I read more about music than I listen to it

Really. Over the last year, I think this has been slowly coming true. And I think I find the reading and discussing more fulfilling than the listening. Is this true of you at all?

I think this may be a result of anyone being able to have an opinion on any music no matter how little they know about it new answers!

Bill, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've found this happening to me occasionally. What then happens is that my listening becomes stale and my writing about it becomes rubbish. The solution - listen while you read and write.

Tom, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I spend much more time reading about music that listening to it. This is becuase I can read ILM at work but listening to music would be taking the piss. I have no doubt my listening is very stale indeed.

I listen to music while reading ILM. but i usually turn it off when I am trying to take part in intelligent discourse cos I'm stupid like that.

So you read about bands that make music you might never hear?

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't really listen to music whilst reading or writing - it always acts as too much of a distraction in both directions. I remember when revising for a-levels intentionally not listening to anything as it was the only way to get myself to concentrate. I should probably stick to my tried and tested method of years which is listening when in bed but recently this has been annoying me as well. What I hope is that going away for quite a long time as I am about to do will leave me eager to actually listen again when I get back...

Bill, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Helen: Certainly when I write about bands I try to write something that someone who might never hear them would still find interesting or entertaining. God knows whether I ever succeed or not but that's the idea.

Tom, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oops, sorry, confused there for a split second. I do read a lot of music I will never hear. One reason is that I am not interested in hearing everything out there (anymore).

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's too bad. There are worlds of sound waiting for you to discover, you know?

Gage-o, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Trail of the UnHip?

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Broken Perfectly good musical instruments we destroy.

re "I can't really listen to music whilst reading or writing"

It's getting to where I can't listen to music whilst not reading or plugged into some other media feed - TV (on mute), Web, magazine over keyboard, remotes heaped on end table like snack sticks. Maybe I'm not "really" listening.

Curt, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its really easy to listen to music while doing the dishes.
It's very hard to read about music while doing the dishes. The pages get wet and the ink starts to run.

Lord Custos, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's gone so far that I can only listen to musick while standing on my head reading ILM

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's gone so far that I can only listen to musick while standing on my head reading ILM

That sounds like "indie listening" to me.

Mark, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

95% listening 5% reading.

jel, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, Mark. Only I need someone to change the records of course. Can someone get me the Minor Threat LP. Thanks.

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have this rare blue vinyl copy of MINOR THREAT'S "Bottle Hate" EP with IAN MCCULLOUGH singing.

Gage-o, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gage-o is not going to let me live that one down...it's not like I mistook him for Ian Anderson.

Mark, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I read more about books nowadays than I read the books themselves. I find it nearly impossible to read read books while reading about them.

Curt, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry Mark, I couldn't help it. And helenfordsdale just set it up to perfectly.

Gage-o, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But I really don't care about 'real' listening! It's just doing things at once is not good! for me! (cause I don't like it)

Bill, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Music GOOD! Reading GOOD! TV BAD!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think you forget that I am not a Buffy watcher. ;-)
