John Carimanica did a piece about the weird marriage of country and hip-hop at the Pop Conf this past weekend, and he showed a clip of that video in question.

I am liking the album a lot; the guy is a total fucking cornball, but so what, that only makes him better. In at least one cut he sounds surprisingly like Bubba Sparxxx. The last cut on the album, where he raps in several languages especially Mandarin Chinese while Big Kenny sings the chorus to "Jesus Loves the Little Children of the World," is tailor made for Radio Disney, who I bet will play it like crazy if anybody brings it to their attention. (Lots of French, too. Last line on album: "Shake a hand, don't raise a fist," something like that.) Also Tim McGraw is one cut, and there's one Tejano move....

I played "Chicken" about ten times in a row last night, Isabel had just bought a rocking chair, so we took it in turns to rock along.

i wrote a long long essay on this (about 3k words), and i am thinking of but i think that Chicken, Texas, etc--has a really complicated conceptualism and has an idea for history that people dont realise, and asks questions about race, exuality, camp, what pop means, the political subtext in country, specatacle, eccentricity, mainstreaming, etc etc---and as well, it manages to be really really listenable, open, free, fuckable and fantastic, a grand orgy of southern history, a gangbang of miscengationary joy.

if anyone wants to read the essay--email me (Tom, Chuck--hint)

It's leaked now.

One listen in, it sounds like a keeper. Thank goodness.
