Which ones should I "really" listen to, and which can I skip, and why. I've never heard of half of these guys:

Global Goon "Vatican Nitez" (Rephlex) Drexciya "Harnessed the Storm" (Tresor) Chessie "Overnight" (Plug Research) Aria "Haze" (Bleep) Otto von Schinach "Escald Frio" (Schematic) Horace Andy Meets Naggo Morris/Wayne Jarrett "Mini Showcase" (EFA) I have heard of Horace Andy before, thanks. Richard Divine "Aleamapper" (Schematic) Bim Sherman "The Need to Love" (EFA) "Border Crossing" Compilation (Immigrant) I smell punk. "Electric Ladyland: Clickhop Version 1.0" (EFA/Mille Plateaux) auben vor "Dynamo" (EFA) Surface of Eceon "The King Beneath the Mountain" (Strange Artifact) Covered on ILM recently, no?

the clickhop comp. is at least 50% brilliant (and probably more), but you -must- at least listen to the mri track on disc one.

Let's straighten up that list...

I've got the first Chessie album (that one there is the third) which I really rather enjoy. One-time indie jangler having taken quite an about-face.

I'm a Surface of Eceon fan, but I would say that. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the two Schematic records are very boring (and the Schirach one is total crap), and this is coming from a guy who listens to a lot of IDM, but Ned's right about Surface of Eceon, that's a nice one.

I'll third Surface of Eceon. Also check out Landing (whose members are in Surface of Eceon) if you haven't already.

i think it's actually dynamo "aussen vor" (with the ss being replaced by that german B-looking whatsit, an eszett?) and it's pretty nice backdated chain reaction type stuff. same guy as various artists, i think. by the way, from this date forward i decree: NO MORE DRY, DULL ELECTRONICA COMPS CALLED (blank)-HOP, PLEASE. bip hop, blip hop, click hop. shut up already.

Global Goon "Vatican Nitez" (Rephlex)

This one is supposed to be excellent, read something in De:Bug along the lines of reminds me of Aphex Twin in one of his mystical moods.

Drexciya "Harnessed the Storm" (Tresor)

A must. Actually envy you having it already. What is there to tell? The kings of electro.

I threw the first 5 on the changer last night, and everybody's comments were right on. Yes, Global Goon is awesome! Not anything like Aphex. I'd compare it to Plaid's "Rest Proof Clockwork", only twice as vivid and detailed. Just gorgeous. I'm playing it again this morning at work. Drexciya has some quite wicked tracks and some that sound like fairly bland dancefloor exercises on first hearing. I will return to it. I hadn't realized that they were associated with Underground Resistance. The Chessie was a surprise. I had heard that first album, Jim, and thought it was nice but not compelling or anything. Maybe if I had listened more. But "Overnight" is a monster leap forward. It's more like space rock than the ambient/IDM of before. Wildly imaginative. Parts reminded me of Third Eye Foundation, Slowdive's "Pygmalion" among others.

I had to cut short Aria and Schinach. Aria for trip hop lameness - updated, laptop style trip hop, but lame nonetheless. And Schinach for his nonstop imitation of Squarepusher's most annoying tracks of overkill.

Tonight it's on to Clickhop, Dynamo (thanks) and Surface of Eceon.

Three great tracks on Clickhop (AGF/DLAY, alva noto, DSP), maybe another six goodies, the rest blah.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Global goon is very good, the first album buy them was as good as the BoC album that came out at around the same time, similar technique to Boards but with a bit more humour.., perfect saturated tape 2 tape music...
