I bought this on a whim, mostly cos the album cover is bonkers and I found it to be confusingly enjoyable. I really can't say I've heard anyone that sounds like this kind of 21st century schizoid slap metal but it works better in practice than on paper so I won't try too hard to describe it. Could do with more vocals (though the few lyrics are actually quite imaginative) and the track titles ("Metal Desert", "Poo + Wee") are entertaining enough.

Anyone else heard this?

Also - anyone know where they're from? My money's on Brighton for some reason.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 4 April 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

I think they're based in London, but one of the members is also in UK doom types Cathedral who are from the Midlands, in origin at least. It's a good album, agreed, if a bit overbearing at times

Cathedral eh? Cool!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

they are from London. Drummer milo also makes music with mark broom as Kruton.
he is very good friends w/ Tim G from DFA. They opened for Sunn-o @ Tonic January 1 2005. they are great.

two years pass...

So has anyone else heard the new album? It's called Pre-Emptive False Rapture (me neither) and is really rather good. Totally mad but great fun.

Chris in Belfast, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

haven't heard them but kruton is a great name for a band...

m0stlyClean, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

Ha yeah it is. Needs to be said out loud really.

This is fairly good. I bought it more or less on the strength of the opening two tracks, which I listened to at Sister Ray's listening post through headphones, and was awed by. It's not QUITE so impressive on a hi-fi, but hey, it's one of those you've gotta give time to grow. Certainly some very bizarre stuff going on. Think dance-prog-metal and you're about halfway there.

It's better than fairly good. Tonyte, especially, is balling.

Louis will now get into Cathedral, grow a beard and become a doom metaller.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

Why go back to doom-metal when you can party like these guys?

ecuador_with_a_c, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

i saw them a month ago and they were phenomenal.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

i simply need to see them, the album fucking slew (as stated above) and there is no 9 foot goat-dancer on the album

Just got offed, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

jabba hands, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

A RITUAL FOR ELEPHANT AND CASTLE

FUCK YEAH!!

(OK, Marcus Coates was annoying, I wanted the silver space-queen to EAT HIS SOUL but fortunately she did, and then he went away and they carried on being shiny and amazing.)

Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 6 June 2009 08:34 (sixteen years ago)

did they pull it off, that whole ritual thing? No.

they put on a great spectacle, (the dancers looked like they'd been borrowed from from Starlight Express) but i thought they had real trouble sustaining an atmosphere - partly Coates's fault. Only the last few songs were really interesting, and the coy encores after most of the audience had left seemed a bit desperate. I also don't rate the singer much

However I did seriously enjoy the doom-metal when the bassist sang - it was silly but it was the only part of the show that had any SOUL.

I've seen them live twice now, once at Supersonic a couple of years ago and then this time at the Barbican show, and I've really enjoyed it immensely both times. Excellent live. A huge sound, great fun.

I really loved it when it first came out but cooled on it a little bit towards the end of the year. They're a great live band though... 'Tonyte' was a staple of my DJ sets for ages but slowed down to a more user friendly 135bpm.

Bonnie Tyler The Creator (Doran), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

I have had the inverse reaction. First few listens it was ok, a little baffling, not sure about it...then having listened to it again recently I fucking adore the bastard. Whole thing. Complete thrillride.

'Tonyte' wasn't one of my '23 best songs of the decade' for no reason yknow ;)

Would I like Chrome Hoof? Great name

Elderflower Gimcrax Flores (admrl), Thursday, 11 August 2011 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

I thought I really liked them but the last album made me realize that I only really liked some of their songs. I found the last album to be dry and boring. Didn't like the drum sound. No a lot of catchy number either. "Tonyte" is wicked though and I'd love to see them live.

everything, Friday, 12 August 2011 01:59 (fourteen years ago)

it is a great name isn't it! i was excited to see them live but it was kind of awful. i mean it was funny in a car crash way but not actually 'good' you know. 'tonyte' is easily their best tune imo.

well into this after hearing it on resonance over the weekend...

Format: LP
Release Date: 14th November 2011

BOOZE is the illegitimate offspring of Milo Smee (Chrome Hoof, Binary Chaffinch) and Demian Castellanos (The Oscillation). conceived during a few sweaty evenings in the studio whilst they took respite from their main projects, BOOZE channels the infidel urges of two musicians at the peak of their deviant prowess. From the wild flailing thrust of 'Mescal Talking' to the fevered dervish of 'Bronze Release', the prog stupor of 'The Last Straw' to the nocturnal locomotion and spontaneous combustion of 'Insanity Drive' (which featured on dc recordings 'death before distemper 2' compilation a few years ago), BOOZE is an untameable beast, swaggering uncontrollably through musical moods like a sordid being intent on unknowable deeds.

pagan diskow (Crackle Box), Monday, 26 March 2012 11:35 (thirteen years ago)

I forgot this band existed! Somehow I'd conflated them with gang gang dance of all things

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Monday, 26 March 2012 12:05 (thirteen years ago)

I got into them after realising Chrome Hoof dude was also Binary Chaffinch (whose few releases I still love). The Oscillation's record from last year "Veils" is also worth checking out, a real improvement on the Oscillaition record from a few years ago.
