Hi!

I'm trying to do a little research here. How many asian-american artists can you think of? It's enough that one of their parents have an asian background.

Thanks!

Isn't there someone Asian American in Xiu Xiu? Maybe not. And does an Asian American play with Bright Eyes perhaps?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

There was a comp - "Ear of the Dragon" (?) - organised by a bunch of such bands about a decade ago... Seam and Versus, etc...

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Okay, the participants on said AsAm project were apparently:

aMiniature, Dambuilders, Yanti Arifin, Chumley, Versus, Mint Audrey, Venus Cures All, J Church, Seam, Azure, Dolomite, Slowpoke, Kicking Giant, Skankin' Pickle, Team Xiaoping, Squash Blossom, Cub, David Pajo Band, Cartographers

Hehe, so how many of these indie types are still active currently, besides Dave Pajo?

Joe Bataan
Susie Ibarra
Fred Ho

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Er, I don't think they are actually Americans.
According to allmusic they are Japanese-born "expatriates" living in NYC since 1993 and 1987 respectively, so take that as you will. I don't know the status of their citizenship or whatever.

I was going to say (Mutsumi Kanamori from) Mu, but I think she's British.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Now wait a second is Punjabi MC even British?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

He is british btw. Born in Coventry.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Rachel Yamagata.
Emm Gryner is Canadian, but she ought to count (see below).
Shakira is Lebanese-Colombian. That technically qualifies as Asian-American as far as I'm concerned.
John Woo (The Magnetic Fields' banjo player).
Jenny Choi (Sanawon).
The last time I saw Muddy Waters, the lead guitarist in his backup band (and a very good one, too) had a Japanese name and appearance. Of course, I don't remember his name.

And if you are looking at classical musicians like Yo Yo Ma . . . there are dozens and dozens of big names.

Vornado (Vornado), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

And Kid Koala IS from Canada.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Utada Hikaru is Japanese, not Japanese-American. Also not American, though not yet mentioned, is session bassist Phil Chen, who is Jamaican.

Maki Takahashi from Blonde Redhead may count; don't know if she actually emigrated.
Coco Lee, despite being better known in Hong Kong, is a California girl.

Boo-Yaa Tribe were Samoan-American.
Tia Carrera, who did make an album for Warners in addition to the Wayne's World movies.
Bassist John Myung from Dream Theatre.
Blues guitarist Tim Kaihatsu, who played with Robert Cray and was likely the guy Vornado saw with Muddy Waters.
Most of the R&B/fusion group Hiroshima.
DJ Q-Bert also, I think.

J.D. Considine, Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 7 April 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)
