listening to music for the band, not for the singer

I often find myself returning to all the early Elvis Costello albums just to listen to the Attractions. And if that last Tool album was mostly instrumental, I'd probably be fine with that, too.

So what other albums do people listen to for the musicians, and not much for the singers?

(I'd include Zeppelin, too, except at this point I consider Plant's shriek an instrument in and to itself.)

Talk Talk - the vocals are dire, the music is near perfect

Dadaismus (Dada), Saturday, 2 April 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine The Tindersticks' music to be quite good but I've never managed to get beyond the singer (how can anyone take that band seriously?!??!) Oh, and LAMBCHOP.

Dadaismus (Dada), Saturday, 2 April 2005 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

As the singer carries the melody, no.

Dismemberment Plan, though it's getting to (has gotten to) the point where I can't listen to them at all.

good call on the tindersticks. i can take the vocals in only small doses, which is why 'nenette et boni' is my favorite of theirs.

Lambchop was a good answer by Dadaismus back there.

LAMBCHOP?!!
man, couldn't agree less.
the music is good but it would be another lush bland alt.country or indie r&b pastiche if the Wagner's voice wasn't so unsettling, arresting, and his lyrics weren't so great (when they're great, which is half the time, not a bad average).

I've never done this with any band. I don't understand how Maynard James Keenan, Mark Hollis, and Elvis Costello sound so awful.
