Or - 5 records you want to buy if you buy on impulse. Like I usually do admittedly but with nothing to do this week I've been daydreaming about what I'm going to get tomorrow.

Tom, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And what I've been daydreaming about is:

Various Artists - Big Rig Classics 1939-1969 (cant remember full title, the trucking one ILE collectively told me to get)

Pink - Get The Party Started CD Single

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor CD Single

Cheap Trick - In Color And In Black And White

Various Artists - Ayia Napa 2001 The Album (as recommended by Tim) OR

So Solid Crew - Fuck It mix CD (as recommended by Marcello)

Tom, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm thinking of buying "Kid A".

I might at some stage buy that Kylie Minogue single. And maybe that album by Destiny's Child.

I saw a Motown compi with Edwin Starr's 'War' on it going cheap, and I might buy that too.

DV, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I need to buy a Prince album. I've only got "Purple rain". Any suggestions? Boredoms "Vision creation newsun". I've been meaning to get that for ages. Nas-"Illmatic". What I've heard of Jim O' Rourke's "Insignificance" sounds fantastic. The Stanton Warriors mix c.d. as well. Oh yeah, I *will* buy a Steve Miller Band album but incredibly I cant find any..

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

More Nurse With Wound, The Necks, Bicycle Thief, Masters of Reality, Elton John,...
Still waiting for my Josie & Pussycats, No Neck Blues Band and Kid606 records to arrive. grrrr

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael: Dirty Mind and SignoftheTimes

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd go with Dirty Mind or 1999 after Purple Rain.

I'm pretty sure my next five purchases will include the new Drexciya, as well as the Felix da Housecat that came out last year in the UK -- it's getting (or just got) a US release. My wife wants the latest Ben Folds, so that'll pbly figure into the next five...

Andy K., Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1) Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Dazzle Ships (finally spotted it, should be a nice replacement of the mp3s on my computer)
2) V/A (Kompakt) - Pop Ambient 2002
3) Mission Of Burma - Vs. (inspired by recent talk)
4) Life Without Buildings - Any Other City (I've decided that if Andy K likes something, I buy it)
5) So Solid Crew - They Don't Know (as soon as it appears)

Tim, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jess, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A couple from : Studio One Roots/Studio One Rockers /100% Dynamite/500% Dynamite/Other Soul Jazz Reggae comps (any recommendations which are the best, people?)

The only recent Soul Jazz comps I've picked up/copied are Studio One Rockers, 500% Dynamite, New Orleans Funk, and Nuyorica Roots. Rockers and the entirety of the Dynamite series seem to be pretty even keel. A big part of why I really like that Dynamite series has to do with the way they throw the old and new and the classic and rare together. It's all one big stew -- none of that "this era was better, it's all gone downhill since 19XX..." or "look at us, aren't we digging up the goods for you?" bullshit.

Andy K., Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As soon as they come out between now and the end of next month:

V/A - In The Beginning There Was Rhythm (seems to be another fine Soul Jazz comp with tracks by The Slits, 23 Skidoo and more)

A.R.E. Weapons - A.R.E. Weapons

Fridge - Happiness (been putting that one off for too long)

Daryll-Ann - Trailer Tales

The Notwist - /Neon Golden/

Lambchop - It's a Woman

Prince records I'd recommend: Around The World In A Day Parade Sign 'O' The Times

Alacran, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

black dice/wolf eyes collaboration
catherine ribeiro - paix
neil campbell/richard youngs collaboration
something by pita, dammit, cos i'm jonesin
the new wu tang, i guess (almost sounds like them, again, sorta)

your null fame, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'I Am Happy And I'm Singing And A 1,2,3,4' - Jim O'Rourke

CD reissue of the Marzette Watts ESP alb w/ Sonny Sharrock

No-Neck Blues Band alb on Revenant

Parson Sound alb (if I can find it anywhere~)

"Where's Your Head At?' CD Single by Basement Jaxx ('cos it's the only thing I've ever liked by them)

Andrew L, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, forgot the Wu-Tang album.

Tim, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

scarlet's well record(i forget the title), neil halstead 'sleeping on roads', ant ' a long way to blow a kiss', david kilgour's album and a chair with an ottoman.

keith, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Honda - that Dymaxion album has been out in the states for a while now. ('Twas released on the band's label, based in New Yawk City.) I fetched my copy from Insound.com; I'm sure other like-minded retail outlets will have it available, too.

And kudos to those of you jonesin' for the Fridge & NNCK albums - they are quite good (and, actually, come to think of it, not too dissimilar - they walk different paths, but end up in the same place, which is nice).

My Forecasted Five (as envisioned on my Amazon.Co.UK wishlist & my overburdened Insound shopping cart): Swell Maps - A Trip to Marineville / Life Without Buildings - that record everyone's gone goofy over / Fridge - Sevens & Twelves / Ida - Shhhhhhhh... / Rothko - Forty Years to Find a Voice. The Joel RL Phelps LP on 12XU (w/ BONUS TRACKS!) and maybe even Ed Harcourt (must research) are approaching the Top 5. (Come to think of it, I should check out that So Solid Crew stuff, too.) (Among many, many other things.)

David Raposa, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr. C, of the per cent series I'd go for 400% first. Just seems to me to be the strongest of the series and has the classic Toots and The Maytels track "54-56 Who's My Number". 200% is good also but 100% is a bit short and patchy. Haven't heard the newest one. New Orleans Funk is excellent. The Philadelphia Roots one is good but as AllMusic says, it's mainly groove-orientated and suitable for DJs. Contains this amazing female vocal on "Great Big Liar", a Gimme Shelter type wail. The Studio One Roots compilation is supposed to be excellent and I must pick this up.

David Gunnip, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's see -- the Mirza rerelease on Ba Da Bing!, the first two releases on Strange Attractors Audio House, and probably a couple more things on Kranky. These are my planned purchases, mind. My real ones will happen on impulse.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Improvised Music from Japan, 10-CD box, $150, 80-page book. I'm hoarding the penny jars around the house for this one.

dleone, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited," one of the early Who albums or ideally a two-on-one combination of a couple of 'em, that most recent Clem Snide album, any/all Immortal that precedes their new and brilliant "Sons of Northern Darkness," and something by the Mekons as soon as somebody here tells me where to go after "Fear and Whiskey," whose reissue has been stuck in my changer for two weeks now. I had & loathed "Pussy, King of the Pirates" but "F & W" -- Jesus, this is brilliant stuff.

John Darnielle, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tina and The Total Babes - She's so Tuff
The Tearjerkers - Bad Mood Risin'
The Von Bondies - i forget what it's called
The Lost Sounds - Memphis is Dead and Black Wave
Holly Go Lightly - singles collection
Feast of Snakes - singles

fritz, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've gotta get me that Fog single (Pneumonia?) - heard it a couple of times on Xfm, sounds a *bit* like Beck.

Jeff Biscuits, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1) Imaginary Landscapes - Asao Kikuchi
2)Isn't Anything - My Bloody Valentine
3)Figurine - whatever their bluddy album is called, I dunno
4)OMD - ENOLA GAY
5)Felix Da Housecat - whatever THAT album is called. Actually a single would be okay. Felix Da Housecat is actually quite good!

Now I wish someone would tell me if I could listen to streaming radio here *looks at back of pooter to see if headphones can go in* I BET it is banned the pooheads.

Sarah, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

After posting a lament last night I found Hex! Woo hoo. ILM = rabbit's foot. Anyway, the Soul Jazz In the Beginning… compilation and the Lambchop albums when they are released. The new Wu-Tang, when I find it at a reasonable price; that No-Neck Blues Band, although I fear disappointment; KLF's Chill Out and This Heat's Deceit, when I next see them. (Thanks to Andy K. for that last one!)

Hmm, I guess that's six.

scott p., Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

John - give 'Rock And Roll' by The Mekons a go.

Andrew L, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ONE thing I haf found is that I can listen to stuff on RealPlayer. I just listened to 'I love Everything' and now I am listening to 'I Love Music'. Was this by Nitsuh??? THIS IS CRAZY!! RIght lets try the RADIO. Oh my. Nitsuh come for a pint.

Sarah, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to buy five copies of Van Morrison "Moondance" and shoot skeet with them.

Gage-o, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Einstein on the Beach box set, Philip Glass
Dagmar Krause Supply and Demand (for the Hollywood Elegies)
The Moldy Peaches album
The Palais Schaumburg album
Jim O'Rourke's Mego album I'm Happy And I'm Singing and A 1234

Momus, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Daryll-Ann - Trailer Tales
Arien, stop promoting dutch bands. ;-)

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Off the top of my head, five I think I'd like:

O'Rourke's Mego thing

Emmylou Harris' last LP (apparently bought for me, Xmas 2000, by my brother and still somewhere in his house)

Pulp album

Position Normal mail-order thing

a cheap (but good) Thelonious Monk compilation

Prediction: these will not be anything like the next five records I buy.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If they ever show up at my friendly neighborhood retailer...

No Neck BB LU-s/t Heavy Blinkers-2nd album Bogdan R.-My Love I Love Gnac-any

Curt, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom let me know what the b-side of the Pink single is like. Apparently it samples eurythmics and has some guest rapper. I forget who. It sounded interesting though.

Michael that Emmylou Harris cd is great, if it's "Red Dirt Girl", although I always feel ashamed listening to it because it's like something my mum might like.

Anyway the next 5 cds I will buy will be.

Green Velvets album, I don't know what it's called.

Chemical Brothers-Come With Us.

Something by Deep Dish as per the thread on here.

Agent Sumo-24 Hours.

That's all I can think of.

Ronan, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Helen/Andy K: I got Prince "Dirty mind" for 2 euros today. Dirty mind, indeed!

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The next 5 albums I plan to purchase (what with my funds suddenly being limited):

Boards Of Canada - _Geodaddi_
New Order - _Get Ready_ (need to replace the mp3s since I really like it)
Chemical Brothers - _Come With Us_
Brahms - "Schicksalslied"
Brahms - "Requiem"

If I can find both Brahms pieces on the same CD, I'll probably end up getting Janet Jackson's _The Velvet Rope_.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, get some velvet underground. ;-)

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Facing You by Keith Jarrett for my parents. The Yeah Yeah Noh compilation. Something by Mission of Burma, which is risky for me cos I listened to sound samples and they sound too much like a band for angry young men. La Folie by the Stranglers to replace a stolen copy. The Kleenex/Lilliput reissue, which I keep putting off.

PS Dazzle Ships and Organization are on sale for $9.99 US at CDNOW.

youn, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michel Polnareff-Polnareffs; Love, Peace & Poetry, Vol. 2: Latin American Psychedelia; Miss Kittin and the Hacker-First Album; The Deadly Snakes-Love Undone (is that the one to get, Fritz?); Reperata & the Delrons-Whenever a Teenager Cries.

Arthur, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm....

Slayer - South of Heaven
The new Masters of the Hemisphere album, whenever it comes out
Iron Maiden - Best of the Beast
A motown/ Phil Spector comp
The last My Favorite album, which I don't know the title of and will probably not find in a shop.

REALITY: Anything that takes my fancy.

jel, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Possible:

Black Sabbath Vol. 4
Abba Gold
Orb Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld
Possibly something by Can
Definitely replace my misplaced Cocteau Twins comp.

Lord Custos, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Arthur - re: The Deadly Snakes. Love Undone is more trashy & lo-fi & punk rock, I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore has better production and playing, I think, but less manic maybe. depends what you like. I'd start with Not Your Soldier, cause if you don't like that you definitely won't like the other.

fritz, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

new rye coalition 7" new trail of dead whenever it comes out mouse on mars 10" + 7" live new surface of eceon DJ Pica Pica Pica where ever i can find it

The Sound - Various re-issue CDs
and a couple Sundazed Otis Redding reissues on vinyl

g, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boards of Canada - Music has the right to children (before their new one comes out Amon Duul Ii - Yeti ZGA - Sub Luna Morrior Oval - Systemisch Muslimgauze - The Inspirational Sounds of

Jay, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Honda, I think the Kompakt comp has been released here. At least, I paid domestic for it and it showed no signs of being imported.

Josh, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The next album I'll probably buy: Sparklehorse's Its A Wonderful Life. I've been listening to a handful of mp3's off it and have been pleasantly surprised with how complete the songs actually sound, which was my big gripe from the earlier stuff.

bnw, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I highly recommend Dazzle Ships, and Architecture & Morality.

It all depends on what i find, but my five (I know are in some stores nearby): 1 Ryuchi Sakamoto: Beauty 2 Residents: Wormwood 3 Big Star: 3rd 4 Elliott Smith: Either/Or 5 Pizzicato 5: 5th, or Playboy/Playgirl

A Nairn, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn.. I have to get back to those nice Berkeley music shops. I can't find anything here in Los Altos.

Honda, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Something dancehall. So solid (out in feb!). Ludacris. bark psychosis. something smoov & r&b, prolly this album named Chicago 1987 or something if I can remember the right name (any help?)

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan:Tom let me know what the b-side of the Pink single is like. Apparently it samples eurythmics and has some guest rapper. I forget who. It sounded interesting though.

Please allow me to cut in Tom. It's fantastic! Slowed down tempo to the original version & gnarly synth doing the 'Sweet Dreams' riff & Redman all over it. A real remix then!

Bill E, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I played safe and got the Zombies box. Sorry Faust, another time.

Dr. C, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me second Bill E.'s take. It is goodness. Wish there was much less Pink, though.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Awaiting Mark Hollis's (Talk Talk) solo album to arrive. A mate's going to burn the Orchestre Baobab and the Don Lett's CD's. He's also offered to copy the Jill Scott CD but I can't imagine it being much cop. Any opinions gratefully received.
Apart from that prob. Fennesz -Endless Summer as it's been raved about so much on ILM.

Louis Armstrong - Hot 5's and 7's box set.

Chemical bros- come with us.

and the Ian Van Dahl album whenever that's released.

As for Prince easy 80's good, 90's bad (odd single excepted Cream/Most beautiful girl..)

Billy Dods, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For some extended gushing on the Pink remix scroll down a couple of posts on my blog.

Tim, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

buying records is saddo. u should have mp3s u dinosaurs.

XStatic Peace, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

prolly this album named Chicago 1987 or something if I can remember the right name (any help?)

Would that be Chicago XXI?

These are five records I'd like to buy:

The Best of Morrissey (that Rhino comp.)
Piano Magic - Low Birth Weight (is this import-only?)
Bach - Goldberg Variations
Markus Guenter - In Moll
Gil Evans Plays Jimi Hendrix

Mark, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Piano Magic - Low Birth Weight (is this import-only?)

you must buy this!

gareth, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You think I'd like it? I see Insound has it for about $17, which isn't bad (still a lot more than I like to pay.) I will buy it soon, though. I have that feeling.

Mark, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth's been taking his Accuracy Pills today. You need Low Birth Weight, Mark.

Tim, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim and Gareth are correct. Low Birth Weight is essential.

RickyT, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Insound is about to be $17 richer.

Mark, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bach - Goldberg Variations
That is the must buy on your list Mark. Take Glenn Gould's first interpretation from the early 50s. That is like a normal LP interpretation played on 45 rpm. Phantastic.

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sci fi - ornette coleman
britney spears-the latest
John Cage-5
Peaches-Teh Teaches of Peaches
maybe some saint saens

anthony, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Saint-Saens' Organ Symphony is right awesome. If you haven't gotten it, that would be the one.

Mickey Black Eyes, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Social Interiors - Traces of Mercury Pinback - S/T Arovane - Tides AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap Gong - Live at Bataclan 1973

Something like that, anyway. Maybe I'll pick up a Fela Kuti album too.

Phil, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mississippi John Hurt - Avalon Blues: Complete 1928 Okeh Recordings, Charles Mingus - Blues and Roots, Joseph Spence - The Complete Folkways Recordings (1958), The Carter Family - Wildwood Flower, Ornette Coleman - Change of the Century

Nate-o, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
