I could go on forever. But could someone explain why they like "Captain Jack" to me? I could never stand that one.
Incidentally, the 2-disco best of is one of the best best ofs ever.
― Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)
Honorable mentions go to "Vienna," "I Go to Extremes," "Leave a Tender Moment," "Moving Out," "An Innocent Man."
Count me in the club of those who cannot stand "Schlock from an Italian Restaurant." And I'm surprised by all the affection for "Uptown Girl" and "Tell Her About It."
When I tried to think about this, it was interesting how many thematic and stylistic pairs there are. "You May Be Right" and "My Life." "Just the Way You Are" and "She's Always a Woman" (Though I prefer "She's Got a Way" to both those). "Allentown" and "Downeaster Alexa."
― The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)
Can't remember which single had the violent "I got blisters on my blisters!" ending, either "You May Be Right" or "Sometimes A Fantasy". That might've made the list, but only with that ending (which wasn't on any album, just the '45).

Grew up listening to Billy Joel - my Dad was a big fan. I still think 52nd street's a pretty good album and an interesting Italian American take on the disco era.

#10 was the tough one. 1-9 seem pretty solid, but #10 is pretty much interchangable with any of the honorable mentions, which are Stiletto, Leave A Tender Moment Alone, Honesty and Only The Good Die Young.

"Movin' Out" has vastly grown on me over the past year. It's gotta be in there.

In particularly "Moving Out" and "She's Always A Woman"
Piano Man and Goodnight Saigon are great.
― chap, Thursday, 24 April 2008 12:02 (seventeen years ago)
"Movin' Out" is such a good album opener. Just drop the needle and hear everything kick in.
("Big Shot" as well, though I'm not sure about the breaking glass or toot-toot sounds that open the next two studio albums.)
― Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 24 April 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

The correct answer is of course "'Ullo John Gotta New Motor?" viz. "He's got a record by Billy Joel/He's got a record by Billy Joel."
Possible runner-up: that Pitman track which cites Billy Joel and samples Julio Iglesias.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 24 April 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)
I only recently discovered that he actually included an Attila track ("Amplifier Fire"!) on his '05 career-retrospective box - a peculiar move, considering his oft-proclaimed embarrassment over that whole album. (No coincidence, I'm sure, that "Amplifier Fire" is one of the album's two instrumentals.)
