Church of the Poison Mind

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

"Karma Chameleon": the harmonica, the beautiful middle eight ("Every day is like survival"), the fantastic lyrics, which portend a wisdom George himself only copped to years later.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

i discovered "mistake no.3" in 1989- i thought they only had 3 lps.

goy beorge, Friday, 1 April 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

"church of the poison mind" for me too but if "time" didn't have that sax in it it'd give "church" a run for it's money.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

I think I liked "The Medal Song" but not certain - only heard it a couple of times. I used to feign hatred for "Karma Chameleon", but really it's just the chorus that kinda annoyed me, plus the fact that it was on the charts for half the year, seemingly. Nothing can match "Poison Mind" for propulsion (and harmonica, and Helen Terry) but I'll still take the seductive lite-reggae of "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me", everytime. If I can ever find a cheap compilation with all those fine singles, I'll buy it instantly - despite the risk of accidentally subjecting myself to "The War Song". (Not all people are stupid, Georgie-boy)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

"do you really want to hurt me"

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

"Time" was pre-teen Leonard Cohen in my backwoods world.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 1 April 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Karma Chameleon...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Friday, 1 April 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

That would be "Karma Chameleon". Loved it at 12, and I still consider it a great popsong.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 1 April 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

"Time (Clock Of The Heart)". Easy. Next!

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 1 April 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

"Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" is the only reggae song I like, but there's one CC song I like more. I just don't want to be the first to admit it.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 1 April 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

'Bow Down Mister'.

OK, 'Church Of The Poisoned Mind'.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Friday, 1 April 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Is it 'Poison' or 'Poisoned'?

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Friday, 1 April 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

'Poison'.

I see it nestles on my iRiver next to 'Karma Chameleon', 'Do You Really..', 'Time..' and 'Victims'. Forgot they were there.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Friday, 1 April 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" is the only reggae song I like

i hope this was intended as a joke, if not i feel very sad for you.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 1 April 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

It's not, and don't be!

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 1 April 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Is 'Move Away' your favourite, edward?

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Friday, 1 April 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

No!

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 1 April 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

'I'll Tumble 4 Ya'?

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Friday, 1 April 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

Damn it.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 1 April 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

"Time (Cock of the Heart)".

It's just beautiful.

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha!!! Lyra, if it was actually titled that it would definitely be my favorite!!!

Seb (Seb), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

"Move Away." No question.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 1 April 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

"White Boy" or "That's the Way (I'm Only Trying to Help You)."

ffirehorse, Friday, 1 April 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Time (Cock of the Heart)

I am going to meditate on this for the rest of the weekend...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

That was actually the original song title but the stiffs at Virgin nixed it.

bahtology, Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

Church of the Poison Mind. But I'll Tumble For Ya is great too..

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 2 April 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

I remember watching them performing Church of the Poison Mind on some awards or other show of equal fluff when I was 6. It was fucking awesome. Still my fave.

nicole simone (nicole simone), Saturday, 2 April 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

**"Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" is the only reggae song I like**

Well it could have been worse. At least you didn't say the Police.

"The War Song" is the only protest song I like...

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 2 April 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

The song Boy George did with PM Dawn "More Than Likely" is my fave BG moment EVAH.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 2 April 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Hate to jump on the bandwagon but for me it really is "Karma Chameleon."

Boy often gets shelved under "novelty act" for obvious reasons, but he turned in a few truly outstanding vocal performances, and this is one. The extraordinarily tasteful little melisma on "green" when he sings "red, gold and gree-ee-ee-een" is classic.

And the breakdown with the quasimilitary snare part? Tasty.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Saturday, 2 April 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

seven years pass...

did they ever do anything as close to as good as "karma chameleon"

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 19:52 (twelve years ago)

church of the poison mind comes close, but even 'close' is a relative term. karma holds a rarified spot

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 20:09 (twelve years ago)

"Time (Clock of the Heart)" is much better iirc, and i love "Church of the Poisoned Mind" too. think "Karma Chameleon" has probly been overexposed over here.

KC's middle eight is unearthly ("Every daaaaaay is like survival...")

Colour By Numbers must be heard in its entirety. "That's the Way (I'm Only Trying to Help You)," "Black Money" and "Mister Man" are as good as the singles.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:15 (twelve years ago)

victims is pretty good too

jed_, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:44 (twelve years ago)

didn't include it only cuz it was a single -- I was making a case for the album tracks -- but YES.
