Teenage Fanclub Man-Made (C/D)

Anyone else heard it yet?

Off a couple of listens I'm not sure, it doesn't have the immediacy of their other albums, but it does seem more varied.
It benefits from having Jim O'Rourke producing and sounds more grown up(?) than they ever have - But I'm not sure I want the Fanclub to sound like that.

I'm a huge fan of them, and I must admit to being Slightly disapointed, but hoping that'll change given more time spent with it

I like "Slow Fade" (?). Sounds like old-skool Fanclub. But there was one real howler on there, think it's a Gerry song, lots of bits that don't sit particularly well together. But hey, I'll buy it. It's the Fannies and I love 'em.

Actually, it was John McEntire that produced the album, not Mr. O'Rourke.

"Falling Leaves" is a wonderful song, though I wish they'd rocked it out on that one.

Apologies, John McEntire is correct
God only knows why I thought it was Jim O'Rourke

OTM with the grown up comment. I'm pretty impressed with it so far. There are some lulls, but it's far better than Howdy! out of the gate.

I was secretly hoping for a return to the multi-tracked guitars and vocals of Songs From Northern Britain, but this will do just fine.

grown up(?)

Damnit, they're TEENAGE Fanclub, not GROWNUP Fanclub.

Hearing "Time Stops" off the album got my hopes up. Is the rest of the album much different?

"Time Stops" is ok. The other track I heard ("Born Under A Good Sign") totally kicked my ass.

one month passes...
What's that one that goes "I'm alive and I'm alone / I love this life"?

i wish francis macdonald would release the second nice man cd already.

ALba, that's "Nowhere". Saw them in Bristol two days after the album came out and Norman couldn't remember the words for "Nowhere" and just made up goobledegook and gurned. The album is very good, a lot better than "Howdy", and Raymond's songs are all sublime, especially "Only with you".

one of the most underrated albums of 2005.

"Cells" is brilliant, one of my favourite songs from 2005. Still need to listen to the rest of the album some more though as it didn't strike me as being anything special.

the AMG described the record as if stereolab are doing "america"'s songs.
i would go more for "the byrds" (not america), but either way john mcentire did a great job with those melodies.
it might be possible they tried to gain success and change like wilco tried to do, hiring jim orourke to produce them:
both 70's influenced bands, getting a chicago post rock producer.
wilco got the success and change in style, teenage fanclub didnt, cause they werent as ground-breaking.but the record is good anyway.

2 reasons: the melody of course, and the restrained, krautrock style production of john mcentire here.

I wish all the record was that good, but it isn't.

three years pass...

I find myself returning to this album more often than to their others these days (excepting Bandwagonesque, my first love). The production is nicely varied, which most of their records can’t boast. Underrated, IMO.
