The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 4 April 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

That's what I said when I saw it this morning, but my wife likes it.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 4 April 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

What's wrong with it? Conceptually, it seems like a bit of a Factory knock-off, but formally, it's great. I love the way the colours work.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 4 April 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

What's it supposed to be?

haha oh shit APPLE i get it!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 4 April 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

It sort of looks like what a broken Pit-Fall cartridge might spit out.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 4 April 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

"factory knock-off" OTM

Don't hate it though, probably will hate it once the album is out and it ties into the "technology" that they have infused their sound with.

It's the MICR check-routing code from the First National Gay Bank (member FDIC).

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 4 April 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Ah, Coldplay. Is there no beginning to their talent?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 4 April 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

I think they should have pulled a "Royal Trux 'Sweet Sixteen'", you know, spell out "X6Y" inside the bowl and all.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

it took me years of seeing it to ever notice what that police cover actually was.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Same here.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Dumb question. What is supposed to be on that police cover?

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

On the Police cover, it's a calculator ASCII style portrait of the band.
On the Coldplay, is that meant to be an Absolut ad?

c'mon, admit it. if that was the new New Order cover, or something from Kompakt, you'd like it (or at least not mind it) just fine. On that note, it's a better cover than Michael Mayer's album...

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

That coldplay one isn't especially bad, I actually kind of like it. Not sure about the thin band just below the white block though.

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

i'm not much of a coldplay fan, but that cover is great. who cares if it's a knockoff? so is lots of great art.

c'mon, admit it. if that was the new New Order cover, or something from Kompakt, you'd like it (or at least not mind it) just fine.

Very true.
We've heard the "Computer Love" rip-off that is "Talk" ... first the music, then the artwork. Next, THE ROBOTS!!!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

Insert "the robots would be more talented than Coldplay" joke here.

cornelius crash (cornelius crash), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

I once listened to "Swamp Thing" for three weeks straight.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Well, quite awful at first glance, but it isn't like it will ever be able to beat The Scorpions' "Virgin Killer" anyway.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

Ladies and gentlefops. I give you Mick Karn's "Titles". Truly no worse a cover ever has been made.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

I kinda dig that one, actually. And the worst Chameleons cover, surely, is...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I was swayed by the fact the rekkid within is a pile of dogs leavings.

And I love Japan.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

No more nonsense about bad Chameleons covers by Reg, as they do not exist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

this will always be my favorite irresponsibly horrible cover:

the coldplay cover looks like an igniter crammed into an iPod

willem (willem), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

ok..i know things got confusing for a while, but ... this always reminded me of a cheap t shirt for some resort town in colorado or the florda keys

Agreed. I quite like his artwork.

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

WTF, those Chameleons - Strange Times and Mick Karn - Titles covers are great. The Neil Young cover is kind of cool too a that bad psychedelic thrift store art way. That New Order cover is truly unredeemable crap though.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

i can't find the rolling 2009 worst cover art thread so i'll post it here:

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

I wonder if the ugliness of the album cover is rooted in the conflicts between her and her label.

^?

I'm more offended by the ghastly album title.

This recent Richard Lloyd album cover has been giving me nightmares:

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

On that other album: is it called "Colour Me Free" or "This Way Up"? Or is it by a band called Joss Stone This Way Up?

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 October 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

is he superimposed over a jimi hendrix portrait there?

it's like a Shark-Cage but for "Your Junk" AKA Your Penis & Balls (stevie), Thursday, 22 October 2009 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i think the Lloyd cover is like a composite of Hendrix, Lloyd, and Lloyd's friend who knew Hendrix. What a great idea! Kind of curious to hear it, though -- it's all Hendrix covers.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

Jamie Neverts? What is that? An anagram?

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

And plans are in the works for his most ambitious album yet: a tribute to his hero Jimi Hendrix, due in 2009, and dedicated to the memory of his best friend as a teenager, Velvert Turner, who was Jimi Hendrix's only authenticated protégé and guitar student. His upcoming release of Jimi Hendrix covers will be released by Parasol Records, and will be titled "The Jamie Neverts Story", Jamie Neverts being the secret codename that Velvert and Lloyd came up with to prevent all the kids in the neighborhood from trying to come along when they went to see Jimi.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

Wow

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

Okay that's pretty great.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

Lloyd sez: The album will be called The Jamie Neverts Story. That was Velvert Turner’s and my secret name for Jimi so that all of the neighborhood kids wouldn’t follow us when we went to see him. Everybody was always hanging around and saying ‘when do we get to go see Jimi?’ So we called him Jamie. But the kids didn’t buy it so we made it up since we’re never going to tell them the truth. So it was like ‘never’ and ‘Velvert.’
PS - Richard Lloyd is kinda crazy. Though he seemed nice when I interviewed him a few years back.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

Hold on, Velvert Turner, didn't he play with Arthur Lee?

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

pps - what in the hell kind of name is "Velvert"!?

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

oh, i don't know! did he?

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

research shows he did in fact play w/ Arthur on some later 70s solo stuff.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:05 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, after all, how many other Velverts would Arthur had had in his band?

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

Think that Joss Stone cover woulda been worse if the paint job were actually completed? Howbout if it hadn't even been begun? Or maybe it's an implicit invitation to finish painting it yourself?

As awful as the final(?) result is, I think the basic colour palette itself is kinda nice.

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 22 October 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

Weird - to me that Richard Lloyd cover looks like it has Arthur Lee superimposed in it. Maybe just the hair.
