Any news?

jj, Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Didn't one of them, y'know, die?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

so, WERE Weapons, then.

(sorry)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

ouch

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

guitar player type died from a heroin overdose after serving time for armed robbery. The main two dudes live on, apparently.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

damn ouch is right

jj, Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

I think that one was the one that dated chloe s.

jj, Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

i saw them a few weeks back, at lit. i've seen them like 10 times over a period of like seven, eight(?) some odd years. usually its by accident.
you know, they WERE the hot thing around here for a while, pre-sept. 11th. they have a solid social rep as people, and an attendant scapegoat status, music scenewise. if that makes any sense.
both are accurate i think, and just one of the more strangely banal metagroups anywhere to ever get a fair amount of attention. their premise artistically is ultra-rickety, but that has been the case with them for *so* long now that it's almost amazing at this point. cosmetically, they are sub-thrash now if anyone was wondering. mixed in with a little weird al/AWK.

noizem duke (noize duke), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't the guy that passed away previously in Clikitat Ikatowi?

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

i raise my glass to Army of Ghosts and Ayler's Angels. And "Don't Be Scared," which is a killer, KILLER song.

all that said, i don't think i'll buy a new album by them if there is one

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Their album is still great; their lives shows (that I've seen) are horrible. Not really sure what this means: "they have a solid social rep as people," but then again the main thing I know about them as people are that they seem too damn lazy to entertain an audience, and their microphone conked Tricia Romano over the head once. (I got the idea they had a real *sleazy* rep, but I kinda ignore that stuff.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Everything about this band is terrible.

cdwill, Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

ARE WEAPONS >>>>> JAPANTHERS

David Svensson (deangulberry), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

The A.R.E. Weapons show I saw many many years ago (before they had a record out, must have been four years ago or so) wasn't bad, in fact I thought it was rad- but it was *very* mannered. As Four were hanging out at the front positioning and shining different lights on Brain and the other two (Ryan and, was it Thomas? I forget). They were very "Suicide"-channelling. The show was too crowded and got shut down by cops.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 8 April 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Perfect!

Schwip Schwap (schwip schwap), Friday, 8 April 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

They rock
got caught up in the hype machine
backlash from hell because of the tag electroclash
caught shit for having an influence of suicide

Killer album though
bad news bears and warriors mix into one
samples, guitar, tude and white boys on mpcs

Saw them live it was great. People threw bottles and walked out.
they rocked a cover of "summer in the city" was the best

hmuni, Friday, 8 April 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the show I saw was at an art gallery opening in Chelsea on West 22nd Street- I think The Centuries also played. It was a fun show, super packed. People sure resent the shit out of this band.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 8 April 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Why is that? Weird. I am not tuned in to NYC scene bizness so what do I know, but I love that record. I would've got it a lot sooner had there not been massive ILM hate for them.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

as someone from the other side of the world from NYC (well, almost), I adore "Don't Be Scared", "N.Y. Muscle" & "Hey World", & the rest of the album's pretty superb. It'll be a shame if they don't release anything else. "Bumps" by Secret Weapons was pretty k-rad, too.

etc, Friday, 8 April 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

If you're going to resent an electroclash band, shouldn't it be WIT?

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 8 April 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I think resentment has now turned to pity, largely.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 8 April 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

They put out a CDR of new material just a few months ago: "The Wasteland Tapes Vol. 1"

I listened to Chain Gang recently for the first time in a long time and noticed a lot of similarities...

Russell (Russell), Saturday, 9 April 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

These guys remind me of Flipper, actually..

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard "Saigon Disco." I think I have a remix. Whatever. I like it enough that I want to listen to it occasionally.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Sunday, 10 April 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

they submitted their new album to DFA. They have been dropped by rough trade. it sounds kind of the same, but not quite as good, and I defend their first album a lot. if NO ONE knew who they were and that album dropped people would be all over that stuff. Ex member Thomas Bullock of Rub N Tug remains a good friend though. He spun at our party the other night at Downtime....

GALKIN (GALKIN), Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

RUss did you go see Chain Gang at CBs?

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

i thought that on the RT album they messed up 'black mercedes.' compare the version on the rough trade one to the one on the self-titled "demo" album. where are the hijinx? where were they, generally? they went all New Sincerity. a post-AWK swerve. and i hate that aesthetic, personally. they were better off in limos drinking from goblets etc. and who cares about teenagers, really? besides Oprah?
i wonder does that early one go for anything on ebay BTW?

noizem duke (noize duke), Monday, 11 April 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

jg we need to talk

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 11 April 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I love the Rough Trade disc. "Don't Be Scared" and "Hey World" were 2 of my fave singles from that year. I picked up "The Wasteland Tapes," which I haven't given a fair listen to yet. Is that their new album? I thought it might be just demos or old tracks or something. The fidelity was lacking on first spin. I got the CD-R at Other Music.

Waking Up Onstage at Jumbo's (Bent Over at the Arclight), Monday, 11 April 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

I would like to hear that new stuff. "Tude and white boys on mpcs"... this remind me that one of their tracks had a detuned crash cymbal, the kind of thing that you try with the preset sound bank of a sampler you've just bought and you think "wow it's cool" for five minutes but after that you outgrow it, and they got away with it. I liked that.

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Monday, 11 April 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

i semi-regret selling the ARE weapons disc.

latebloomer: strawman knockdowner (latebloomer), Monday, 11 April 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

i just put on an mp3 of NKOTB "hangin' tough" and was thinking how ARE Weapons maybe were greatly by this single. sounds very similr.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 16 April 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
Listening to it right now. Free In The Streets is the title.

Seems less "electroclash" than the first one (from what I remember anyway).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

They've gone "mature!"

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

They've gone "good."

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I can't imagine who would buy this though.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

it's not bad but it's disappointing. this coming from someone who LOVED the first record and the eps. "who rules the wasteland?" and "in the night" are pretty great tho.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Disappointing, huh? That's how I felt when people were talking about the first record and the eps. The new one is more satisfying, to me at least.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

hmmmmn. has it leaked? I'd just ordered the secret weapons 12", ha.

etc, Monday, 18 July 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

samples, guitar, tude and white boys on mpcs

= Color Me Badd makes their Big Rock Move.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
What a dreary, humorless fucking album - and I say this as somebody who absolutely loved their first one. WEll, maybe "Push 'Em Back" and "In the Night" aren't completely awful, I dunno. But still...I don't even think I want to know what drugs this boring load of crap can be blamed on.

xhuxk, Monday, 8 August 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

(Probably the same drugs that inspire that useless live shows, come to think of it.)

xhuxk, Monday, 8 August 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

awww, no! um . . . what were yr favourite tracks off the first album, & did you hear that secret weapons 12"?

etc, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

I am listening to these guys now and trying to figure out why I thought I liked them...?
