Daft Punk - Ha!

Emperor's new clothes, etc, etc....So here come the reviews and they're unanimous: the new album sucketh big-time. At last, the foot-and-mouth crisis is claiming some sacred cows. Let's hope some more hitherto critic-proof acts are not far behind - yes, I'm looking at you Bonny 'Prince' Billy, and you Jim White and Smog and Calexico/Giant Sand. Away with ye washed-out vocals and maudlin' GothTwang....

Alex Alexi, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And....so?

Nicole, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is this the same album that got a really good review in NME?

alex thomson, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only one I've read so far was Lisa Verrico's one in today's Times. She ends her review:
Hardcore clubbers will be appalled, no doubt, but if you're in on the joke you'll find it's rather fun. Discovery is a clever, complex wildly energetic album that sounds like nothing else you'll hear all hear and everything you've heard before. Oh, and it should make you smile.

I'm not sure what it means, but I think it's saying it sucks.

Nick, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

err.. Make that 'don't think'

Nick, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I haven't read ANY bad reviews of Daft Punk in press, actually. What "unanimous" reviews are YOU reading? I think the only sensible question is, am I on crack or is he?

Ally, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In my capacity as a journalist I've had the album with me for a week so, and I must say that I was disappointed at first since it's been hyped everywhere (Dotmusic, The Face, Mixmag) as the most modern and exciting thing you're most likely to hear this year. In reality, it's actually rather retro sounding, and its eighties affectations don't have much to do with 'Homework', which I adore.

But I've been listening to 'Discovery' constantly, and it really is a great, great album, delightfully fresh and crisp, with plenty lovely touches and actually quite a lot of trademark Daft Punk intricate madness, though it's not immediately obvious 'cause of the inititially bewildering 80s coating. The track with Todd Edwards on vocals, for example, sounds like a cross-fertilization between 'Windowlicker' and Miami Vice. And it sounds gorgeous.

As far as sacred cows go, Daft Punk remain pretty damn fabulous.

Tonci Kozul, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wtf is NME? every 3 posts i read has a refrence to it..some british mag or something?

Kevin Enas, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NME http://www.nme.com

a British weekly music newspaper, and a website.

DJ Martian, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Looking thru today's UK press, it does seem to take a bit of drubbing...

Guardian (lengthy review, 2 stars out 5): 'Most of Discovery probably sounded like a good idea at the time, but there's not much point in having ideas if they don't work...There's the lingering suspicion that if [the track] Something About Us were the work of Mike & the Mechanics rather than two trendy French blokes wearing "ironic' robot helmets, everyone would think it was rubbish'

Mirror (1 star out of 5): 'Downright laughable...best avoided'

Independent: 'Discovery presumes that the only thing more amusing than cheesy Eighties disco riffs is the robotic synthesiser recreation of chessy Eighties disco riffs - as if irony might magically render bad music good. [It] has all the personality of an aerobics video...'

stephen mcentee, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seeing as the three papers just mentioned have no business covering music period, let alone dance music, i'm not particularly peturbed. Surely the combined clout of Mixmag, The Face, Jockey Slut, Q, NME and Fred count for something?

Tim, Friday, 9 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*snickers* The dance king himself.

The same papers listed give Radiohead fantastic reviews. Take as you will. As far as I can tell, the album is out rather s hortly. Go listen to it and decide for yourself. Don't read reviews. Reviews are crap. They are ONE PERSON'S opinion, a person that you don't even know. I hate reviews and reviewers, including myself.

Ally, Saturday, 10 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Still looking good, i only heard 'Discovery'on the radio a few weeks ago and that track was already brilliant , what with the Van Halen style tap-on guitar. By what I've been reading up till now I get the impression that you'll like this album if a) you have sense of humor b) you were a teenager in the 80s c) you're not a house-purist. d) you don't demand a carbon copy of "Homework".

Omar, Saturday, 10 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's some wonderful vertiginous logic in Ally's comment (and which I wholeheartedly agree with): If 'I hate reviewers (including myself)' not only do I hate myself, but I am reviewing myself at the very moment at which I hate myself for reviewing myself. I review and I can't stop. Or maybe even 'I review therefore I am! And it sucks.' HOW COOL IS THIS!

alex thomson, Sunday, 11 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

People who can't get off on hype are silly. Discovery is the best album ever made. I can say this in the perfect confidence of not having heard it. In a way, it would be better if it never actually comes out.

Can we have a moratorium on the word "irony" in I Love Music? If David Eggers wants to come and contribute, he can use it if he wants.

Tom, Sunday, 11 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom -- I hope your suggestion that David Eggers could come and contribute was itself ironic. Please???

alex thomson, Sunday, 11 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom nails it. And "thankfully" the label seems to go through one of those "this is a big release lets delay it into oblivion" sort of phases. Now it comes out on tuesday :( I'm not a superstitious fellow but my, i'm getting flash-backs of "Use Your Illusion" and "Saturn Returnz"...The famous "wait, delay, wait, delay...I don't care anymore" cycle.

Omar, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

more reviews are coming in:

-andrew harrison of q thinks it sets a new benchmark for dance music and gives it 5 stars.

-ben ratliff of rolling stone thinks there are too many in-jokes, but on the other hand, he's also puzzled by "one more time." he does see fit to give it 3 stars, though.

-bob remstein of wall of sound is not amused and gives it a failing grade. then again, he also implies that herbie hancock's "rockit" is a bad thing, casting the whole of his opinion into DOUBT.

such wildy differing reviews. yes, yes, this is going to be good.

fred solinger, Monday, 12 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Discovery is the Deserters' Songs of dance music.

Tom, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the deserters songs of dance music?

shit, i was hoping it was going to be good.

gareth, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm now into my second full length listen of 'Discovery' and what a work of strange beauty it is (the opening duo One More Time/Aerodynamic is the best opening of an album since whenever...) I have to agree with Tonci's comments above that despite's its 80s signs it isn't a easy album. 'Digital Love' is a bit puzzling (I mean really: Supertramp House? ;) After the cute 80s stuff it also gets much more dancier (around 'Superheroes')than we maybe were led to expect, the shifting.cutting.phasing disco-breaks are now reaching some Platonic Ideal. I'm afraid there's no way we're going to escape the album this summer (it's going to be everywhere).

I'm leaning towards a Kid A of dance music description, but only regards critical reception ;) I've got it! Discovery is the Abbey Road of dance music. Other suggestions?

Omar, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yup, I'm with Omar, three listens in and it's an awesome record. A thing of much beauty, some complexity, and a fuck of a lot of speaker-pasting neighbour-unfriendly bass-lines. Oh and a couple of awful puns -- Veridis quo??? Shocking.

And with reference to the original question, the Bonnie Prince Billy record is also shit-hot.

alex thomson, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's almost scary how good 'Discovery' gets after repeated listens, it's overwhelming. Anyway for anyone who wants to read my review of the album just go to: http://www.kindamuzik.net/beats/index.shtml

Omar, Thursday, 15 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar - I'm up for being overwhelmed. I'll get 'Discovery' today and report back.

Dr. C, Thursday, 15 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I feel it only fair to warn those up for an overwhelming that what you will in fact 'discover' (ho ho), is a house album with novelty metal guitars on two tracks and a ZX Spectrum speech synthesiser.

Tanya, Thursday, 15 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sounds like my kind of album then.

Dr. C, Thursday, 15 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just opened the new Face and jumped with joy at a big interview with Air, new album coming out soon. Now I'm sure Tanya (who is of course absolutely right in her description of Discovery) will disagree but 2001, with Daft Punk, Ladytron, The Avalanches, new work by Air and Basement Jaxx already looks like the best year in pop since..erm...1991? No?

Omar, Thursday, 15 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ladytron?? Tsch. I already have my Human League records, thanks.

I'm not sure if 2001 will be a great year for pop or not: with the focus group a couple of months away I was idly toying with what to suggest for inclusion (since I'm not compere-ing this time) and I couldn't think of anything that leapt to mind as being a classic that wasnt out at the end of last year or from a 2000 album, except that Shaggy record and even then I'm not totally sold on it.

Tom, Thursday, 15 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The lack of singles so far is probably more of a reflection of album release schedules than some low-tide moment for pop. The example of an excellent new single that immediately popped into my head was "Get Your Freak On", and Missy's album isn't coming out till mid-May, which is when everything of note seems to be released. As we get closer to that time I imagine a whole raft of potential inclusions from '01 will start popping up.

Tim, Thursday, 15 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

five months pass...
A question I wanted to ask on the first go 'round: My copy of Discovery is defective and I can't listen to the last three tracks. The place I bought it from is in another town so returning it is not an option. Should I buy a new copy? I haven't yet, but I wonder what I'm missing. I like Discovery quite a bit, but hate to pay another $15 for three tracks, partic. if they're nothing great. So how does the album finish?

Mark, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark- If you've got the time, the inclination and the technology, you could download the last 3 songs and then burn a copy of the CD with the tracks added.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mitch -- I have none of these! Hence my request for information.

Mark, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like the last three tracks, the album definitely ends on a high. Specifically:

Short Circuit - psychotic electro filled out with acid 303 mania that collapses into a bizarre, abrasive downbeat outro that sounds like a decomposing Boards Of Canada track.

Face To Face - one of the best pop songs of the album (up there with "One More Time" and "Digital Love"), a straightforward early-sounding vocal-house thing that implausibly reminds me of "Vogue", although it's more romantically themed. Todd Edwards is brought on board both to sing and to work some of his cut-up production magic in the chorus.

Too Long - a lot of people say this Romanthony-fronted ten-minute track is a let-down, but I love it. Sort of the inverse of "One More Time", it takes absolutely ages to get going but culminates in driving house with really miasmic-sounding synths.

Tim, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Discovery is the Deserters' Songs of dance music

the more i look at this statement Tom, the more i am utterly confused. this is perhaps the most baffling thing i have heard you say (you are, of course, very rarely baffling, but in this instance certainly). i think i would like this statement to be extrapolated, i would like to know what you are driving at with this

They've finished the anime videos for the whole album! DVD release before end of year. Yay!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

They are truly great.

dave q, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Odd I never said anything about this before. Good album but I'll be damned if I can remember anything past the first five songs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i've only ever wanted to listen to only half the tracks, but funnily enough this morning i had a real urge to put the whole thing on as 'Superheroes' has been in my head a lot lately - i've been casually imagining what the other videos for the other tracks would be like for the last 2 years. and this reminds me its really high time i bought 'D.A.F.T.' on DVD also.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

it's funny that they still haven't toured though right ?
the album's more than 2 years old !!

where *are* they ?

i want a tour !!!

piscesboy, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

unless they're planning on getting real people, including one midget, to wear blue body paint and mime, then i guess they will not be touring until a new album emerges in another year or two (hopefully)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard anything after "Rollin' and Scratchin'" on this album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 June 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yes! "ghetto children", "roller rink", that beautiful "hope you miss your flight" song!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 June 2003 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I sorta realised my reaction was mainly due to my original kelis exposure being "caught out there", "mafia" & that burtonesque video for "Get Along With You" (haha "mars" (due to trife!) but I usually wanted to hear that in context of other stuff), so obv. embarassment of riches at the start, & I keep forgetting that "Game Show" is really good & that wacky voice it starts off (as annoying as that wacky random soap opera girl on the So Solid album) provokes album switch-offage sometimes.

Ess Kay (esskay), Thursday, 19 June 2003 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Rockin good news about the cd-r, thanks!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 19 June 2003 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Ess Kay lots of the best tracks on Lord Willin are in the second half - "Ego" and "Gangsta Lean" and "I'm Not You"!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 19 June 2003 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

a kaleidoscope divided cannot stand. (both sides are just as good and important!).

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't say that the second half of the albums weren't excellent, it's just that the opening is so good it's exhausting (I mean, yeah, I shouldn't have thrown Remedy in with the other two, which are great the whole way through; just listened to the Kaleidescope from "Ghetto Children" to the end & it's impeccable) (equiv to the gameshow voice on Lord Willin' - the start of "Ma, I Don't Love Her" which gradually (& disturbingly) chipmunks the female voice into a whiny blur - this can really disturb me).

another, earlier-in-my-affection/chronology cd that the opening four tracks are amazing (also, the singles) followed by a vaguely inconsequential track - Mezzanine. yet when I started listening to the last half of it a few years ago, I was blown away ("Group Four"!!!!).

my problem = standing still long enough to listen to anything over 40 minutes.

Ess Kay (esskay), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't stand 'Too Long' - good thing its at the end frankly

Jon Helgren, Saturday, 13 December 2003 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 13 December 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon Helgren, Sunday, 14 December 2003 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

yes the corresponding videos were aired at the time of each of the four single releases. there was then a huge gap while the rest of the film was completed. recently the video for 'Something About Us' has been aired on MTV a few times late night but I haven't seen any others played.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

that said, 'One More Time' was released just over three years ago (!) but the video for it didn't surface until February 2001 I think.

Daft Club is midly entertaining but it's really something to download. I dig the Gonzales cover of Too Long (ie. 70s soft-rock stylee) and the Face to Face remixes are fine (although that's probably due to teh quality of the original).

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really not loving the neptunes "harder..." remix

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 January 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither, that's the only one I've heard from Daft Club. I love DP and I love the Neps but I don't feel that remix at all.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That RMX is a banger. You crazy motherfucker. What's not to like. You crazy motherfucker. You hate Paris.

Star Hustler, Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The Neps remix works well on the Bugz in the Attic Fabric mix, but mainly because it's pretending to be a broken beat record! I think it's a bit confusing because you expect a Neptunes remix of anything to be more not less club-friendly.

The Name Daft Punk has power that no one realizes. It's not only funny, but in many ways, magical. Daft Punk - Ha! is an expression that Mocknick and his friends accidentally stumbled onto back in the 80's. They realized the magic of the name Daft Punk, it's comical effects and how catchy the expression was. An entire group of people became "Punkers". As years passed, Molnick took the stress-relieving aspect of Daft Punk - Ha! and developed a system to give it relavance.
