Kurt Rosenwinkel: C/D?

I just saw this guy at the Village Vanguard tonight. Bored to tears! Why all the hype about this Pat Metheney wannabe, this wanker straight out of an instructional video? Drummer Jeff Ballard was the only thing that saved the evening of virtually indistinguishable academic compositions.

His first couple albums are pretty smoking. Crazy tunes, fresh sound and ideas, and, um, Jeff Ballard. His 'electronic' album was pretentious wank, though (produced by Q-Tip!). Maybe he's fading.

I also like his playing on Mark Turner's 'Dharma Days', where it's just those two + Nasheet Waits and a bass player (Ben Street I think?).

He also replaced Jeff Parker in the Brian Blade Fellowship and is on the amazing second album, though he's a relatively minor part of it(great solos on a couple of tunes though).

The set had plenty of intensity and pyrotechnics, but it was all too perfect-sounding, and his guitar sound really puts me to sleep. And I find his playing to be pretty much devoid of melody. And the compositions all had the exact same ambiguous, uneasy mood.

Jeff Parker was in the Brian Blade Fellowship?

When I was near ready to spend the rest of the set in the bathroom, Ballard opened a tune with a truly otherworldly solo. At the beginning, it actually sounded like he might have been playing with his hands. I wish I had had a better view.

Yeah dude, I bet you'd love the Brian Blade Fellowship. It's like epic folk jazz.

Ballard's playing on Chick Corea's records is just sick, I hardly even want to listen to it. Does he still look like a dirty hippie?

I know what you mean about the mood of those tunes btw.

nineteen years pass...

He's doing a residency at the Village Vanguard this week with the same group that recorded The Next Step including Jeff Ballard. Some tix left for the Sunday late show but otherwise standby only. Love the album, so may try my luck this weekend.

I guess this is why they’re doing the residency:

Oooh, nice. I listened to a podcast with him and I hadn't realized that the Next Step was born out of retuning his guitar so he would get out of his patterns and play more by ear, I wonder if he relearned everything in standard tuning at some point?
