Spun off from the "Best Music You Never Heard" and the "Finally heard it" threads.

Do you ever find yourself listening to certain artists out of a sense of duty? Are there any records that are required listening in order for one to hold valid opinions?

Are songs meant to be solved? Are they still fun if you think you've figured them out?

fritz, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also, have you tried to use radically different music to that which you're used to in order to cleanse your palate and open yourself up? what was it and was it successful?

sorry for all the questions at once.

Bizarre. I once posted a thread about this very thing on another board, and its title was "Eat your vegetables!"

Yeah...I've puzzled over "All" by the Descendants for over a decade now. Heh.

I use my one jazz record (A Love Supreme) as a "palate-cleanser". I don't know why.

sorry for all the questions at once.
Perfectly okay by me.

Alot of female singers I like always tout the virtues of Blue by Joni Mitchell. I felt obligated to go to source to see^H^H^H hear what all the fuss was about.

Naw. Not really. But I do put more faith in the opinions of someone with "omnivorous appetites" who can say something truly witty, evocative or deep about what they like.
I've had just about enough of:
"Well...it just rocks...y'know....it doesn't suck. See?"

Lord Custos, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't post it on this board, don't worry.

I take vitamins in the hope that they will prevent a stroke. Why turn around and let 3 CDs of "Clicks and Cuts 2" undo all that?

Yes! You must give something a fair listen to, to give a valid opinions. For example, I could say the backstreet boys suck, but I don't even know the name of one song. Hell, I can't even tell the difference between them and n'sync. I don't listen to pop radio, so I really couldn't tell you if they suck or not. It's like when I first heard Meshuggah, it sounded like a big mess, like they didnt know what they were doing. But now there one of my favs.

no and no.

'Enter the 36 Chambers'. I've always been shit at languages and this one is no exception.

sorry, but could you indicate what question you're answering. it's my own fault for toploading the thread with only semi-related enquiries.

fritz, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fritz you big rockist!! answers are of course to questions they fit best according to DESIRES AND QUIRKS of you the reader!!

mark s, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

guilty as charged, i suppose...but "no and no" in answer to 6 or 7 questions offers me no insight to said quirks & desires. perhaps the desired affect. again, my own fault.

I don't feel a higher calling or anything, but I do try to pull out CDs that I feel I've "neglected," especially ones that didn't make such an impression on me at first.

a lot of techno used to be like this for me; now I know what I like, so I don't listen to the bad stuff any more.
