Any more?

Did Sly ever play drums on his records?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I know, when he was a producer, he played drums on a few bands' records 'cos hardly any of the folk rock honkies he was producing could hold down a beat

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Howard Jones. I'm told he even played the horns. Not sure whether it's true, though.

Excuse me Geir, Paul McCartney

Only on a terribly underproduced and tuneless album that basically sucked. "McCartney II" was evidence that McCartney was not able to do it all alone.

Also, Howard Jones always used outside drummers on his albums, as he felt he needed drums and he wasn't able to play them himself.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

Also a lot of electronic musicians, surely.

Only if they sing (and those who do sing tend to be more likely to use outside producers)

I'm sure Ray Charles met this description at some point, but I'm just wildly hypothesizing.

I'm sure Ray Charles met this description at some point

In the 60s, during his heyday, the needed technology wasn't around. There was no way one could possibly play all instruments and sing all backing vocals in 1960.

Most of my buddies that play (in bands or solo) are every one of those. Some of them aren't really songwriters and some might not sing. But almost anyone will play several instruments at different levels of ability and, to some degree, have ideas involving the music's production.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

I guess my point is that just about every band out there probably has more than one singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist. Great bands always have two or three of those guys but they have learned to stick to their role within the group. No great musician uses anywhere near ALL of his talent and ability with one band. The ones that rry to are the ones that can ruin an otherwise potentially great band.
