Let's see if I can do this...

1. "The Stranger"
2. "Allentown"
3. "Pressure" (more for the video than anything else)
4. "Big Shot"
5....

That's all i got. And I could very easily and happily live without those.

Aw, fuck. Stick "Close to the Borderline" in there as #10.5

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

Heh heh. A few months ago 'Glass Houses' was playing in a bar where I was on a date. I said something about how it was great but went way downhill on the second side. When those songs played, I ended up eating my words.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Uptown Girl
Tell Her About It
My Life
Don't Ask Me Why
The Longest Time
It's Still Rock and Roll To Me
Allentown
Piano Man
Only The Good Die Young
Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)

I like all of these songs quite a bit, no irony. Major childhood nostalgia.

hmmm, this thread puts paid to the "billy joel v. elton john" argument, since i'm hard pressed to come up with five (much less TEN) billy joel songs, while i can easily list 20 elton john songs:

anyway ...

1. don't ask me why
2. allentown
3. captain jack
4. piano man (god help me)
5. scenes from an italian restaurant

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

John Fredland (jfredland), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Words cannot express how much I cannot stand "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant". It's like a vast, sickly wedding cake filled with sour milk and iced with a fly-attracting patina of fresh vomit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Should I be so surprised that everyone has picked "Allentown"?

Allentown
Uptown Girl
Just the Way You Are
She's Always a Woman
It's Still Rock and Roll to Me
An Innocent Man
The Longest Time
Piano Man
I Go to Extremes
Only the Good Die Young

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

1. Piano Man
2. Tell Her About It (great video too)
3. Uptown Girl
4. Pressure
5. The Longest Time
6. We Didn't Start the Fire
7. My Life
8. A Matter of Trust
9. Running on Ice
10. Keeping the Faith

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

I was gonna make one but I think it would be almost identical to Matthew's.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Another entry circulating around the same songs, mostly:

1. Leave a Tender Moment Alone
2. Pressure
3. Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)
4. Allentown
5. She's Right on Time
6. The Stranger
7. Honesty
8. It's Still Rock 'n' Roll to Me
9. Summer, Highland Falls
10. A Matter of Trust

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

1. Scenes From an Italian Restaurant
2. Only the Good Die Young
3. Pressure
4. It's Still Rock 'n' Roll to Me
5. Say Goodbye to Hollywood
6. Uptown Girl
7. Piano Man
8. We Didn't Start the Fire
9. You May Right
10. She's Only a Woman to Me

I could go on forever. But could someone explain why they like "Captain Jack" to me? I could never stand that one.

Incidentally, the 2-disco best of is one of the best best ofs ever.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

1. She's Got a Way
2. New York State of Mind
3. A Matter of Trust
4. Don't Ask Me Why
5. Pressure
6. The Stranger
7. My Life
8. Honesty
9. Downeaster Alexa (so as not to say Allentown)
10. Big Shot

Honorable mentions go to "Vienna," "I Go to Extremes," "Leave a Tender Moment," "Moving Out," "An Innocent Man."

Count me in the club of those who cannot stand "Schlock from an Italian Restaurant." And I'm surprised by all the affection for "Uptown Girl" and "Tell Her About It."

When I tried to think about this, it was interesting how many thematic and stylistic pairs there are. "You May Be Right" and "My Life." "Just the Way You Are" and "She's Always a Woman" (Though I prefer "She's Got a Way" to both those). "Allentown" and "Downeaster Alexa."

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

1.ATTILA! (particularly "Wonder Woman" and "Amplifier Fire/March of the Huns"
2."Uptown Girl"
3."She's Always A Woman"
4."Big Shot"
5."The Entertainer"
6."Don't Ask Me Why"
7."Allentown"
8."Piano Man"
9."Only The Good Die Young"
10."The Longest Time"

Can't remember which single had the violent "I got blisters on my blisters!" ending, either "You May Be Right" or "Sometimes A Fantasy". That might've made the list, but only with that ending (which wasn't on any album, just the '45).

"Allentown". One of the first "proper" pop songs I learned the sheet music for, and more of an influence on my keyboard playing than I can properly describe.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

How come everyone likes Atilla better than The Hassles?

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 12 May 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

Hahahahaha! I just opened this thread forgetting I'd started it, thinking: "Number One: 'Scandinavian Skies.'"

Oh, how we laffed . . .

Goodnight Saigon

Don't Ask Me Why

Sleeping With The Television On

Grew up listening to Billy Joel - my Dad was a big fan. I still think 52nd street's a pretty good album and an interesting Italian American take on the disco era.

Err, Piano Man!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 12 May 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

It took me a lot longer than it should have (longer than you think) to finally get this together..

01 Allentown
02 Don't Ask Me Why
03 Laura
04 Summer Highland Falls
05 Sometimes A Fantasy
06 She's Got A Way
07 The Night Is Still Young
08 Everybody Loves You Now
09 The Stranger
10 Close To The Borderline / Los Angelenos

#10 was the tough one. 1-9 seem pretty solid, but #10 is pretty much interchangable with any of the honorable mentions, which are Stiletto, Leave A Tender Moment Alone, Honesty and Only The Good Die Young.

LOL

one year passes...

"Movin' Out" has vastly grown on me over the past year. It's gotta be in there.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 24 April 2008 11:36 (seventeen years ago)

Truest thread title ever.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 24 April 2008 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

Billy Joel is my favourite offensive musician.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 24 April 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

In particularly "Moving Out" and "She's Always A Woman"

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 24 April 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

Piano Man and Goodnight Saigon are great.

chap, Thursday, 24 April 2008 12:02 (seventeen years ago)

"Movin' Out" is such a good album opener. Just drop the needle and hear everything kick in.

("Big Shot" as well, though I'm not sure about the breaking glass or toot-toot sounds that open the next two studio albums.)

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 24 April 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

thread should be retitled Billy Joel the Ten Plagues

gabbneb, Thursday, 24 April 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

All of you Yankees who hate Billy Joel fascinate me.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 24 April 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

gabbneb otm, the man is a menace to society

Mr. Que, Thursday, 24 April 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

The correct answer is of course "'Ullo John Gotta New Motor?" viz. "He's got a record by Billy Joel/He's got a record by Billy Joel."

Possible runner-up: that Pitman track which cites Billy Joel and samples Julio Iglesias.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 24 April 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

I only recently discovered that he actually included an Attila track ("Amplifier Fire"!) on his '05 career-retrospective box - a peculiar move, considering his oft-proclaimed embarrassment over that whole album. (No coincidence, I'm sure, that "Amplifier Fire" is one of the album's two instrumentals.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

1. Piano Man
2. Captain Jack
3. Allentown
4. Uptown Girl
5. The Longest Time
6. An Innocent Man
7. My Life
8. Big Shot
9. She's Only a Woman to Me
10. Movin' Out

Come on, no matter how much you hate Billy Joel, these songs are classics. Helluva lotta fun to sing out loud to.

Poliopolice, Friday, 20 January 2012 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

I'm gonna revise my list, now that I've had 6 years to think about it some more

Captain Jack
Only The Good Die Young
You May Be Right
Goodnight Saigon (AS SHARP AS KNIVES-IVES-IVES-IVES)
My Life
Big Shot
Uptown Girl
The Longest Time
Movin Out
Piano Man

The whole Greatest Hits 1&2 album reminds me of playing lego as a kid, lol.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 20 January 2012 22:15 (fourteen years ago)

“Los angelinos” is one of the worst songs of all time

calstars, Saturday, 20 July 2024 00:40 (one year ago)

I did not like that one. Really disliked Homesty too.
