Does anyone have any contacts at Matador?

Because I'm applying for an internship there next fall for school credit, and I bet it's pretty competitive. Most of the students go to V2 Records, but my ideal internship isn't sitting around all day burning Moby CDs and eating vegan crab cakes or whatever they do over there (well, vegan crab cakes wouldn't be that bad haha). The contact doesn't have to be a power player or anything, just someone I could e-mail and introduce myself to and what-not. The guy in charge of internships is Alex Moreno. Thanks!

(ILM, all your life's needs-- at your fingertips...)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

I hear ya, man, it's all about walking around all day delivering Interpol CDs and eating vegan crab cakes or whatever they do over there.

[I actually have no idea what interns do at Matador, but why Matador specifically? I'm asking earnestly]

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

You should get a myspace account and then try to make friends with a guy named Gerard Cosley. He may be gruff at first, but if you are persistent it should pay off.

Hm. I guess because they're in New York and I like Pavement. And Mogwai. And Yo la Tengo. And Belle & Sebastian. And Dizzee Rascal. And Interpol.

They just have a solid roster and seem like a decent people, and they're a major label without being a major label. Right?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

Gerard Cosley? Is he the (ex-)president or something?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Um...you ARE kidding now, right?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

you are thinking of gerald ford.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Or Geraldine Ferraro.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

Ex-president of Matador, I mean...

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Did Hstencil get hired by that CORNY INDIE label? WHERE IS HE?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Try this:

Alex Moreno, Matador Records, 625 Broadway, New York, NY 10012

Oh, boy.

Long & Wonky, Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Haha no go with the Gerard route! Really it'll be more rewarding that way!

ILM is becoming too rude for me. i'm leaving.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Why hasn't Geraldine Ferraro appeared on the Simpsons anyway?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Argh. You jokey indie fuxxors! Which of these are actual people??

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Geraldine Ferraro is an actual person, believe it or not.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

I know who Geraldine Ferraro is. Wasn't that, like, the biggest loss in the history of the party?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

You should try to trade your stock options for teeth, Stence.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

no options or health plans for part-timers, we just get checks.

to the guy who started this thread, look at their web site ya big dummy.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, poortheatre you should look at their website, but we'll definitely put in a good word for you, kay.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

also, after your internship ends, DON'T ask to be friends with Gerard on myspace.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

walk your resume over to their office, lazy!

oh wait, no, don't do that. pls don't do that.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)Yeah, do like I said and ask him BEFORE. He'll respect your verve.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

when my internship ended, myspace didn't exist.

Poundstretcher (nordicskilla), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

to the guy who started this thread, look at their web site ya big dummy.

Look, I know to look at their website. I already spoke to Alex Moreno on the phone and have my resume and cover letter all cooked up. I was just wondering if anyone knew anyone that worked at Matador (not the actual guy that would hire me) that I could introduce myself to via e-mail to improve my chances of getting the position. It's like a reference. I could say, "Oh, could you put the good word in for me with Mr. Moreno?" That kind of operation.

Where are all the illuminati around here? I thought the entire music industry was controlled by 12 ILMers sitting around in A.L.F. pajamas smoking bongs... oh well.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

fuck nobody should put in a good word for ya if they haven't met you. like what am i gonna say? "this dude (i think he's a dude) on the internet is cool?"

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

paypal me $50 and i'll give you a name.

Oh. I thought I'd just share my kiddie porn and warez with them and maybe eventually meet them behind them alone behind the 7-11 at midnight... Damn. Plan B.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

why would someone who doesn't know you give you a reference? this really IS like the myspace thing all over again.

(xposts)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 31 March 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

"oh, that guy, um, 'poortheatre'? yeah, total dude, great speller."

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 31 March 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

What are A.L.F. pajamas? Like Alf? Or does it stand for something else? If it's Alf, where can I get some of those pajamas?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 31 March 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

"fuck nobody should put in a good word for ya if they haven't met you. like what am i gonna say? "this dude (i think he's a dude) on the internet is cool?""

anna. i need this.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

I called thirty or forty small labels back when I was just outta college and asked for an internship. I got one. (It wasn't at Matador though.) You maybe want to be more proactive rather than hoping you'll know someone who knows someone.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

stence i will settle for a front office position with the jays.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

and isn't kris benson a rightwing nut? doesn't that take even a bit of the shine off, james?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

If one of you guys got on here and said, "Does anyone have any contacts at NYU? I'm applying for a creative writing teaching position there." I'd say, "Oh yea. Here's one of my professor's e-mails. She's really hot. I'll tell her I gave someone her e-mail address."

Really? She's hot? Sweet, can you give me her number then?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

Dude, seriously, the best thing to do is probably to individually address letters to a few different people at the label. It will show some initiative beyond just going through the motions of the internship application process. Also, write a good cover letter -- these do matter.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

And emphasize what it is that you want to learn there, not just how awesome you are or how much you know about music, or how much you love certain bands, or how you think it will get you a gig.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

Good advice from Hurting.

-the-night-watch- (-the-night-watch-), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

I seem to recall some very attractive Swiss guys with model-worthy cheekbones who were interns at Matador. Maybe you could say you were Swiss? You never know . . .

werD LeinaD (Drew Daniel), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

LOL! Do it!

-the-night-watch- (-the-night-watch-), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

The Swiss are truly the innovators of the music industry.
And cake rolls.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

I seem to recall some very attractive Swiss guys with model-worthy cheekbones who were interns at Matador. Maybe you could say you were Swiss? You never know...

clearly i worked there in the pre-matmos era. : (

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 April 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

dude, seriously, don't be so bitter. maybe a matador employee will read this thread!

haha, i actually thought about that earlier.

You seem to lack the attention-to-detail that is required of a successful Matador intern.

Crap. Maybe it's walter...!

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 1 April 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

You maybe want to be more proactive rather than hoping you'll know someone who knows someone.

I'm not a fucking moron. This thread isn't the only effort I've taken. I just thought that someone on ILM might, I dunno, HELP me.

And emphasize what it is that you want to learn there, not just how awesome you are or how much you know about music, or how much you love certain bands, or how you think it will get you a gig.

That's a really good call. I'll re-vamp my cover letter.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 1 April 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

81 posts? Damn. This is the most successful thread I've ever started. (We'll just ignore that is was due to everyone's rush to ridicule me.)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 1 April 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

You have to become friends with Chris Lombardi's wife. That's the only way.
Seriously. I'm not joking.

It isn't a great position, anyway. You'll spend most of your time checking tickets at Intepol shows and whatnot. Anything you learn would pretty much be incidental.

Seuss, Friday, 1 April 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh come on, don't pick on him. He's just trying to get hired! Okay, it's a bit silly to attempt this via ILM but come on...

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Friday, 1 April 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

I think that maybe, just MAYBE some people who work at Matador occasionally cast a sideways glance at ILM, in which case, who knows, perhaps your ploy has already influenced your chances one way or another?

werD leinaD (Drew Daniel), Friday, 1 April 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

one way or another

Indeed.

matadorinternhirer, Friday, 1 April 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

Most of the students go to V2 Records, but my ideal internship isn't sitting around all day burning Moby CDs and eating vegan crab cakes or whatever they do over there

According to this thread on Matador's message board, you can look forward to "a huge education in how to pack packages and affix postage meter strips."

Vic Funk, Friday, 1 April 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Apparently the new thing in internships is telling your applicants to go fuck themselves for wanting to do their work for free, and promising them that they won't get anything else out of it.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 1 April 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

internships = busy work, gofer, learn to be a suckup. contacts are what you have AFTER an intership, along w/ stretchmarks, rope burns, broken spirit, dead soul, and a newfound respect for your elders.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Friday, 1 April 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

You fuckers are harsh... Poortheatre isn't looking for a reference, he's just looking for someone to tell the hiring guy "A guy I don't really know is looking for a job. Can you look at his resume? I don't know anything about him except that he's looking for a job." If the resume sucks or poortheatre is a clown, then you don't look bad. But he's just trying to get noticed.

Hasn't anyone ever looked for a job before? Just getting your name mentioned can make a big difference.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 1 April 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

looking for a job and applying for an internship are 2 diff things. IMHO.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Friday, 1 April 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh, then fuck him, I guess.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 1 April 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

no, fuck internships (was my point). you don't get paid, and you get taken advantage of six ways to sunday by pompous fools all in the name of "contacts" networking etc. I may be bitter about the media/rec co monolith but I wasn't dissing poortheatre, just trying to set him straight on the shining path to enlightenment.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Friday, 1 April 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

If the resume sucks or poortheatre is a clown, then you don't look bad

wrong.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 April 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I work for an indie label. You wanna be my intern?

Here's my main question: do you like filing? Because that's what you're going to be doing. Filing and keeping an eye on ILM so I don't miss any good threads.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Incidentally, just so everyone knows, this thread is officially the moment where ILM became indistinguishable from the Velvet Rope.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 1 April 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

what indie label do you work for eppy?

breezy, Friday, 1 April 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

poortheatre, is that yr correct email address? i'll send you some matador contacts.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 1 April 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

not to say that i'm anywhere special exactly, but i certainly wouldn't be half as far without asking ppl i don't know for help every once in a while.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 1 April 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I left mine on the sink in Gerard's office bathroom once. He made fun of me for forgetting something as crucial as my sight and then wouldn't give them back to me for like two days, the dick.

judah, Friday, 1 April 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

"office bathroom" or demo pile?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I got offered a position at a somewhat corny indie label that would have paid thanks to my web/computer stuff skills. Fuck you liberal arts majors!

absolutego (ex machina), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

can i be someone's intern too?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

i need an intern to get me a bagel from the place around the corner on mornings when i work the night shift and am too zonked to shower. pay is old copies of the times, back issues of the new yorker, and an earful about rocco baldelli's recovery timetable. WHO'S WITH ME?!?!??

maura (maura), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

It's amazing to me that someone named Rocco Baldelli is a center fielder and not a porn star

Spicy Club Sauce (Spicy Club Sauce), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

wait maura where's the bagel place? i can't find a bagel place anywhere near the office!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

there's a bagel place downstairs (ruthy's) but the one i'm talking about is in astoria. basically i'm looking for a houseboy more than an intern, ya see

maura (maura), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

oh. i thought you had a houseboy, per se. ruthy's doesn't have tofu cream cheese, so fuck that place.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

i want a bagel place that has like 20 different kinds of tofu spreads, like the place on demo square.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

joe works 9-5 m-f usually.

brooklyn bagel (around the corner) delivers but it takes upwards of an hour for the whole process to be completed on most days.

maura (maura), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

At my job my boss hired a new employee who knows so little that she is doing nothing useful most of the time.

WOULD I BE IN THE WRONG TO SEND HER TO GO GET BAGELS FOR US?

absolutego (ex machina), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

which corner? i'll check it. grabbing one on the way to work >>>> delivery anyway.

xpost - no.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Fuck you liberal arts majors? Fuck you people with a fixed position rather than a "do three totally different things" position. The other day someone was like, "Oh, you're really good at this accounting stuff, were you a math major?" And I was all like, no, creative writing...

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 1 April 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

And yes, I know, blah blah blah at least I have a job.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 1 April 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

hey, I don't have a fixed position. Fuck you! I manage security policy for my school's webserver; develop web apps for the uni, support end user web developers, etc

As much as I wouldn't mind this thread crawling away to the archives to die...

you can look forward to "a huge education in how to pack packages and affix postage meter strips."

oh well. you have to do menial shit wherever you intern. i didn't assume that i'd be doing anything all that challenging. i only mentioned V2 records because of Moby... I wouldn't mind sitting around scrubbing grammies and eating vegan crab cakes if we were listening to Pavement. I've had to do much worse shit. My last three jobs were washing dishes/toilets, delivering pizza (actually kind of fun in a weird way) and campaigning door-to-door for the democratic party in the second reddest state in the US, respectively.

i know an internship isn't necessarily barrels of fun or a "gateway to success." i should have stressed that I would get (a lot of) course credit/hours for an internship, so I'd rather do that (regardless of monotony) than take yet another theatre studies course.

But he's just trying to get noticed.

there you go. (thanks)

poortheatre, is that yr correct email address? i'll send you some matador contacts.

yes. thanks, man.
