Boy goes la la la, girl goes la la la in a harmony stylee alongside.

IMO the loveliest way vocals can be arranged, and not done nearly frequently enough for my liking.

What's the best boy/girl harmonies you've heard?

Ur boy/girl (or rather girl/boy): the Carter Family

Surprisingly not-dodgy contemporary version: I never had much use for Gillian Welch, but her new album features some of the most dee- licious girl/boy harmonizing I've heard in many moons (courtesy Welch and better half David Rawlings). The songs aren't even all that great, but the singing is fantastic.

White-shoe boy girl: the Fleetwoods

Mates of State's shouty thing gets a bit grating after a while tho.

g, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anyway, classic when done right. There's nothing more irritating than badly out of tune harmonizing. Do you draw a distinction between female backing vocals and harmonizing (which I think is when the vocals are more or less equal in the mix)? - there has always been lots of great use of female backing vocals. I've always thought the boy/girl stuff on the Rocketship album is the best in the indiepop genre. There's more good stuff, but I can never think of things when I'm not at home...

g, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mates Of State are GRATE (in the good way, rather than the aforementioned grating way). AND all the best singers couldn't sing. AND The Essex Green are fabulous. AND ummm, I can't think of anything right now.
