Hip-Hop has its roots firmly planted in it and it shows every so often, but for the most part it seems to have moved away from that to either crunk club music or experimental backpack stuff. It seems like house music a la Tortured Soul, Kaskade, the Defected label, etc. is the only genre where new funky and soulful songs are being made on a large and consistent basis. I think 2-step had it, but that seemed to have phased out pretty quickly.
Will there ever be a resurgence in funk/soul that doesn't have a 130 BPM 4/4 beat, like there have been for so many other genres of music, or is soulful danceable stuff pretty much a thing of the past?

New D'Angelo album coming soon. "
Good God, it's about time. Him, Erykah Badu, and Jill Scott should form a triumvirate of real R&B. With their powers combined, they could train an legion of Soul Soldiers and take out the Man, aka Sir Nose d'Void of Funk.

Erykah Badu (the singer with the magic pu$$y that turns regular rappers like Common into tye-dyed metrosexuals) is a little too hippyish/coffee-table for my unsophisticated tastes.

D'Angelo has been on H? Hmm, this either means this album will either be awesome, good, mediocre, or shit. As for Badu, it's great for a night of intimate scrumpin.
What's weird is if I look the type of shows/events that go on around here in Philly in comparison to its soul history, I would have little reason to believe that I live in Philly. Maybe I haven't been looking in the right places.

While it is unfortunate that he felt so much pressure to be "That Guy from the 'Untitle'" video all the time on the Voodoo tour, he's not the first person to feel the pressure to be "That Guy". Al Green still wrassles with the dichotomous nature of his music - is it secular or spiritual? Which master do I serve? While D's wrasslin' is a little different, I think that its the same type of thing...if you're willing to put all of your being into something (that's why its called soul music), you're gonna feel some pain and stress b/c of it. Soul singers don't age well for a reason.
I just hope that he gets over what appears to be a need to take his musicality away from physicality (something that is next to impossible, especially with HIS music) and comes into his own zone of comfort with who he is as an artist while still exploring things.
And, if you're looking for soul music, there's nothing wrong with re-visiting Stax Studios. Damnit if they weren't THICK!

Good point, and I think that he has in the past...but that's a TOTALLY different gig than being THE MAN in front, which the Voodoo-related exposure caused. I think, ultimately, he wants the audience to hear his music, and to be a vehicle for it, not be made a star by performing his music.

Really, that says it all, doesn't it? That said, I thought Erykah Badu's performance on Chappelle was outstanding. Jill Scott and D'Angelo do nothing for me.

I actually knew about MIA. Common/Jaguar Right/Keyshia Cole/Kidz in the Hall is coming here on April 22, so that looks promising. I guess part of it is that I've been looking for DJs who spin soulful stuff because that's really what I like to go out and dance to. Dancing at shows doesn't really work so well. Would you happen to know of any good places to boogie or of a good comprehensive shows listing?
