...and I stress it's just an attempt (and a cheap plug), but I'm hoping there are other Northwest lurkers on this here board thingy...

Basically, I'll be co-DJing at Seattle's best bar ever, THE LAVA LOUNGE Thursday, January 24th from 9pm to 2am. If you happen to be in town or live near town and want to come to say hi, I welcome you with open arms ("I KISS YOU!!!!!!!!"). Yes, the music will be somewhat rockist, but rockist WIV WUV!

I don't think the Lava Lounge was there when I lived there--what's it near? (I can't make it, I live 3000 miles away, I'm just curious). Is that Belltown?

Hey guys, I'm moving to Seattle for the summer just to get off of the East Coast. If you live in Seattle or around it, if you wouldn't mind, off board, email me with the highlights of the place. I'm really interested about the town, so if you tell me anything I'll love it. Thanx.

Lucky you, Brock, it's a great city (I lived there about 7 years ago, so I can't offer anything current.)

Mark, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lava Lounge is one the same block as The Crocodile (the Peter Buck owned rock venue), Mama's Kitchen, Shorty's (video game arcade bar), Roq La Rue (Underground art gallery). Across the street from Wall Of Sound records (experimental music store) and Confounded Books/Hypno video (underground comics store) It's quite an amazing block of shops, given the rest of Belltown has become a haven for glistening plastic surgery cases.

Mark, it's possible none of those places were there when you lived there. Was the Rendezvous in existence? It's two blocks away.

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Croccodile was there, so I know where you're talking about. If Mama's Kitchen is a Mexican place, that was there, too. None of the other stuff was (certainly not the record store! The record stores were terrible when I lived in Seattle.)

Belltown used to be pretty much empty. There was a bar on 1st or 2nd called The Front Room that was a fun dive to get a beer in. And there was a great new/used bookstore on 2nd Ave (I think it was called Second Avenue Books, actually -- owned by this guy who dressed like Henry Miller in the 30s) that I used to browse. But it was otherwise empty -- and cheap to live in, too.

I lived at the corner of Olive and, I want to say Bellevue? The base of Capitol Hill. It was accross from a convenience store and a gay bar called The Tacky Tavern. Also, a pizza place called The Olive Tree. Haven't been back in a long time, I'm sure it's changed.

Where do you live, Brian?

Mark, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live just blocks south of the Fremont bridge. Fremont's a fun little place, though it's becoming somewhat GAP-ified as I speak.

Bellevue and Olive... that's a fun little corner these days, actually (or is that Olive and Denny?). Fallout records, a nice breakfast place, two dance record stores now (Beats International and Compound records), Coffee Messiah, Apocalypse Tattoo, and many other things.

Having been to that corner area twice with Brian, it's also the place where you will find a thriving industrial/goth kultur. That the female denizens of said kultur are nearly all way attractive is a plus, to be sure.

Cute goth girls... do they have machine guns? Because then instead of rowr they'd be ROWR!

Dan Perry, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You'd have to ask them. Alternately, you could be the supplier.

I'm living in U-district I think. Anything hip goin on in that part of town? or how far is it from this beltown?

Brock K, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

U-district's great. Tons of affordable veggie friendly foods of all types, second hand music stores, colorful... Affordable place to live, though sometimes pretty rusty. Kinda loud off "the Ave" (University Wy.. the main drag in the U-district) and sometimes annoying.. but hey, we're talking students and stoners here.

"The Ave" is pretty analogous to Telegraph Ave in Berkeley... except, according to Kris, the kids here are less ugly. Also, The Ave is a little bigger. You have a lot for really big & tall ex-Canadian teen girls with reverse pink mohawks that wear black leather jackets with Crass patches who end up being about as punk as Blink 182. And lots of little speed twinkies and salty sailor beggars.

Not really a main artery for hip musical acts, though there's the great all ages venue The Paradox, where many a hardcore/indie show takes place. theparadox.org if you want to investigate.

All parts of Seattle are quite busable. I know of a few that go between the U-district and Belltown.. Otherwise, maybe it's a 15 minute drive, figuring in traffic and parking spot searches?

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, for those that came, fun was had. Jef left this town happy. :D

I went ahead and transcribed and scanned the playlist for that night.
You can see the actual playlist scan HEEEERRRREEEEE!!! (I'm disappointed that I didn't get drunk enough to render this playlist completely illegible as it went on.. in fact, it's quite legible all the way through.. what the fuck!)

But I also transcribed it below for those of you not patient enough to load four semi-biggish jpgs, if you have a slow connection that is.
Here's the little icon definitions:

And here we go:

There. Come again soon!

Looks like a fun night -- what's that cover of "Funkytown" sound like?

Mark, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Quite silly and caustic. World Domination Enterprises are sadly overlooked when it comes to "pigfucker" music nostalgia, as are Terminal Cheesecake. But it's from their record "Let's Play Domination" from 1988... Cop Shoot Cop kinda copped their style, essentially, and made it more serious.
