Do you know Todd Patrick? www.toddpnyc.com.
Perhaps you've been to one of the hundreds of
shows he's selflessly promoted over the years
throughout Brooklyn.
In the last few months, Todd's been working hard
to build out his very own venue, the Llano
Estacado, in Williamsburg. It's a great big
pre-Civil War room with great natural sound and a
lot going for it. Todd started having shows there
in January and things quickly soared in
popularity. On March 4, however, local police and
fire dept. officials cited Todd with several code
violations, and in order to protect his space, he
shut it down until the necessary improvements
could be made. And he's been making those
improvements himself.
So I ran into Todd at his show for Black Mountain
tonight and talked with him for a while about the
situation. He really could use some volunteers
this weekend to help him out with construction in
the space. His deadline for most of the work to be
completed is Tuesday, April 5th, and he can get
there with your help. You don't need tools but if
you have them it's very welcome. You should be an
able-bodied person who can deal with a spot of
hard labor, and you should dress appropriately
(clothes you don't care about, workboots if you
got em).
The weather is supposed to be rainy this weekend,
so spending int warm and dry indoors while you
help a great guy get a DIY concert venue in proper
condition should be a no-brainer.
Todd's working from 10am-10pm this Saturday and
Sunday. I'm not going to be there for all of it
but I will be blocking out 3-4 hours each day to
help. That's kind of a reaonable commitment for
you, even if you can only come by one day.
Get in touch if you're interested in helping out,
and I'll coordinate w/ Todd and get back to you.

If I weren't sick in bed right now, I'd be there.
The Llano Estacato space is great and the shows he's been putting together have been a nice addition to NYC. If anyone can make this, it's definetly for a good cause.

four years pass...
one year passes...
285 Kent should be closed down. Horrible, dangerous room.
I do have to admit that the 12" by 15" AC on the stage's wall, in a 95-degree room filled with 400 people, gave me a chuckle.

I went to plenty in my youth, but really, the suffering factor here can't all have been my broken-down body.

My friend who was at the same show said on fb that "It was like being in a plastic bag with no air holes while a hot blow-dryer pumped more and more air in until you felt like you were going to puke and then melt and then finally cease to exist. Also, while 300 sweaty guys ram into you. I mean, I guess I was sort of into it though."

crystal stilts and vivian girls at silent barn a couple years ago was probably the hottest show I've ever been to, practically had sweat pooling in my shoes

i think that stupid big black curtain at 285 is making it worse. i felt like i was going to die at ford and lopatin but then once i crossed the curtain line all of a sudden there was oxygen in my brain again.

I think the worst I've ever experienced were two diff shows (Mogwai and Sleater-Kinney), both at the Starlight Ballroom in Philly. I remember leaving both just as saturated as if I'd showered in my clohtes. After Mogwai I had to actually wring out my tshirt bcz it was sopping wet with sweat. At Sleater-Kinney, Janet Weiss got up btwn songs and started handing people water bottles because we were all about to die.

the Iceage set was the first time I've been on the edge of moshpit in eons; wanted no part of it. Also, they were playing New Day Rising on the PA before the show, I think I was one of 3 ppl there old enough to have seen that tour (also lolled at hearing some 24-yo explain to a girl who Bob Mould was -- "the shirtless guy with the gray beard on that magazine cover").

285 Kent is miserable but the city's pointless crackdown on other DIY venues has made it harder and harder to put on a decent sized DIY show anywhere.
