unmissable. add vitalic and i might go

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

well, vitalic's doing primavera sound in barcelona a month or so before, and he's doing the rounds promoting ok cowboy, so maybe he he'll be a late addition...-or- he'll be snatched up by one of the big bcn clubs (razzmatazz, nitsa) for their sonar-competing nights

manuel (manuel), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

oh my fucking god this is so exciting. i'm finally going this year!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

isn't it? i think the lineup's much more solid than last year's

manuel (manuel), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

plus there's bound to be more goodness (coughkompaktcough) at all the surrounding parties. BOOK IT.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

man, I wasn't going to go this year.... but this looks damn good. much more exciting than last year.

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

hmmm... if were coming from the states and trying to be frugal, how much would i expect to have to spend? for 2? any experienced in this? i have somewhat serious plans with the girlfriend at that time, but i don't think she would object to a surprise trip to spain if it can be pulled within reason... i just discovered i have a serious airfare hookup.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

playing it a slightly safer than last year surely?

this is about the only board on the web I've seen positive reactions so far.

all that said... still plenty enough goodness to go round.

lurlerlekrer, Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

the areal, mnus and get physical showcasesswing it for me. i was gonna go anwyay.
anyone up for Fergie for the what the fuckin fuck factor?!?!!?!?!

the people who organise this are the weirdest people ever.

i wish they would cancel the chemical bros and use their performance fees to book a zillion much better people. shitloads of people go to sonar anyway, they dont need to book lame-o stdium tours to bump up the numbers, shurely?

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

well, it's at least 200 euros for the 3-day passes

you can either rent an apartment for those 3 days or check into a hostel...i hooked up with a couple who rented out a room in their flat for the sonar weekend, and i think i paid like 70 euros for the 3 nights, got to use their kitchen so i saved a bundle by cooking there and had a key to myself (no curfews, which some hostels do have) so check whatever barcelona classifieds you can find, apparently lots of people do this sort of thing because sonar -is- a big tourist draw for the city...do this as soon as possible, rates for all accomodation go up statospherically because of this as june approaches

don't bother buying 3 euro beer cups while at sonar at day...go into any convenience store and drink up in the MACBA sidewalks or sneak in the stuff, security isn't that tight...but it is at sonar by night, no contraband there

sonar at night is held at a hangar-like venue not too close to the heart of the city, so you either have to get a cab (perfectly shareable with other people going there too) or pay 3 euros a trip for the sónar bus

drugs are cheap, if you're into that...don't buy from the crusty punks outside sonar by night though, overpriced and dodgy

get 5-10 trip metro passes, they're like 6 euros (i think), and you can go to the beach in the morn and then drop by sonar by day when you feel like it

will post more info when i remember it!

manuel (manuel), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

oh, and EVERY club in barcelona has incredibly stellar lineups for the whole week, not just the sonar weekend...razzmatazz had miss kittin + vitalic, nitsa had kompakt vs. bpitch control and output nights -during- sonar, moog has its dj hell party post-sonar...so if you wanna go all out, save up some more cuz it's at least 15 euros to get in

manuel (manuel), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

as for cost, the tickets are 105 euros for the whole shebang, not 200!

"General Pass
(3 Days + 2 Nights Ticket)
105€
CCCB-MACBA-Centre d'art Santa Mònica-Fira Gran Via (M2)
The easiest way of attending Sónar. Permits entrance to Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night, the three days and the two nights (Friday, Saturday) of the festival"

and accomodation., well people sometimes charge more for sonar time for flats etc. there is a camping site outside of barcleona that was 9 euros a night last time i checked, its a 30 min bus ride into town, but would be nearer than that for sonar by night. you pay a supplement for a car. its in castelldefells, or thereabouts.

i think we paid about 25 pound a night. or maybe thatr was euros. thats was for an apartment for 5 people or so. sorrry i cant be more precise. s for costs within barcelona, its not as cheap a town as you might expect.

that is totally useless, sorry.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

200 euros for 2 people :)

manuel (manuel), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm not going to look at this thread until I'm sure I can actually go, otherwise it will send me into paroxysms of jealousy and bitterness.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

argh i have to leave on the sunday!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Dear god. Sonar warmup at Fabric next month:

A Taste Of Sonar 2005: Francois K (LIVE), Miss Kittin (DJ Set), Durutti Column (LIVE), MU (LIVE), The Beautiful People (LIVE), Chris Coco (DJ Set), Jamie Lidell (LIVE), Hot Chip (LIVE), Mark One & Virus Syndicate (LIVE), Solo Los Solo (LIVE), Simon Russell plays Rough Trade (DJ Set), Mental Overdrive (LIVE), Undo & Vicknoise (Four Decks), Circus Company presents: Sety DJ & Noze (LIVE), Russell Haswell (DJ Set).

It's a bloody Thursday night though (26th May). A snip at a tenner, even is just for Russell Haswell over the Fabric soundsystem.

I'm attempting to get a few people over to Sonar, they were set on Benicassim, but I'm working on them...

MattR (MattR), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if they had to take soulwax because of 2many djs, like a take-the-good-with-the-bad package deal. just kidding, that line-up looks AWESOME.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

manuel (manuel), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

new additions to the bill

from the Sónar newsletter

manuel (manuel), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

hmmm diplo. that sounds good. forget the rest (or should i?)

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

i'm curious about tim goldsworthy's DFA set

manuel (manuel), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

i'm flying into bilbao on the 12th and should be meeting friends in barcelona by the 14th. email me if you're coming down! mark dot pytl1k at rogers.com. sonar man roll call!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

just for the areal and get physical showcases, i think i'm gonna go. the rest of it, i just fancy getting smashed in the sun. ambrose i would totally check fergie out, just for a laugh. this hip hop is bollocks as usual, though, and as per, absolutely no reggae, which i s a big shame because i can't imagine anything better than that on a hot summer day.

stelfox, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

americuns, but your tickets now because prices are sky high. i shelled out over a grand last night. (tip: iberia seems to be the cheapest - way better than any of the domestic airlines.)

dave, my guess is that reggae has never resonated w/ hipster communities in spain the way it does in the US or UK. i could be wrong. also, last year was sonar's big hip-hop extravaganza, which reflected barcelona's (and maybe spain's) infatuation with it at the time. from what i've heard, though, it's not as big there as it was last year. i could of course be way off on all these cod-sociological assessments.

(and they did have francois k spin a dub set once!)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

if you are taking records DO NOT CHECK THEM ON AN IBERIA FLIGHT. i really cannot stress this enough.

stelfox, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

my flights are booked, I don't fly in until late-afternoon thursday.

accommodation worries start here. is it possible to do this by tent?!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 9 May 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

(aka hook a brother up.)

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 9 May 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

theres a campsite out at castelldefells, estrella de mar i was there a few years ago and it was pretty cheap. it looks a long way away, but theres buses that run along the autovia de castelldefells to barcelona, placa espana. only takes about 30 mins. as for gettign back, there are buses at night, its a bit weird. i ended up on one that took us somewhere totally random. sonar by night is out towards that way though, so a taxi might not be awful.

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 9 May 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Would you go again?

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

ok cozen, i'll photoshop a mexican wrestlers facemask over yr head

adam: my body HATES me right now, but yes, in a heartbeat!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

I realise I am a big whiny bed-wetting spoilsport.

XP

I feel fine.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

ive been drunk for three days

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

that poor Shynola t-shirt

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

oh and cut chemist was AMAZING! cozen knew every ninja tune track!!

(xp haha im wearing it right now. uncannesy)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

it was lovely meeting cozen and mark p, by the way.

did you have a better night on saturday, mark?

a few more things dribbling into memory:

-dancing in the amazing sunbeam-lit basilica which is SonarLab to the unexpectedly astounding Iñaqui Marín, by myself right in front of the big fuck-off fan at the back
-Marianna and I striding past SonarPark while DJ Yoda was playing on our way to somewhere else, hearing the opening bars of 'Lose Control', looking at each other and as one diving into the room to dance
-Paris Hilton sex tape used as visuals for Mu
-'Requiem For A Hit' is such an anthem
-2ManyDJs dropping 'Poney Pt 1' at 7am just when I noticed that the sun had risen and all these flagging dancers having their batteries totally recharged by its opening bars

hmm:

-MIA was a little disappointing. she was very good, but she wasn't GREAT especially compared to Róisín Murphy. her homegirl kind of had better moves and more presence. but it was still fun to dance to.
-OK I love 'NY Excuse' and 'E Talking' as much as the next hipster but enough already, they're becoming dancefloor clichés

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

oh and 'Jesus Walks'. Kanye I love you, still.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

alex im bummed i was in such a crap mood the only night we met! sorry about that, bad drugs are bad drugs are bad drugs

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I think tiefschwarz played razzmatazz on the thursday, btw.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

what are you implying?

xp

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

it's OK! I hope I didn't make it worse by being so high. but there'll have to be a next time.

xposts

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

yeah, nathan fake was fucking great, and made all the better by his starting the second i walked through the door after all the confusion outside. (in contrast, the 5 minutes or so i caught of adult. afterwards were v poor.)

a, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

i'd need some seriously high quality drugs to deal with sonar by night. (and that'd still be a waste.) different strokes etc. the best soundsystem i heard all week was at liquid on sunday night... but that could have just been my good mood. anyone else who was there - was Mini Me in attendance or was i hallucinating??

a, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

actually, seriously high quality drugs made sonar by night, this year, the first time i truly enjoyed sonar by night, in fact more than sonar by day, and two nights in a row. who knew chemicals made crowds so manageable? (actually, no - the first half of the first night the crowd was absolutely nightmarish, nothing short of being comatose would have made that bearable.)

for professional reasons, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

he queue to get into plat du jour was insane and put me off going to anything else at sonar by day. im gutted i missed out on the basilica stuff though, i didnt nkow that was a venue - never had it when i last went. i should have gone to the circus company thing there.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 23 June 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

i got a few pictures online on krass.com now: http://krass.com/wiki/Category:Sonar_2005_Photos

c/n (Cozen), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

wow what on earth is going on there??!?!

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 24 June 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

that guy was upstairs in the pop bar at razzmatazz, having his picture taking with people from the crowd. he was sitting on a little couch, set back from the dancefloor, looking really comfortable and suave. his name is "el dioni", apparently in 1989 he stole 300 million pesetas from the armoured van he was driving for work. he went to jail for it but ended up a popular hero.

c/n (Cozen), Saturday, 25 June 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

oh right....sonar seemed to have a sort of con-artist theme going on this year, i recognised his face from the flyers and publicity material

ambrose (ambrose), Saturday, 25 June 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

hahah wtf?!! if only mutek was that insane

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 25 June 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

wait, at least one of the people used in the promos was actually there? classic!

mike h. (mike h.), Sunday, 26 June 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

last year, the hotpants-wearing girl from that edition's promos popped out of nowhere during jeff mill's set, posed and took pictures of the crowd and jeff from the stage

manuel (manuel), Sunday, 26 June 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

some wicked sets here, from ada, basteroid etc

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 26 June 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

how in the world does that download site work, i've tried everything the guy says to do on the forum, and yet, nothing comes up :o(

Jena (JenaP), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

It works for me...be VERY patient (I can only seem to d/l one set an hour but that's enough for me!!!)

Ambrose you are great.

a real live British pub hooligan (nordicskilla), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

I wish it worked with regular download resume programs.

If my connection dies now I can only hope it's still there in the morning. Firefox 'resume' needs either fixing or, removing as a feature. It doesn't work, ever! I can't be bothered to install Opera (resume works) or some such workaround right now. Bet it stalls at 99%. Gah, why do people ZIP mp3 files?? It doesn't compress them any more does it? Am I misinformed about that?

(thats a lot of whines for a single post).

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 26 June 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Heh. I understand why they're zipped now having seen the warez style infos & txt files that come with these :)

fandango (fandango), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

p.s. Ambrose thanks again.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

i paid for the premium thing, it was only 10 euros, and rapidshare seems pretty great generally. its a pity the sets are quite short, misses "luckycharms" on the ada set, but the alex under set sounds wicked, gutted that i missed him. theres some more on slsk floating about that arent on therwe, like a james holden and miss kitten set.

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

I have the James Holden set.

I'm bad and dirty and going to hell (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 June 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

the needle drops.

c/n (Cozen), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

ah yes

I'm bad and dirty and going to hell (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

I'm printing it out to read on my commute home!

I'm bad and dirty and going to hell (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

i liked it c/n, made me excited for everyone that was there, in a wierd "this is all the great shit i missed" kinda way.

next year....

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

fantastic.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

I liked cozen's writeup.

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

what is the track 21minutes into ada's set?!

I'm blown away

c/n (Cozen), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

ambrose is right as well, seems alex under killed

c/n (Cozen), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

also, 12 mins 33secs into basteroid's set

!!!

sorry to be a pest folx

if any of you have the sets downloaded and know the tunes &c.

c/n (Cozen), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I will check, all in good time

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

ronan comes up trumps, track from the ada set is "secret of mana OST (you must leave the forest forever rmx.)" aka the live version of ada's "believer"
