A shame. He fell down the stairs in his home and apparently died instantly.

Bumping this to New Answers.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Boogie on, RP, and thanks for the fun memories.

brianiac (briania), Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, wow. what brianiac said.

God what a shitty way to go. I've had tons of fun memories to Foghat tunage -- including the very first time I ever got drunk back in high school! but I've told that story elsewhere I'm sure. Anyway, RIP Rod. I will go blast "Fool For the City" in your honor.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, 'Foghat Live' is an indelible high-school memory for me. Dang, was that thing loud.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

this is sad. even though i mostly made fun of the foghat. still, rip ... and i am sure that st. peter will give him permission to jam.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Foghat + Blue Oyster Cult + Mountain at DTE Theatre 2 summers ago. They played Slow Ride 3 times, and it was good each time.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Dang, and just the other day I was reading the story about the dude in San Diego who got the alarm bell at his high school changed to play "Slow Ride" and how the band helped him out. RIP.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 March 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(This song means a lot to me right now!)

Goin' to the city, got you on my mind,
Country sure is pretty, I'll leave it all behind,
This is my decision, I'm comin' home to stay this time.

'Cause I'm a fool for the city, I'm a fool for the city,
Fool for the city, I'm a fool for the city.

Breathin' all the clean air, sittin' in the sun,
When I get my train fare, I'll get up and run.
I'm ready for the city, air pollution here I come!

'Cause I'm a fool for the city, I'm a fool for the city,
I'm a fool for the city, I'm a fool for the city.

I'm like a fish out of water, I'm just a man in a hole.
The city lights turn my blues into gold.
I ain't no country boy, I'm just a homesick man.
I'm gonna hit the grit just as fast as I can.

I'm tired of layin' back, hangin' around,
I'm gonna catch that train, then I'll be city bound.

I ain't no country boy, I'm just a homesick man.
I'm gonna hit the grit just as fast as I can.

I'll get off on Main Street, step into the crowd,
Sidewalk under my feet, yeah, traffic's good and loud.
When I see my inner city child, I'll be walkin' on a cloud.

'Cause I'm a fool for the city, I'm a fool for the city,
I'm a fool for the city, I'm a fool for the city...

Rod Price was the lone objector to record company plans for Foghat near the end of their original run. He left when everyone panicked and decided Foghat ought to be doing gimmicky skinny tie pop in order to find new fans. As usual, it didn't work. "Boys to Chat Girls to Bounce," "In the Mood for Something Rude" and "Zig Zag Walk" weren't uniformly awful records but who among Foghat fans has all of them? Many checked out upon seeing Price had checked out.

He came back for "Return of the Boogie Men" which originally had been slated to be a Rick Rubin project. Rubin was a fan but never got his ass together for it, so Foghat made the record without him. Price also played on a subsequent live record, "Road Cases," produced by Ron Nevison. "Road Cases" doesn't replace Foghat's best seller, "Foghat Live," it's too long, for one -- but it is a good showcase for all of the band's best material.

Shortly thereafter Dave Peverett died of complications due to cancer and it was my impression that Price again left for his own work. You would too. Foghat without the voice of Lonesome Dave? Simply impossible. The band recruited ex-Nugent sideman Charlie Huhn and recorded "Family Jewels" under the name. It was a credible hard rock boogie record but not Foghat. Naturally, my old hometown's snobby yuppie summer festival -- the Bethlehem Music Fest -- promptly booked Foghat as its headliner. Foghat without Peverett or Rod Price. Who would want to hear that? Might as well hire the local top garage band to do a Foghat set.

Live and on record, Foghat had the density of a heavy metal band -- the relentless slide of Price had a lot to do with that -- and many times the energy of standard punk rock. Amazing what four blues, r&B and rockabilly purists could do when they set their minds to it.

Something I've never understood: What is a "foghat" anyway?

late adopter, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

what it is is a kick-ass rock and roll band that kicks the motherfucking living shit out of most of the indie garbage you listen to! you probably love My Bloody Valentine or something? garbage. Foghat kicks their ass nine ways to Sunday. Of course if you never actually played an instrument or know how to parse out rhythm sections, count bars, chord changes, any of that BLINDINGLY BASIC STUFF, yeah you might like a new age band like My Bloody Valentine over Foghat.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What is a "foghat" anyway?

There was a pic of the foghat on the first Foghat album cover. You blind? Oot-greet.

Hey Stormy, way to put 'em in their place! Imagine, walking into the death notice of someone fondly remembered and urinating on the floor.

George Smith, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I've been schooled. I should never ask for basic information. But once again, I must reiterate, what is a "foghat"? Where did they get the name? What does it mean? Is it a song reference? Is it a movie reference, such My Bloody Valentine? I don't know. That's why I asked. I thought that fans would be able to help me out but I guess not.

late adopter, Wednesday, 30 March 2005 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

supposedly, the members of foghat (before they were so named) were sitting around playing scrabble. one of the pre-foghatters tried to claim that "foghat" was a word -- the others disagreed. but all was not lost, for this lot of hirsute english boogie-rockers then knew that they had the name of their new band -- FOGHAT.

now you know.

perhaps the best possible ILM tribute to rod price:

Sometime in the Summer of 1996, Foghat played after a minor-league baseball game in Louisville with Mountain and Iron Butterfly (I didn't actually witness this, unfortunately). According to my friends who were present, Foghat started the set by having the lead singer ask the audience, "Do we have your permission to JAM?!?!?" When he received a positive, enthusiastic response, he then yelled "Then jam we must!!!!" and they broke into a 20-minute version of "Slow Ride," which was basically their whole set. My friend Chris took off his shirt and twirled it 'round his head.

Eisbär, thank you.

I was listening to Steve Jones' radio show about a month ago, and he was talking about them, and kept saying Foghat but pronouncing it like Foggut (with the "u" barely pronounced), and hinting that it was a way of calling themselves "Fuck it." Something like the Fugs, I would imagine.
