Going for Piano Concerto #23 here. #21 (the one from "Elvira Madigan") may be more famous, but for me, nothing beats the wonderful minor key second movement of #23.

I listen to Symphony No 40 a lot (this morning in fact) but I really don't know enough. I'll check that out.

Bassoon Concerto (Largo), but as a former bassoonist, I'm biased.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I think I've never heard a bassoon concerto. I'll look for that too. I guess I've mostly just heard WAM's orchestral stuff.

requiem

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

What are good performances of the concertos?

the fucker that will burn you (sundar), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

For correctness' sake, the second movement of the Bassoon Concerto is Andante Ma Adagio, not Largo. My mistake.

I have a feeling I'll change my mind 4749 times on this thread. I too love the Requiem, and the Minuetto of EKNachtmusik, and ...

Sundar, I've heard a bit of Mozart's small ensemble work (years ago, from performances in high school) and it's also stellar. I wish I could remember which exact pieces they were, but fuck, you can't really go wrong with Mozart.

Sundar: Murray Perahia and ECO for piano concertos.
None better.

everybody loves a requiem

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

"March of the Priests" from The Magic Flute. Less is more.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

"Ave Verum"

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 7 April 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

I think I could sing the choral bass part to the entire Requiem right now from memory.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Mozart, Mozart...he's that painter guy who cut off his ear, right?

Hmmm...I know I like the Requiem. And some of those piano concertos (the popular ones), but don't know which ones. Which is just as well, because no matter which ones I choose, some better-informed ILMer will scoff at my choice & say "So-and-so is 100X better than whatever", exposing my ignorance for all to see. And I can't let that happen!

such a dull title though

niels, Monday, 17 September 2018 06:41 (seven years ago)

23 is beautiful but it's no 24, not being facetious - 24 is my fave Mozart piano concerto 4life!

calzino, Monday, 17 September 2018 08:39 (seven years ago)

Hard to say (duh). Possibly the 5th Violin Concerto. Or Don Giovanni. Or the 4th String Quintet.

pomenitul, Monday, 17 September 2018 08:42 (seven years ago)

piano concerto no 23 holds a place in my heart for being my gateway into classical, via a knackered looking old tape in the 80's. But probably something I've sort of played out, but then one day it might take me by surprise again.

calzino, Monday, 17 September 2018 08:56 (seven years ago)

Xpost is that string quintet K515? If so, awesome choice

I was thinking of the K. 516, in G minor.

pomenitul, Monday, 17 September 2018 11:56 (seven years ago)
