Artists who like nothing like they sound like?

I know Jason Pierce of Spiritualized is yearning to write something as deeply affecting as Patsy Cline's "Crazy". And fair enough. Aim high.

But he also has stated that he never ever listens to anything indie or drone-rock. Ooh the fibber. I have no evidence of this, but really!

Then again, a number of artists don't even like the stuff they do, but heck it's a living. See Mickey Jupp's "Old rock and roller" for a case study.

So who else would you never catch listening to their own stuff (or stuff like it) for pleasure?

I can't think of anybody particularly interesting, but I remember that back in the day The Bluetones always used to go on about how much they loved hiphop.

Also, Mick Hucknall apparently likes good music.

Duran Duran famously aspired to be a combination of Chic and the Sex Pistols. Well, I enjoyed Duran but..to be honest...NO FUCKING WAY. And yes, I realize that Nile Rodgers himself wouldn't agree w/me.

I remember when OK Computer came out Radiohead loved to name-drop Can and Magazine in interviews...

Think I misunderstood the question. Perhaps Duran's infamous covers album justifies my answer?

Hardly anybody in indie bands ever admits to liking indie music - or has that changed lately?

Well, for example John Lydon liked Can/Krautrock and so on. So, he does not count.

Whereas I'm sure Simon Cowell doesn't listen to Rachael Stevens albums for pleasure, so he does.

About the last worthwhile thing ever to appear in Q was their 'what they say- what it really means' list a few years ago. Here's a paraphrase- 'We love Lee Perry, Zep, Nick Drake, James Brown and Kraftwerk' = 'we sound like Oasis'.
