I dig 'em... for generic 90's rock, they're damned good, and their new album was pretty enjoyable... opinions?

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Buy it all. they rock. maybe. i would buy it all if i saw it all for a dollar. i like their studio/stadium rock sound.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Indefensible shit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

I really like "Gel" and "December."

I can't fucking stand "Shine."

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Horrible badness.

I once liked this girl and I had to attend a Collective Soul show with her and her new BOYFRIEND. That sucked in so many ways.

Aaron A., Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

>>I once liked this girl and I had to attend a Collective Soul show with her and her new BOYFRIEND.

What are you, a HOMO?????

megdelilly, Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

were you hoping for a three-way?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

I probably wouldn't hate them so much if I hadn't have to listen to their stupid songs over and over in the 90's. But, since I did, I basically can't stand them, or their fans. Possibly, the most irritating band ever! And their name: "Collective Soul" ARRRGHHHH!!!

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

I liked "Why, pt. 2"

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

I just realized this is one of the few '90s bands I have no interest in hearing a hits comp of.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

You should have posted like 10 of those, mrjosh.

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe anyone actually likes them or listens to them, even nowadays...mainly because I've never known of anyone who enjoyed them (nor have I ever heard of anyone that liked them before).

they pretty much suck...and the dude kinda looked like the nickleback dude's older bro.

I wish I could say the same (about not knowing people who liked CS).

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

I think I would like a judiciously-chosen best-of, but the one of theirs I saw was missing a few songs that were quite good.

"Shine" is horrible though. Even the Dolly Parton version is bad!

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Dolly Parton covered Collective Soul?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Yes, she did. Nickel Creek did the backing. An earnest vocal performance, and it sounds lovely, but the song is just dead and hollow even in her hands. She looked a bit ridiculous in the video for it too.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

wow. who'da thunk it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

i do, i really dig that hermetically-sealed sound they get on the guitars. it's Bostonian.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

She really should have covered "Gel" instead! Uh-huh Uh-huh Uh-huh!

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Or maybe "Run", that was quite good, too.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I always wanted to go to one of their shows just to heckle them. They were the only band that infuriated me that much and I'm not sure why.

Gregory T (tubesocks), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

I HATED "Shine," but I can stand some of the stuff on "Dosage," which my friends back in college, oddly enough at Uconn, used to play all the time. Nothing was distinctive enough for me to remember it by name.

Jimmy_tango, Friday, 8 April 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

"Shine" had to have been the most played song on the radio during the entire 90s. I think it was played even more than "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "I Want It That Way."

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Shine is ALWAYS on, still... in Connecticut we get it on 102.1, 99.1, 105.9, 96.5 at least once a week when i'm in the car (which isn't very often, so i have to imagine that gets shitloads of play)

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

i never listen to the radio, so i never hear them. i'm curious, but i don't want to lose my hipster police badge. when will it be cool to listen them ironically? two, three years?

indian joe, Friday, 8 April 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Fucking CT - COLLECTIVE SOUL HAD MORE THAN ONE SONG YOU BONGLICKERS.

Indian Joe: don't follow the trend - START the trend.

I bought whatever album that has that 'December' song on it when I was in 8th grade from one of those BMG music 7 CDs for a penny deals. I generally keep all the albums I buy because a collection's a collection. So now I have a Collective Soul album. And it makes me sad.

Wookie Rookie, Friday, 8 April 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

In 1997, I was working as a waiter at First Avenue, the Minneapolis nightclub, when Collective Soul played. It was an all-ages show, and I was serving drinks upstairs. Actually, what I mean is that I was serving cheap beer to quarter-tipping fuckers upstairs. Anyway, the place was full and the band was playing. I'd always thought "Shine" was the worst single of the decade up to that point--obviously, I had yet to hear "Virtual Insanity"--and was having a bad time all around. So far, so whatever.

Then they played "Shine." It came about 2/3 into the set, was greeted enthusiastically, yadda yadda yadda. Then they revved into the pre-chorus, down-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh, and then THE ENTIRE FUCKING AUDIENCE DOWNSTAIRS WENT "yuh!" AT ONCE. Every single one of them. I was carrying a full tray of PBRs and I nearly dropped it. It was horrible and yet magnificent at the same time.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 8 April 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

obviously, I had yet to hear "Virtual Insanity"

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

I really like "Gel" and "December."
I can't fucking stand "Shine."

"I like the way Mr. Snrub thinks!" Agree 100% with that assessment.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 8 April 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

Matos, that's brilliant...

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Friday, 8 April 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

seven years pass...

"December" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 10 May 2012 14:32 (thirteen years ago)

Also, this band drove a guy to murder a couple years back
