Cure-lovers vs Corgan haters, Bee Gee lovers vs Cure haters -- all the combinations are here. This might kill ILM once and for all.

Has anyone heard this yet?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

no one that's lived to tell the tale.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

No but if anyone has it can they YSI or gmail it or something?

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

I assume that Cure-Lovers = Corgan-Lovers = Massive hallucinogenic drug users. So presumably Ned will be along in a minute to tell us how Baldy Billy has re-invented the Bee Gees. He'll be lying.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, I *am* here but reinvention is codswallop. I'll just wait and see how it sounds.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

"To Love Somebody" is a great goddamn song. Firewater actually recorded a cover of it, but sadly never released it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

that is sad.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Soz, that was very mean-spirited of me. I'm dead drunk. On the other hand, everything I said was true.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

I heard it was produced by Phil Spector.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Double soz. I didn't mean to imply that I thunk Ned was wrong - I love you, man - I just think Billy is a ridiculous idiot. Because I assume he can't comprehend his own short-coming. Akshully Billy, I wouldn't be so mean-spirited if I were sober and I didn't think you didn't hang down Queen's bitching about Sage.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

this is a fun song to sing. the phrasing on the original bee gees track is so cockeyed. they were about 10x as weird as re smith and bill corgan ever have been.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

there's a certain kind of light that never shines on me...
there's a way everybody say...what good will it bring?
I'm so doggone sad...

James Carr did it, for Goldwax, in 1969, and it's superb...

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

Do not assume that Cure lovers = Corgan lovers.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

and why not ? - it couldn't be worse than faith no more covering "i started a joke"

fatbob, Friday, 1 April 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Sean OTM (for the opposite reason in my case obv).

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Do not assume that Cure lovers = Corgan lovers.

OTM!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

wait, so is this an april fool's joke or not?

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

nope, it's for real.

The 11-track set includes a cover of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody" that features the Cure's Robert Smith on backing vocals.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

"Many people assume when I do more progressive work that I am trying to move away from something, when honestly what I am trying to do is get closer to who I really am," Corgan says of the upcoming album. "I tried to sum up all my feelings about my life and the world around me in the most beautiful ways I could dream up. It is easy to be negative, and much harder to find that silver lining behind the clouds of modern society."

While working on the album, Corgan also wrote a volume of poetry, "Blinking With Fists," which reached the New York Times' best-seller list.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

Do not assume that Cure lovers = Corgan lovers.

Exactly. In particular, the reactions of the Cure lovers/Corgan haters (lots of those around here) will be interesting (and volatile).

wait, so is this an april fool's joke or not?

Until I saw Spencer's post, it hadn't occured to me that a lot of people probably think this thread is a joke!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

faith no more are immune to making bad cover songs

chris andrews (fraew), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

I like Janis Joplin's version of this song and think it will be hard to beat.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

I haven't had high expectations for anything Corgan has done since Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness.

-the-night-watch- (-the-night-watch-), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

See I've always lumped the Cure and the Smashink Pumpkinks together as ridiculous Romantics who would benefit from making contact with the 20th century. And obviously Bill and Bob have come to the same misclusion.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 1 April 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

VADE RETRO

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 1 April 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

"See I've always lumped the Cure and the Smashink Pumpkinks together as ridiculous Romantics who would benefit from making contact with the 20th century"

...but that's the best thing about them! :)
anyway, as a Cure and Bee Gees fan I'm rather curious to hear it.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 1 April 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

They're probably both ridiculous but I don't think they're big- or small-r R/romantics in the same way. To the extent that I can follow their lyrics at all (and of course it's not just a lyrical thing anyway), the Pumpkins were usually way more solipsistic, more just focused on one's feelings towards oneself, more what I would actually consider "angst" as opposed to romantic tragedy (or euphoria).

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

James Carr did it, for Goldwax, in 1969, and it's superb...
As usual, edd s hurt beat me to the punch. Which Mary Wells did for Motown in 1962.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

(Don't know anything about this track though. Don't think I even know the original.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

It's a great song. The story is they wrote it for Otis Redding, but gave up on him recording it because, well, he died, so they did it themselves.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe this is not an April Fool's joke.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

It's in the Chicago Sun-Times today too, so I'm guessing it's not.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

there was an official press release dated march 31st by Warner Bros. yesterday on marketwire - so absolutely no fools day joke.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I'd be more interested if he decided to cover "Odessa."

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

They should have done "How Deep Is Your Love".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Actually I heard about this two months back or so, thus my relative lack of surprise about it all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 April 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

"I'd be more interested if he decided to cover 'Odessa.' "

you beat *me* to the the punch, Ken L.! Pick: "Marley Purt Drive." Actually, you know, I'd like to hear Rufus Wainwright cover "Mother and Jack" from "Robin's Reign"...

I don't know the Mary Wells or the Joplin covers of this song...I've been really into James Carr the last few days, and man his take on it is good.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Um, I don't think Mary Wells did "To Love Somebody." But she did do "You Beat Me To The Punch."

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

gotcha Ken. It's the pain medidcation and whishskey, is a making me slow...

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Sweat'n'growl Texas rockers Slobberbone recorded this one a couple years ago. That it sounded not bad at all is testament to the greatness of the song.
