Good places to see live music

A friend just saw Antibalas for the third time, at the Knitting Factory in New York. He says it sucked. However, the first two times he saw them they were playing at Joe's Pub - and he thought them phenomenal. Given that the actual music produced was basically identical, and even assuming the sound systems were comparable (which I have no idea about) one experience was worth the money and more, while the other was just a headache.

What - ASIDE from the sound system - makes a good place to see live music?

A friendly local crowd. Nice seating. Deep colours (like Reds) in the decor. Quality beers on tap. Spaces to stand where the PA is a bit quieter. A satisfying smoky smell emanating from the upholstery and carpets at all times. Not too large.

The shape and size of a venue will change the sound, even if the sound systems are identical.

if it is a cramped little dive. bigger more spacious places give the illusion there is not many people there and thus the band gets bummed and doens't play as good.

But if it's too small the sound through the foldback monitors will tend to be not as loud and so the band won't hear themselves as well and play badly..

i've never had problems with foldback in cramped little dives. but then, i've usually had pretty good sound guys when playing in cramped little dives. in fact i've mostly had good sound guys in general. cept those guys from the hi-tones, what retards.

In Melbourne there's only really a half dozen sound guys/girls of any competence, and two of them are in my band. The others are often busy, being good and all they're usually booked solid. So we get stuck with less-than-ideal soundpersons on an all-too-regular basis.

No surprise: the Knitting Factory is one of the worst live music venues in the entire world, not just New York.

The Knitting Factory in LA is just the pits... big, cavernous, expensive drinks and weird speedfreak security guys. They were encouraging us to deface the dressing room with stickers and markers, so it would have that 'authentic' LA rock'n'roll feel. However, the Three Clubs, with a shitty sound system, crowded, smokey, no cover charge... That is a great place to see bands.

Crowded, smoky, bad soundsystem: there must be something significant about this place to make up for these deficits! That's my question: WHAT?
