foetus - LOVE

anyone else heard this ?

on first spin i am a lot more happy than with Flow/Gash (both of which had great tracks amongst the excess)

.. at last Jim has discovered that sometimes less is more ..

i always enjoyed it when jim pulled back and let his words and atmospherics lead the way .. and thankfully he has stripped his sound down.

dont get me wrong there are till areas of full on foetus style bombast

.. but with the minimal electronica throb of 'thrush' which mutates into a massive orchestraal epic - featuring jennifer charles/elysium fields - is this the first foetus track to feature co-vocals ? then you just know he has rediscovered his love for the sonic detail is back on course.

best album since THAW ?

very possibly.

i would like to know why he has deviated from the trademark japanese red/black/white covers of old for the EP (not adam)

.. the lp is typical foetus art .. but the coverart for EP is not - in fact its very dated

http://foetus.org/discog/notadam.jpg

shame.

otherwise its excellent.

I thought that was an odd title for Arthur to pick...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

.. but a great one for Jim.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

is this the first foetus track to feature co-vocals ?

Well, he did do that cover of "Don't Fear the Reaper" with Lydia Lunch, which was basically a duet.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

ah ha .. i forgot that one. ta for the reminder ..

- but that was a single.

i suspect that this is the first time for an album track then ?

whch BTW .. is rather mighty fine - poss the best track on the album.

OMG I had no idea this was coming out!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, has it really been fifteen years since I've given a crap about Foetus? Wow, how time flies.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I've got the ep. I think it's the best Foetus project thing he's done since....fuck.......Ramrod, maybe? A long time anyway. He's trying different vocal stylings which is a relief. The old gothic growling juxtaposed with demonic yelping is a bit too adolescent for me these days. However, Jim is one of those artists I can never totally give up on, although for years I've prefered his side projects - perhaps he has more freedom to be innovative and eclectic when released from the Foetus brand. Actually this thread has made me want to get the album a.s.a.p. actaully.

everything, Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

see .. i haven't ventured into his side projects .. i was never into Steroid Maximus and i have never seen the new stuff in shops as they were only availabke from shows/website etc .. so its Foetus al the way ..

but yes .. its good to hear him mess around .. and in the track Aladdin Reverse i am sure he is having a pop at Elton John ..

stil trying to figure out exactly what he s referring to .. he mentions him by name ..

great fun though ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

yeah, he's at his best when he's having fun. Albums like Flow and Gash make me miss the playfulness of of Hole, Finely Honed Machine etc. I think he lost a lot of that round about Nail. Now he's maybe getting mellower or perhaps some more creative collaborators have brought that back. In the late 80's/90's he collaborated with a lots of really over-serious types: Lydia Lunch, Roli Whatsisname, the guy from The The etc.

everything, Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

he needs to lighten up and find a new pop band to fuck around with a la EMF

!

i would love to know more about how all that came about .. he did loads of stuff for them .. was it al about money .. or did he like their music .. the mind boggles.

i remember listening to hole/nail/Thaw and laughing out loud at some of the wordplay ..

dont recall having the same experience with flow/gash .. but the excessive bombastic noise kinda pushed me away so i never ..

this new one though has some definite foetus fun ..

needs more time to get his flow ..

oh .. and DVD freebie includes all sorts of good stuff but i didn't get that ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

I've sometimes fantasised about dream projects or artists that I wish Jim had worked with. Madonna, Primal Scream, Mansun, Queen, Tricky, Tindersticks, Oliver Stone/Ken Russell/Dario Argento movies etc. The list is endless. I can't belive he has not had some spectacular offers in the past - I guess he must turn them all down.

everything, Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

my own personal collab dream .. has always been a ON-U Sound vs Foetus collaboration ..

not sure about it being good in 2005 . but in 1987 this was uttermost in my wishlist .. they were both in the same areas from time to time .. (Ministry being an obvious connection point)

i do suspect though that his persona has prevented a lot of big names getting into bed with him.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, most of my wishlist made way more sense over ten years ago. eg. how about Public Enemy? Also, I think he could have saved the Age of Chance's bacon if he'd done their second album and they had gone down that path instead of whatever the fuck they thought they were doing. In fact that makes me think of a Foetus/Tom Jones collaboration. God, THAT would be worth hearing.

It used to bug me that Trent Reznor got involved with so many things that Jim Thirwell could have done 100 times better, especially since I viewed a lot of the Nine Inch Nails stuff as being an incredibly flat (early) Foetus ripoff job.

Foetus/Tom Jones collaboration. God, THAT would be worth hearing.

INSPIRED!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

you are luring me in re AOC aren't you ?

(i run their website/mailing lists etc)

but i totally agree !

though there as no way that the record label would have allowed it ..

and spot on re Tom Jones .. whoa.

"Fuck that Art of Noise shit and sing STUMBO Tom" ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

AoC's "Hold On" is probably the finest Foetus song recorded by someone else.

everything, Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

just found this :

firewater get namedropped in alex ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

They're big pals, Tod and JG.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Tod played bass on a few tracks on.....was it Gash? I get them all confused. In any case, it was the one with "Mortgage" and "Mighty Whitey".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

so, i haven't bought a foetus record (apart from a garage monsters 10") since whatever the album after 'nail' was that has left no impression on me whatsoever. so, honestly, have i missed anything wonderful?

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

I'd honestly have to say Naaaaaah. From what I've heard of this new album, I'd say that if you were curious this might be the one to get. That Garage Monsters stuff is cool, though.

everything, Friday, 8 April 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

foetus started off washed up and hasn't gotten any better

Niggers Gone Wild (Niggers Gone Wild), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

right.

i thought this idea re Foetus vs AOC was to good to let go

.. so i checked up on this with Geoff T from the band .. here's his response :

"
Aoc were never really part of all that Noize thing proper. For one thing, all the Arsequake groups were plimsol/combat-jacket-wearing White-Boy with guitar-Worshippers....the LAST thing that was welcome in that scene was hip-hop, which of course Aoc chanpioned. Our Avante-Noise heroes (Glen Branca/Early Sonic Youth etc) were also balanced by the likes of prince/Jam & Lewis etc. In my eyes, at the time, that dichotomy alone made Aoc more Avante than any of the other bands out there.
LP2 with Foetus at the controls does sound like it would've been good though! Plus, it's got me thinking...we could've done it without a vocalist....
"

i have to say an instrumental version of Mecca with lots of Foetus extras would be lovely ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 8 April 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday I had a vague thought about a 15 year old fantasy collaboration and today there's a dude from the band commenting on it......the internet is finally blowing my mind!

everything, Friday, 8 April 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

ha !

now you know why when you mentioned AOC i thought you were winding me up ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

I've got to admit, I'm impressed. It's always been a regret that I never saw them live. I got into them about a week after they played what might have been their only Glasgow gig. I didn't go because the song on C86 didn't impress me much. My friend saw them and reccommended them to me. Later I found out that "From Now On This Will Be Your God" is one of their least catchy songs. I still play "1000 Years.." all the time, still amazed that it didn't take off like a rocket. Leeds was really happening back then, for about a year or two.

everything, Friday, 8 April 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

they weren't really part of the C86 thing ..

and likewise re 1000 years. it still gets a regular blast in 2005 round my way. i never exected it to be massive .. twas too abrasive .. but i am somewhat biased.

and yes i had a riot in leeds - i cant deny.

but - that was then ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 8 April 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

This hasn't been officially released yet has it? As the resident Foetus psycho-completist, I would have to wear a hairshirt for a week if I missed it. I'm guessing I should start trolling the used CD sections for an advance copy, huh?

On the vocal collaboration front, some of the nine inch nail remixes have some overdubbed Foetus vocals, although that doesn't really count as a colab, I guess.

I like everything he's done, but I would send up a warning flag that no-one really NEEDS york. Because it kind of sucks...

In the ultra-bizarre end of things, he's also been comissioned to write a piece for the Kronos Quartet, which firmly establishes them as the coolest fucking string quartet ever.

Well I'm in the same boat, except that I also had the Wiseblood album. I think that was a collab with someone from Swans? And I LOVED that record, boy did it rock.

moley, Saturday, 9 April 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Wiseblood was a collab with Roli Mosimann of the Swans. Great record, sadly OOP the last I checked.

John Justen (johnjusten), Saturday, 9 April 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

no its not out keep the hairshirt at bay .. May 9th is delivery date

.. i pestered the right people and hit jackpot ..

three weeks pass...
Listening to this now. My Foetus experience is next to none (I picked up Sink for a dollar many years ago and didn't enjoy it at all), but I'm engrossed in this one. Has he been doing this more orchestrated stuff in recent years, or is Love something of a departure?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 1 May 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

the return of the orchestral excess on LOVE is going back to the glory days of NAIL .. recent albums (GASH/FLOW) had touches but always swamped out by the bombastic ..

i definitely prefer the orchestral style.

Check out the new video for "Blessed Evening," directed by Karen O, with help from Spike Jonze. Pretty awesome and creepy.

I'm loving this album too.

two years pass...

so has anyone here picked up the Love remix album, Vein yet ?

I eventually picked up the proper edition of Love with the DVD and can vouch for its worthiness, some interview (with a hint as to a proper Foetus film/DVD to be released !)and live clips.
But I've not yet succumbed to the lure of Vein, especially as I'm still digesting the excellent Damp compilation, which I would suggest is actually better in some places than Love, eg. the stripped back electro-throb of Blessed Evening (Phylr Remix)
