weeks, so I must be behind the curve re this.

It's like, I'm not even a big Beatles fan or anything. But Jesus H. Christ, HAS THIS ASSHOLE NO SHAME? Why doesn't someone just go up to him and say, "You're so FUCKING LAME! You're a UNTALENTED DICKHEAD WHO GOT LUCKY because of KURT COBAIN! No-one CARES what you DO, THINK, OR SING! Just go away, you STUPID FUCK." Why the fuck do folks like George Harrison, Joey Ramone, Biggie, Zappa, Cobain, and John Lennon all have to die, but COCKROACHES like Beddie Wedder have to keep living and stinking up the airwaves?!?!

Phew ... I sound like dave q. on his "Three Eye Blind/Sugar Ray" thread now!

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If this were just another lame-ass, pedestrian cover of a well-known song, perhaps I'd think nothing of it. But, as with everything else that Eddie Vedder touches, it so reeks of smugness and condescension that I can't help but want to projectile- vomit. I mean, the whole thing drips with the attitude of, "Oh, I'm not worthy of the honor of singing a John Lennon song, and I'm really doing it only because my good buddy Sean Penn asked me to, and I'm going to treat the song as if it were a precious 14th-century Ming Dynasty vase but I'm doin' it all for THE FANS, MAN!" Just like Vedder had to sing Dylan and Little Steven (gaaaaak!) songs at a Ralph Nader rally (and of course it had to be Nader, not Bush or Gore [god forbid! lest his commitment to "progressive causes" be questioned!]). Or had to have a feckless campaign against TicketMaster, an institution justly hated by countless American concert-goers, but because the campaign was so hamhanded TicketMaster emerged stronger than ever. It's like some mad scientist took the worst personality traits of Jackson Browne, Sting, Nathalie Merchant, and the biggest faux- campus-"revolutionary"-strumming-a-guitar-"sensitive poet" Trustafarian and made the ultimate Frankenstein's monster.

Or maybe I need some sleep. And to stop listening to FM radio altogether!

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Why the fuck do folks like George Harrison, Joey Ramone, Biggie, Zappa, Cobain, and John Lennon all have to die'

Partial answer - Biggie and Lennon, by nature of their iconic starriness, attracted the kind of people who took things RILLY seriously. George and Frank liked their cigarettes, like Bob Marley liked his weed. (I'm not finger-wagging, I probably smoke more than them put together.) As for Cobain, the psychology of junkies is not something I'm qualified to discuss in depth.

Eddie Vedder, though. What an asshole. That 'pro-choice' article he wrote in 'Spin', "If my child had been born I'd have to be at home raising it, instead of touring the world singing to you." Thanks for giving the right-wing lobby 10,000 years worth of ammunition, fuckwad. And 'Spin' are even bigger jerks for publishing it without some derogatory comment added.

dave q, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Great answer, dave. I'd forgotten about that Spin pro-choice thing. And I think I know why Vedder will live on like a cockroach -- he probably eats a "macrobiotic diet" and "organic foods." It would fit the character.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pearl Jam are a truly horrible band, and Vedder is no doubt a big fat doofus (I still cringe at the memory of a post-Cobain int. w/ EV where he shared Kurt's pain big-time and talked abt giving up music - yeah right). But I have to say he CAN be a gd singer - he sings a fine version of 'Against The 70s' on that Mike Watt superstar solo alb, for instance.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If Mike Watt can make Ed Crawford's guitar playing sound good, imagine waht he can do for Eddie Vedder. (just kidding - Crawford is the coolest.)

Dave225, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe it's his way of coming out.

N., Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's nothing. Wait 'til you hear Ben Harper's version of Strawberry Fields. Yeegods, talk about smug and smarmy. I HATE BEN HARPER!!!!!!!!!!! HE IS THE ANTI-CHRIST!!!!!! He's the only "funky" authentic afro-american marketed to a whiter audience than Lenny Kravitz. At least Eddie Vedder knows who Split Enz is.

Mickey Black Eyes, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am baffled by Mickey's last comment. Have Vedder and Harper been in some pop quiz showdown?

N., Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not crazy about Vedder, but I suppose Pearl Jam had their moment. What I really hate is the influence he's had on an entire generation of vocalists.

Sean, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, Ben and Eddie are both featured on the I Am Sam album, covering Beatles tunes along with Sarah McLachlan, Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright, Black Crowes, Aimee Mann, Paul Westerberg, Grandaddy, Nick Cave, Heather Nova, and other assorted non-V2 oddities that I can't remember at the moment. Most of them are, of course, quite superfluous, but I think there's a couple that are a little shocking.

Mickey Black Eyes, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where do Split Enz come into it?

N., Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh right, that. Sorry, that WAS a bit of a non-sequitor. Apparently Ben and Eddie were on stage with Neil doing a cover and Ben later wasn't too clear on who Split Enz was/were.

Mickey Black Eyes, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Green River was cool.

Andy, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tadeusz: No-one CARES what you DO, THINK, OR SING!
You seem to, though. ;)

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i love pearl jam / eddie vedder.

stevie, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My longstanding argument about Pearl Jam is this -- all the good songs on the first album are the ones that *didn't* become hit singles.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Instead of ragging on Pearl jam we should be ragging on the 5241 bands that try to sound like them. Sounds like everyone of these bands is sharing the same whiny ass vocalist.

Pump Wellington, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
Hey Tadeusz,

I will start by addressing you're comment about dead artists. It is traggic that all of these artists are dead. Each of them were very unique and changed the face of music forever (except maybe Zappa and Biggie). And oh yeah, you forgot a few, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Jim Morrison (BIGGIE WHO). However, you really need to let your frustration with Vedder go. He, like it or not, is one of the most influential vocalists of the past 20 years and not just because the band he plays in has sold millions of records. He (and the band) along with numerous other groups/artists have spent many hours and $$$$ trying to do nothing more then help others. Who are you to sit up high on your bean bag and critisize him or cheapen what he and many others have done. When was the last time you gave freely of yourself and your money to help others? Have you ever? Or better yet, have you ever had to humble yourself by accepting a helping hand? Have you ever known what it is like to depend on the generousity of others to get along? If you have, did you criticize the person behind that hand. If so your so fucking lost you might as well stop reading.

I suppose EV just does it for the publicity right? Just because he wants to stand up and say "hey look at what a great fucking guy I am. Look at what a pretty voice I have and look at what I stand for, I'm just fucking great". Well, if you think that you are a even more of a fuck then I thought and you haven't even been paying attention. I'm probably just wasting my time responding to you (because you obviously have a serious case of rectal-cranium inversion and no idea what you're talking about). To my knowledge PJ does more on less press then any band going (and has for over 10 years). All their shows are sold out, all of their tickets are affordable, all of their fans (at least at the shows I've been to) and good people who care about each other and the music. Hell, I even think I read somewhere that Bono compared them to the Dead (whata fucking complement). And they have done all of this, like the Dead, without playing themselves out on MTV or radio. BTW, seen Fred Durst lately?

See, this is what you don't understand. It's not about what others think, it's about what feels right to yourself and the band. By all means, if you don't like it, don't listen, that is your God given right. I am American, so I think it's great that you have your opinion and can call them cocksucking posers who (gulp) got lucky because Kurt Cobain was conceived. But now you have to be a man and hear my opinion (or not). Now don't get me wrong, I thought Cobain was great. He was in a very popular and talented BAND that is still influencing others. However, I also think Cobain was a bit of a whinner, an addict, and ultimately a quiter who couldn't think of anything else other then applying a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Is this your hero? Is this your answer? Do we want to listen to his words? Do we really care what he did or thought? Sadly, the answer is yes. Nevertheless, when my children ask me about Kurt I will tell them he was very talented but he was also very human. He couldn't think of others because he didn't feel comfortable in his own skin (and this is the key to life man). But, like PJ, he loved music and if it had only been the music he still might be with us today. But, unlike any other great artist that died too soon, he decided to off himself. So in my opinion, he was selfish and weak, but he did it on his terms so I guess he had balls. I just wish he would have used his brain instead of his balls.

So the next time you go bashing Eddie or anyone else that has the intelligence to recognize that they are unique (and talented whether you like it or not) and tries to use that uniqueness to SELFLESSLY help others just remember this. The flame is very hot and most burn out before they are done. However, EV and PJ have remained consistent and unwavering in their convictions and beliefs. To me and many others this is the true sign of talent and character. If you compromise yourself, what else do you have.

DE

Daren Everly, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Each of them were very unique and changed the face of music forever (except maybe Zappa

See, here's your problem -- I think Tad won't care about anything else you say given this assertion! ;-)

But now you have to be a man

Would it have mattered if Tad was a woman? Actually, *is* Tad a woman? Does DE know something we don't? Or does he think remarks like that don't carry their implied baggage? I think I have my answer. ;-)

when my children ask me about Kurt I will tell them he was very talented but he was also very human.

Implying you think Eddie is talented but...inhuman! Eight foot tall lizard people! Acid for blood! RUN!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If Eddie Vedder had died after "Black" had come out, people would think he was a genius. Remember back when _Ten_ came out and Pearl Jam seemed mostly harmless? Who knew that one day we'd have to endure POD?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or Staind even. *runs off cackling*

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Staind has some songs that are good! (Although, I do find myself humming "Youth Of The Nation" every now and then. GRUNGE WILL NEVER DIE, BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-OTCH!)

"And the award for 'Most Inappropriate Use Of The Word "BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-OTCH!"' goes to... DAN PERRY!" *applause*

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Neither of those clowns are as bad as Nickelback.

This is how you remind of how bad bands can suck.

Nicole, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nicole, you are much wiser than Ned and I. I would like to see Nickelback stoned. (Um. You know what I mean.)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I could deal with seeing Nickelback stoned That Other Way, Dan. Particularly if it was some *bad* heroin and they were about to die. And yes, Nicole against demonstrates her Considerate Wisdom.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i can't believe you assholes i mean wtf do you have against Eddie Vedder he is a great artist and has one of the best bands out there today that survived out of the early 90's alternative rock explosion and i heard the song "you've got to hide your love away" for the 1st time today and i think it is fucking awesome so if you guys don't like it kiss my ass i think it is a good song and Eddie Vedder is a great artist in his own right although i do agree w/the question you asked of why all great artists have to die i mean i have a profound respect for Kurt Cobain George Harrison and Joey Ramone i mean the ramones the beatles and nirvana are three of my all time favorite bands i mean not to brag but i have over 30 Nirvana cds and to me pearl jam is just as good of a band as the 3 i stated previous and i think you just are saying that cuz of the fact that pearl jam and nirvana had a public feud but they are both great bands in their own right i don't know who all will read this or who will care for that matter but these are my oppinions and if you don't like them you can kiss my ass!!!!

Raymond Robinson, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eddie Vedder does anything except knock himself unconcious = dud.

Some Eddie Vedder anagrams:
de de derived

I think we can safely say that Eddie Vedder is SO CRAP he doesn't even have any amusing anagrams of his name.

Eddie Wedder isn't a cockroaches, he have potitical concience, he have talent, he is great composer and great singer. Ed is againt the mother fucker of Bush (only for that I love Ed). And if you don't understand this I say you in spanish: Eddie Wedder es como dios (is like god), esta muy por encima de Kobain, él tiene mucho mas talento que Harrison, y tiene la mente abierta no como tu grandisimo hijo de puta, facista de mierda!!!

ok.
FIRSTLY, I think you are overlooking an obvious reality : and I ask myself - why the fuck does it matter if Eddie is an asshole or not (and my arguments against that label will follow shortly) as long as what really ever reaches into your petty existence is their MUSIC?
what's that got to do with anything?? their music is trully original and passionate and genuine, and the fact that it has affected so many generations so deep more than proves it.
Does it make any of you dicks feel better if you attack him?
he's just another person, who is trying to live his own life and survive by doing what he has always loved. And I raise my glass to that. And I wish him all the happiness he deserves. Or are you envious of this? well he worked hard to get where he is. And he has had to struggle a great deal to make something decent of himself and I really don't see why he is a thorn in YOUR pathetic little rears. Has he wronged you PERSONALLY in any way? Has he brought any offense to YOU? Is it so hard to choose to believe that he actually means what he sais? That he fought TicketMaster FOR the fans? That he puts himself out there every time FOR the fans? Why the hell don't you just back off and leave the man alone?
I deeply admire him for what he is. Can you honestly say that it is EASY to be completely honest about yourself with complete strangers 24-7? To let loose your emotions and DEAL with whatever plagues your life instead of hiding behind some keyboard and a monitor and a modem? To stand up for what you believe in? To have the strength to be all that you can be? And on top of that to have the strength to stop and help others? Litterally reach into their lives, TOTAL STRANGERS, and try to make as much of a difference as you can? SELFLESSLY????
What do YOU all have to show for yourselves that gives you the right to pick on this man?
Just because he is up there in the spotlight doesn't mean that he is up there for you to point accusating and judgemental fingers at him.

you don't like their music? DON'T LISTEN TO IT! you don't like the band or Eddie? KEEP IT TO YOURSELF UNLESS YOU CAN ACTUALLY SUPPLY MATURE AND RATIONAL ARGUMENTS!

Oh man!
I can scarcely believe my eyes when I read this garbage! It hurts down to the pit of my soul to believe that we, as human beings, can be so disgruntled and blatantly rude to others simply because of the music that we listen to, or the "rock stars" that we idolize. When it comes right down to it.....who really cares? Yourself, right? Why do we have to be subject to your infantile views and ignorant rantings on the subject of a particular musician?! If you don't like Ed Vedder, so be it. Let it go........it's all gonna be okay. Perhaps there is a prescription that would help you out with your anger management issues. I imagine that if you ever met Ed, you'd think he was a pretty cool guy. You might even see eye to eye on a few issues. You might even break down and admit that hey......maybe I CAN just let this hatred go.......why am I holding on to it anyways? Just makes me ugly.........ugly.

Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam rule. The war he waged on Ticketmaster was admirable, and it was too bad he had to cave in the end.

Pearl Jam are unfortunately lumped in with that whole "Stone Temple Pilots pseudo-grunge" movement which has more to do with their geography (YEA I KNOW STP WERE FROM CALI FUCK YOU) than anything.

Riot Act was one of their better albums, and they've done more than enough to satisfy me.

Eddie Vedder rules, hands down. He can put people off now and then, but ultimately, he's not afraid to speak his mind.

uh, Sunday, 25 April 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, this whole conversation is nothing but a giant group circle jerk, taking a half-serious smug quote out of context, and excessive indie-rage hyperbole.

In other words, it's stupid.

uh, Sunday, 25 April 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The Nader argument was the most retarded thing on the planet, as well. A good portion of the thinking Left disliked Gore heavily as well.

Of course, however, he must have supported Nader for his 'own needs', because any member of a band who has sold more than 20,000 copies of an album in their career can't possibly have political convictions.

You fucking idiot.
