Do you ever find yourself listening to certain artists out of a sense of duty? Are there any records that are required listening in order for one to hold valid opinions?

I use my one jazz record (A Love Supreme) as a "palate-cleanser". I don't know why.

Alot of female singers I like always tout the virtues of Blue by Joni Mitchell. I felt obligated to go to source to see^H^H^H hear what all the fuss was about.
Naw. Not really. But I do put more faith in the opinions of someone with "omnivorous appetites" who can say something truly witty, evocative or deep about what they like. I've had just about enough of: "Well...it just rocks...y'know....it doesn't suck. See?"
