Random Number ~ The Fact That I Did
So Solid Crew ~ They Don't Know
Basement Jaxx ~ Remedy (still haven't heard this!)

gareth, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Troggs-"The E.P. collection"
Van der Graaf Generator-"The least we can do is wave at each other"
A friend made me a CD-R of Nas' "Stillmatic".

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm I know what my last purchase of 2001 was (bought the Kylie album on New Years Eve), but this year....

Oh yeah I remember! With my HMV Gift Vouchers (thanks Aunt Jean!) I bought Abba's Super Trouper remaster (excellent album), Frank Black's Frank Black, that dreadful ARE Weapons single I wrote about, and something else that slips my mind now (cheap and in the sale, actually maybe it was just batteries). Then that same evening I ended up in Borders and bought a comp of Treasure Isle records and another comp called Urban Africa Now! which I've been really enjoying. That's all so far this year.

Droppin' Science - Volumes

The Langley Schools Music Project - Innocence & Despair

African Headcharge - My Life in a Hole in the Ground

that's it I guess, although I got shitloads of music on MP3 that is keeping me away from the shops.

Omar, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Downloaded way too many MP3s. But I still managed to get Feminist Sweepstakes, Insignifance and Rocksteady (promo). All three are purty groovee.

Tim, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I bought shitloads of stuff in the dying days of '01, so only one thing so far this year - Bertrand Burgulat's "Richer E.P" (second hand)

Jeff W, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar - is "Volumes" worth getting?

Jeff W, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeff how can I put this without appearing to be a raving madman? ;) Yes. Absolutely. It is the perfect jungle compilation, there is no duff track on it. You'll fall in love with jungle again and wonder why it had to change. Just beautiful music. Let's face it: if you know who Droppin' Science is/are then this is a must.

Omar, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some one-sided 12" white label called "Moo Burn" by Kelly D.

No label, no catalogue number, nothing.

Stephen Stockwell, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I forgot to mention "Street Jams" and the Prefuse 73 album.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

only cd i've actually paid for so far is von lmo's _future language_ - ridiculous crashing rock that reminds me of 70s 'punk' like destroy all monsters, but monstrous and ridiculous. it inspired me to download his _red resistor_ which is all of the above times ten.

being jobless, mp3s are where it's at. shirley collins, syd floyd bootlegs, turkish 60s music, frank chickens, rebetica...ahh, sweet delight.

Mark, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh, too many things -- and this was literally on New Year's. I remember getting the Ramones first album rerelease but that's about it.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...but Mark, surely you get them all for nowt ;-) Thanks to Pitchfork for the nice David Candy review, btw

Jez, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lots of stuff, but I want to take this opportunity to recommend Prince's latest, "The Rainbow Children". It's damn good. Really.

Sean, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

David Raposa, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeez, you people have been busy. I've bought just the one for myself: The Beach Boys' Sunflower/Surf's Up for seven quid from Warrior in Crystal Palace.

Also found a Ninian Hawick thing for 4 quid on a trawl through Soho (for Pam), the same day I went to the counter on the ground-floor-of- that-shop-where-the-basement-is-Daddy-Kool on Berwick Street with a fistful of CDs, discovered they wouldn't accept a card for 'sale stuff', and walked out sans records (ostensibly to find a cash machine, but once out in the fresh air, realised I didn't really need them anyway... bit of an anti-epiphany, that).

Michael Jones, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Been a few, mostly used, and I can't remember a bunch of them off the top of my head. Here, though:

  • Jane Siberry - City A collection of various works that had previously been spread out on other albums, like soundtracks and the children's album by Barney the Dinosaur, apparently
  • Ohm: Early Gurus of Electronic Music (putting my money where my mouth was from the earlier thread about Electroacoustic, and it's amazing as I knew it would be)
  • both albums by Molasses love the packaging, and the music is pretty darned good too, if a tad depressing at times
  • Love and Rockets - Express (reissue) I was feelin' a hankerin'; the new running order throws me off a bit though..."Angels and Devils" should be at the very beginning, dammit!
  • The Avalanches - Since I Left You Because everyone here was talking it up so much as some sort of masterwork. It's okay, I guess. But it's one of those "corrupted" CDs designed not to work properly in the computer, causing my system to crash repeatedly while I was trying to rip it into my Nomad, so negative points there.
  • Firesign Theatre - Don't Crush that Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers A reissue of the best comedy album of all time, period, and FINALLY!
  • Cabaret Voltaire - Remixed Poop from the later part of the major label years. For review purposes.
That's enough for now.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm so broke. I bought Royksopp Melody AM back in 2001, the 29th or something. That's it.

Also I am jealous of Gareth getting to hear Remedy for the first time. Go straight to YOYO.

Bill E, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damian, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How do you do a line break here? It's pretty simple, right?

Yeah, small tag -- it's < BR > (without the spaces, though -- I put them in so you can see the tag). Just put it after the word you want the line to end on.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like this?
Ned Raggett

I'll e-mail you tomorrow, I'm off to bed!

Arthur, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stevo, what's that Elephant Man record like? I passed it over in favour of the TOK album, which might've been a mistake...

jacob, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jacob- just picked it up but early listens are promising. Not that familiar with the scene but Dancehall is producing sounds unlike anything else I’m hearing at the mo. ‘Comin’4 you’ is a loose collection of singles with those wonderful dislocated riddims . Only don’t buy it on vinyl like I did (second-hand), contains only 12 tracks to the CDs 24. Thanks a f**k Greensleeves.

Gangsta Rap’s morbid influence is very evident, Elephant lisping about being a bad m/fer. ‘2000 Began’ is mashes up dance-hall with techno replete with squelchy acid bleeps. Top tune. On ‘Mamma’ Elephant joins up with Beenie Man to praise their Mums. ‘Ain’t no one can cook like Mamma’ awwww..

stevo, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah Comin' 4 You! is ace - I maintain that "Mama" is a reworking of J Lo's "If You Had My Love" only, like, a thousand times better. I'm anxious to hear the new one Log On.

Tim, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the black-eyed snakes - it's the black-eyed snakes ken boothe - crying over you: anthology 1963 to 1978 [Trojan] melt banana - MxBx 1998/1300 miles at light velocity Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - s/t (Ida) - you are my flower Hikashu - hikashu history explosions in the sky - those who tell the truth shall die basement jaxx - rooty

Simone, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, any interest in seeing Gorky's next month?

See, this is what happens when I'm not paying attention, good bands come through town! What's the story on when, where, etc.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. Manitoba - Start breaking my heart.

2. Alpha - The impossible thrill.

3. The Who - Who's next.

4. Beth Orton - Trailer Park

5. Dexy's Midnight Runners - Don't stand me down.

6. Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty.

Of the above the Who and Dexy's are vinyl replacements. Beastie Boys I've already sold as it's just too bad to describe. I'm not sure that I'll keep Beth Orton or Manitoba (bought after reaading a rave review) either, they're not as engaging as I thought, but I'll perservere.

helenfordsdale, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Having returned from a visit to the parents up in Merseyside with another stack of vinyl barrel-scrapings (second trip in six weeks), I've now decided that I'm not going to buy any new stuff until I've ploughed through all this neglected old stuff. And this means, amongst others, Anna Palm, The Werefrogs, Home Of The Brave and Thin White Rope - so it's bound to be hard going.

At the beginning of last autumn I decided I wouldn't buy any new records until I got a job. This moratorium last three weeks until I capitulated in a second-hand shop in Crystal Palace. Bit unrealistic, really.

Michael Jones, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am 100% dead serious when I say that if you were sitting in front of me right now - and I would still do this if everyone (rightly) called me an asshole, or if you were bigger than me and I would pay dearly immediately afterwards - I would try to punch you as hard as I could right in your throat you dork.
