From what artist do you own the most products?

Products include albums, t-shirts, posters, etc. No MP3's though. Only things you actually dished out money for.

I lost my entire CD collection just a little over a year ago, so right now I only have about fifty CD's. Out of those fifty, 7 of them are Songs:Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co.

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 3 April 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

It would be Sting, with David Sylvian as a very close second.

bahtology, Sunday, 3 April 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Sonic Youth

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 3 April 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

john fahey. no t-shirts tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 April 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Another vote for Sonic Youth, although Robyn Hitchcock, John Coltrane and Emmylou Harris aren't far behind.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

also Sonic Youth for me, definitely. although if we were talking individual musicians, Steve Shelley would take the lead with his side projects. also a few hip hop producers that have done one or a few tracks on a ton of albums, like Kanye West, Timbaland, etc.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

Kraftwerk: vinyl and t-shirts
Charles Bukowski - books and audio tapes
Herge - tintin
Bill Coby - vinyl
Herbie Hancock - vinyl
John Coltrane - vinyl

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

It's Nurse WIth Wound, by a large margin. I've got t-shirts and a wristwatch, a book, and acres of vinyl and CDs. I'm just a sad fanboy where NWW is concerned.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Nick Cave - CD's, books, t-shirts, posters

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

The Who by quite a large margin, even if you don't include Townshend and Entwistle solo (not much Daltrey). And the only band I own more than one t-shirt of.

Mickey, my condolences on the loss of your collection -- having just lost about 20 discs to a car break-in, I don't even want to think about losing the whole batch.

JC-L (JC-L), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

dEUS. They have made just a couple of records, but I managed to get ALL of it. Well, nearly.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Weezer (shameful)
Belle & Sebastian (still shameful)

ihope, Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Prince

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

ihope, feel free to donate your B&S CD's to me!

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Cocteau Twins

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

The Fall

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

The Damned

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Radiohead by a long shot, with CDs (all the official releases and quite a few bootlegs), t-shirts, books and tape bootlegs.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Sunday, 3 April 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Easily Spacemen 3 + descendents.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 3 April 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

KISS, by far... most of high school was spent buying KISS stuff... their entire album collection, KISS masks, KISS action figures, KISS phone, KISS wall paper, KISS concert tickets, KISS guitar picks, KISS vinyls, KISS posters, KISS makeup kits, KISS condoms, etc...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

The Fall by a mile

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

foetus/foetus related.

John Justen (johnjusten), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Beatles by a mile if you count solo records.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Boredoms if you count side projects.....

Maybe Unwound second?

absolutego (ex machina), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Fugazi (especially if you count other bands they've been in)

Beastie Boys (I actually don't have a single album post-Ill Communication...but I was a little obsessive in junior high and bought t-shirts, videos, etc.)

Modest Mouse

Other than that, there's relatively few bands of whom I've bought more than two records. I think I have a short attention span

Priti Batta (priti), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Definitely Radiohead. Though I own far fewer Radiohead-related items than one would think.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

It might be Jandek at this point.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Looks like either Robyn Hitchcock or The Fall.

dlp9001, Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Tom Waits, counting the badly transcribed songbooks he probably didn't have a hand in and the Big Time video I have yet to recieve after a month. If I get stiffed it's probably Belle and Sebastian or the Beatles.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

The Fall again. They were always gonna figure here innit, due to the massive discog (multipled by TWO poor reissues + ONE good reissue for each LP) to the power of 2.4 redundant comp appearances per track, etc, etc.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

The Fall, yeah.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

the fall, sonic youth, neil young, kraftwerk, david bowie, the clean

in approx. that order

chris andrews (fraew), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

wait! totally forgot about nick cave (1st) and stereolab (between the fall and sonic youth)...weird

chris andrews (fraew), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

it used to be the chills because i had everything they ever did flexis and interviews and stuff like that up until 1996 or so but now i think i might have more pram stuff and i can imagine my ironing board is a pram ironing board. i tend to lose interest in artists so i stop assembling things as they get older.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Miles Davis.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

sonic youth

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

PJ Harvey

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

James Brown by a terrifyingly huge margin, and I say this as somebody who owns every Fall record.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I lost my entire CD collection just a little over a year ago

wow, that's really sad. seems like a nightmare to me

for me it's radiohead

rizzx, Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

But you ARE the expert there, arent'cha Douglas?

Somewhere betwixt Prince, Stevie Wonder, John Coltrane, Tom Waits and They Might Be Giants; owing to each one's respectively MASSIVE catalogues.
The likely winner there is Prince.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

GbV. although the artist i own the most vinyl (not cds) by is the sugargliders (ten 45s)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

David Bowie, easily.

Telephonething, Sunday, 3 April 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Cocteau Twins for me as well.

Clothing - easily Pop Will Eat Itself, I'm a sucker for the Designer's Republic stuff.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Sunday, 3 April 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

A tie between PJ Harvey, the Fall, and the Birthday Party, I think.

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 3 April 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

The Cure.

losingsoul, Monday, 4 April 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

i'm sad and disheartened that the band i own the second most products by is Hefner. darn near 30 of the damn things.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 4 April 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Killing Joke, the Stranglers, Cop Shoot Cop, Iron Maiden and Devo

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 April 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Robyn Hitchcock by a country mile.

Erik The Mainer (EZSnappin), Monday, 4 April 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

in order

Todd Rundgren
Rolling Stones
Bob Dylan
Neil Young
Van Morrison

Strangely, my wife beats me at all of these with her collection of The Lennon Sisters.
Yes, The Lennon Sisters.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 4 April 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

i seem to be painfully average here. sonic youth and radiohead. radiohead is more merch too, like t-shirt, book, stuff like that. sonic youth is more albums.

oh and i have a ton of miles davis albums. probably right under sonic youth.

jonathan - stl, Monday, 4 April 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

It's Zorn and Zappa running neck and neck, 50-60 items by each, with one non-music item each: the Old Masters Box One t-shirt and the Arcana book that Zorn edited.

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Monday, 4 April 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Bob Dylan, followed by the Fall. Sonic Youth and John Coltrane are nearly up there too.

Schwip Schwap (schwip schwap), Monday, 4 April 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

I can't wait to blow my money on Chingo Bling merchandise.

djdee (djdee2005), Monday, 4 April 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it's possible, in this category. to catch up with the teenaged self, who in this post bought a daft amount of stuff by The Stone Roses/Morrissey & The Smiths/Manic Street Preachers.

In the last 5 years I have spent most money on Bob Dylan, I reckon, but only because he has so many normal CDs. No t-shirts, posters, rare singles. A bootleg 'Eat the Document' that was unwatchable maybe counts, although he didn't get any of the cash.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 4 April 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

billstevejim, Monday, 4 April 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

American Music Club / Mark Eitzel solo - everything they've done, minus a few cassette only and tour CDS.

Felt - the lot on vinyl and CD, except their first single.

Bill A, Monday, 4 April 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

Hm. Probably Madness. Marc Almond (if incl Soft Cell stuff) and The Smiths are runners-up, I guess.

OleM (OleM), Monday, 4 April 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

sun ra vs george clinton

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 4 April 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Sufjan Stevens (all his albums) well that's only 4..
I still need to buy some Sufjan posters I guess...
I don't think there are Sufjan Stevnes t-shirts right? That would look pretty stupid in the Netherlands anyway, where Sufjan = Dull John

Ludo (Ludo), Monday, 4 April 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

Miles Davis, Sonic Youth, George Jones, George Clinton

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 4 April 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to mention Prince, Madonna, Sonic Youth and Neil Young (the latter's records have however mysteriously disappeared!)

mark e (mark e), Monday, 4 April 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

The Go-Betweens: all the CDs, a couple of LPs, and plenty of the singles on vinyl, bought up way before the current wave of re-issues which does include B-sides etc.

alext (alext), Monday, 4 April 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Derek Bailey, Miles & Sun Ra, all nudging the "200 Items" mark one way or another. The Zorn collection's just gone into three figures as well.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 4 April 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

er, severed heads, finitribe (finiflex, heck i even have a jacket!) and, um, nitzer ebb.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Momus by a long chalk.

10 original albums plus Super Madrigals and The Gongs, and second-hand Happy Family and Laila France.

That's unprecidented! I think the joint seconds are Bally Sagoo and Tom Waits with 4 originals apiece.

phil jones (interstar), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

sonic youth, dylan, blur, mikami kan

b b, Monday, 4 April 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Bryan Ferry, New Order, Dylan.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Odd music-related products I have needlessly accumulated and currently horde like the geeky fanboy dweeb I truly am:

1 Portishead coffee mug - (procured at their Supper Club show in `95)
1 deck of Stranglers playing cards - conventional playing cards with a red back with a black Raven logo on them.
3 Iron Maiden coffee mugs - `cos y'know, one wouldn't have been enough.
1 AC/DC bottle opener - procured from the Bonfire box set.
1 Devo energy dome - purchased at their Radio City Music Hall show of October 31, 1981
1 Devo "yellow suit" - procured from "Club Devo" via the order form in the LP of Freedom of Choice
1 Wonder Stuff fleece - purchased from their 2000 reunion shows at the Forum in Kentish Town, London
1 Killing Joke lighter
1 Firewater coaster
1 pair of Kiss logo boxer shorts - a X-mas gift from my mother-lin-law (!!!!!!)
2 backwards-turning Malicious Damage clocks (KJ's old label)...as once again, one just wouldn't be enough.
1 Pop-O-Pies coffee mug.

...and more Kiss action figures than can be counted.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Most of my lovingly framed posters now reside in storage, and will hopefully see the light of day some day when we move to a bigger space (not holding my breath).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Ho-hum, MX-80 Sound. Records, tapes, CDs, magazines & clippings, flyer, T-shirt, video, etc.

Speaking strictly about recordings by/books about, John Coltrane is far in the lead.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I'll second Jandek...
Wedding Present is probably running a close second although I haven't bought anything by them in maybe 10 years.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Sonic Youth and Stereolab are both at around 10 albums (that's including EPs) for me. Stereolab gets the edge because I also have a t-shirt. Oh wait, but I have a Sonic Youth sticker! And Alec Foege's Confusion is Next! Okay, it's a draw.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Dylan, I guess: about 13 albums and a copy of Chronicles.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Charles Ives

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm disappointed that so few people are mentioning how many products of said artist they own.

I just found out that I'm getting 3 new Songs:Ohia / Magnolia Electric Co. CD's for my birthday, so now out of around 55 CD's, 10 of them are S:O/MEC. Man.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 4 April 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Third place surprised me a bit, actually:

1st: 28 Morton Feldman CDs
2nd: 23 Elliott Carter CDs
3rd: 19 Milton Babbitt CDs (plus one book by and one about)

I sold all my Elliott Carter t-shirts on e-bay last year.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 4 April 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

By numbers, U2 (nine CDs). By percentage or the artists' output, the Dismemberment Plan (very close to 100 percent).

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

Wu Tang (and family). 63 CDs, and one (RZA) book!

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 4 April 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Miles.

there are 63 wu-tang cds?, i take it that includes singles?

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 4 April 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

The Beatles and James Brown

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 4 April 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

love their work together

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 4 April 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

I own 36 albums by either Paul McCartney solo or bands where he used to be a member.

If that doesn't count, then David Bowie would be the one, I think.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Mark e and I should probably start a foetus support group. It is uncanny how much money one can spend trying to absorb Mr. Thirlwell/Ruin's output. 73 items and counting...

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

chris andrews, I assume he means Wu Tang members' solo projects also.

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

If we're talkin' most discs by....

41 by Killing Joke
31 by U2
30 by the Wedding Present
28 by the Wonder Stuff
25 by the Stranglers
25 by the Mission
24 by XTC
24 by the Cocteau Twins
23 by Julian Cope
21 by the Cure
21 by Kiss
20 by Devo
18 by Metallica
17 by Iron Maiden
15 by Robyn Hitchcock
15 by Cop Shoot Cop
15 by Ride (how this happened, I'll never know)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit, Alex. Now I understand how and why you manage to mention Killing Joke in almost every single thread.

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

Mickey, for what it's worth, I own about 50 titles by Miles -- mostly CD, a few on vinyl. I have three copies of 'In a Silent Way,' if not four. Two or three each of 'Jack Johnson,' 'Relaxin',' 'Miles Ahead,' 'Miles in the Sky' and 'Kind of Blue.' Have rebought 'Miles Smiles' after losing my copy on a working vacation. And I own a hardcover edition of the autobiography.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised there are so few Beach Boys answers on here. That seems to be my weakness, if you incude bootlegs and books.

morgen, Tuesday, 5 April 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

It's a toss up between New Order and Cabaret Voltaire, though I think New Order may win if you include Joy Division and books about Factory.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

There are 71 Wu Tang albums (including solo and Wu-family)...ah, the eternal hunt for those last 8.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Alex...

15 CD's by Cop Shoot Cop! Are we talking including offshoots, or are these bootlegs, or do I need to go spend a bunch more money on stuff I never new existed?

If you could point me in the direction of how to find these, I would be most appreciative. I only have five, and am now sad. Email me if you have the time or inclination, please...

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Stereolab, Nina Simone, Beck, Bob Dylan, Pogues, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus.

James Brown, too--nearly all the King and Polydor LPs, buncha singles, CD reissues, some "Free James Brown" bumper sticker I never put on my bumper, a JB button, cassettes.

Gilberto Gil is second--CDs, lotsa repackingings, etc.
