Ok, what album did you buy, based on the hype around it? Never heard a single, never ask somebody's opinion, or read a review. That is, what cd were you planing on buying before it even come out?

For me it was Iced Earth, "Something wicked..." (damn Iced Earth!). I bought it 'cuz the cover looked cool (i'll never do that again).

Bought ROCK ACTION by Mogwai based singularly on the hype around it and the interviews with the band members (who sounded like interesting gents with great taste.) Had never heard a note from it beforehand. After spinning it, I cannot say it lived up to my expectations. In fact, quite frankly, I disliked it so much I sold it to a used cd shop the very next day. Lesson learned? Probably not.

Not wanting to be a pedant or anything but where are you meant to have heard the hype if you've never read a review or asked anyone about them? Do you mean - people have told you about them without asking, and they keep getting mentioned? That sort of thing?

I don't really know, anyway. Doompatrol going on about Poptones made me buy a Montgolfier Brothers CD (which I quite liked!) - does that count?

What is hype besides singles, opinions, and reviews? I bought "The Teaches of Peaches" because someone I'd just met someone named "Killer" and she said it was her favorite record. That was good enough for me!

That bloody awful Campag Velocet album springs to mind. Former NME journalist forms band - duh! After Nasty Rox Inc., Fabulous & Gay Dad, I should have seen that one coming.

Hype made me buy the White Stripes latest album. My gf likes it more than I do.

Fabulous

Ah, the musty, diseased memories this calls to mind.

C'mon, 'Destined To Be Free' was great!

"I don't give two fucks about ya, I just wanna rip it up ya!"

Yes, exactly.

Someone dropped the name Avalanches. I think it was Ian at Bleeding Ears. I wasn't too into sampling music at the time, and that record turned me on my butt. One of the few times i bought a cd from the hype factor.

Pavements Slanted & Enchanted. What a waste.

I bought the Magnetic Fields' Charm of the Highway Strip after reading one article on the band in the Village Voice at the time of its release. Very happy I did. Did you write that article, Douglas Wolk? If so, thanks!

Oh oh oh I bought "At the Drive-In" - totally un-heard - as present for rock band I know who was going on west-coast tour... they were like "his voice is annoying"

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Still haven't heard it because of the hype:
The Strokes
Steve Malkmus
Radiohead

Bought Firehose's "Ragin Full On" because of the well-deserved hype (i.e. Mike Watt out of his depression/funk - followup to the late D.Boon .) ..Glad I didn't succumb to it again on "My Dad Worked on a Boat" or whatever that mini rock-opera was called.
