Artists that should cover full albums

I don't know why Petra Haden is covering The Who Sell Out, but I'm curious to hear what it'd turn out like.

Me, I think Sleater-Kinney should have a go at Germ-Free Adolescents. That would work pretty well, even without the sax.

I heard a bit of the Petra Haden a while back on Do or DIY (1/14/2004) on WFMU. It is about 18 minutes in. It is good!

I think Lightning Bolt should cover all of Magma's Attahk with like uhhhh Weasel Walter and guests playing the other instruments.

Townshend told Entertainment Weekly that he thinks she should do 'The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society' next.

Elvis Costello should do "Jailbreak", Thin Lizzy.

"The boys are back in town" you can hear it now, can't you?

Oasis covering the entire "Revolver" might be interesting to hear.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 7 April 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

That "Revolver" one would of course also have to include "Rain" as a bonus track of sorts:

When the sooooon shyiyaiyns!

The Fall covering The Monks' "Black Monk Time"

Marcel Verhoeven (Marcel Verhoeven), Thursday, 7 April 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

They've done three so far, so they have a head start...

Pere Ubu covering Richard Thompson's 'Rumour and Sigh'

Clawhammer covered Q:Are We Not Men?.. in its entirety, I believe.....to no great effect.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that Clawhammer album was shit. No question.

Loads of punk bands have covered entire Ramones albums.

Ben Dot (1977), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I don't think any artists should do this. It strikes me as pointless.

i'm not sure how good it would actually be, but Yo La Tengo ought to do John Cale's Paris 1919. The two songs they've already covered from it (andalucia and hanky panky nohow) are so good, I've often wondered what the whole record would sound like by them.

in a similar vein cale should probably cover a late-period leonard cohen album, seeing as how his "hallelujah" is definitive. and yes, i've heard the jeff buckley rendition.

tylerw, Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I had no idea that Jeff Buckley rendition was a cover. not so odd, I guess, considering that was the only song of his I really liked.

Covering songs I understand, but why cover a whole album? It seems kind of gimmicky, overly literal, quintessentially rockist, and also vaguely creepy in a stalkerish kind of way.

ashlee and jessica simpson do Heart's Dreamboat Annie

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Electric Six do "Licensed To Ill". It could work, if they're given totally free-reign on it.

I still want to hear Pussy Galore's version of Exile on Main St. I think Henry Kaiser should put together a hot band and cover Double Nickels on the Dime.

Curious George (1/6 Scale Model) (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

I'd love to hear Coil cover the entirety of Queen's A Night at the Opera.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

If Killdozer were still around they could improve "Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants" quite substantially.

I don't think any artists should do this. It strikes me as pointless.

It strikes me as a fun idea... but yeah, weighed against other things they could spend their time on, maybe not so practical. That doesn't mean it's not fun to discuss though!
