There's a Mutek VIA rail discount this year! About time!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 8 April 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

are you serious?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 8 April 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

astroblaster (astroblaster), Friday, 8 April 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki -- yes.

They also offer hotel discounts, but they've been doing that for a few years now.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 8 April 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

"they" = the "official" hotels of Mutek, not VIA rail, obv.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 8 April 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

since i live here it doesn't really make a difference, unless i can somehow plan a trip somewhere in canada just BEFORE mutek & catch a cheap fare home!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

i will be there.

i thought they did the rail discounts every year.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 8 April 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I know it's French spelling of "Canada", but somehow this is the first time I've seen it, so I just need to repeat it over and over in my head for some reason.

(Which also reminds me of the story where I pointed out that Adanac Blvd. in Vancouver is "Canada" spelled backwards, and all my grew-up-in-Canada-all-their-life friends were stunned, and never realized what "Adanac" meant. Then I was stunned in response to their being stunned. And then they got stoned.)

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 14 April 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

So NYC gets mini-Mutek, whilst London gets a taste of Sonar

New trend: 1 night spin offs

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 14 April 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

I am v. excited about mini-Mutek

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 14 April 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
anyone else go to mini-mutek last night? i thought deadbeat was fantastic, i wish i'd heard his whole set instead of skipping out midway through to hear vincent lemieux (who i thought was sorta boring). i was hoping akufen would be playing live but it was a DJ set ... still awesome though, nice and clicky. (even though i was completely beat by that point.)

rajeev (rajeev), Monday, 9 May 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

i forgot to go which sucks because akufen and vincent are both so cute!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 9 May 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

i was there. when was deadbeat on? i was actually a bit disappointed by akufen. it all seemed kinda samey, and not quite as exciting as i wanted. the peaks were not very high, i guess. not that it was terrible -- i dance dance danced right up in front (this being new york, that was the only place people were dancing). but i think i'm not feeling his brand of microhouse anymore.

W i l l (common_person), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

who is going to montreal? i am on the beat!

Nick Sylvester, Monday, 9 May 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

deadbeat was on at 12:15 downstairs. yeah, akufen did seem a bit samey ... enjoyably so, but i agree it didn't really go anywhere. (enough so that i actually left during his set and didn't feel like i was cheating myself.)

i wish crackhaus had been on between deadbeat and akufen, instead of at the same time as akufen. the timings were a little weird.

rajeev (rajeev), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah i left before he finished, too. i was downstairs when deadbeat was on, then, but only for 15-20 minutes because it was disgusting down there. what i heard sounded good but i couldn't begin to find room to dance. in my experience, subtonic fun is indirectly related to the number of people there. which makes sense when you think about that space.

W i l l (common_person), Monday, 9 May 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

re: subtonic, totally. the bunker parties are always painful until 2 AM or so when only the people who are there to dance are left. when i saw the lineup, i was thinking/hoping they'd put deadbeat, crackhaus and akufen in a row upstairs. ah well.

rajeev (rajeev), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

how was Heartthrob?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

if heartthrob was on btwn vincent lemieux and akufen (and i think he was), i dug his set. less minimal than lemieux, and more interesting IMO. i feel like i have heard him out before, i dunno though.

rajeev (rajeev), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
ROLL CALL!

so i will be there, and not only because i live in mtl. as it turns out i have been contracted to interview, on video, EVERY SINGLE ARTIST playing at mutek this year. whew!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 May 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

whoa, nice! for whom?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 27 May 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Totally Tuesday blog I bet!

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Saturday, 28 May 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

i'll be there!

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 28 May 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

i won't be there this year (contrary to what i said above) :/

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 28 May 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

I can't make it either :( :( There are too many things on my mind and on my plate right now.

Congrats on your assignment, s1ocki!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 28 May 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

it's for some crazy website. i have to learn as much as i can about the technical side of producing electronic music in 48 hours.

so uh guys, what are you doing for the next 48 hours?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 28 May 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

anyone else coming?

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 29 May 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

so what are people excited about seeing? i have a pass for everything so i want to check out as much as i can.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

If I was going ... :( :( ....

Pomassl. I love me the abstract noise.
Klimek vs Tim Hecker. This one kind of speaks for itself.
Bas van Koolwijk. His set with Radboud Mens in 2002 was my favourite of the festival that year.
Monolake. Nice and reliable.
Biosphere. There was a great article on Biosphere in Grooves a few months ago that made me feel bad for not having heard anything he's done for many years.
Sense Club. Will certainly be the biggest dance-fest of the festival.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

i am sitting in the "press room" of a boutique hotel, waiting to interview anybody who walks by.

Don't tell me you can't recognize the likes of MONOLAKE and BIOSPHERE when you see them!!!

Monkey of the SOUTH, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

mutek musicians basically look like the borg, right?

I am teh jealous.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

hey dude, i'm getting into technical stuff in the interviews so if there's anything you wanna know just tell me & i'll ask!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Sure, ask Tim Hecker which heavy metal samples he's been using lately. I know he's used Van Halen and Billy Idol in the past, so ask him which riffs have been inspiring him these days.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

haha sure. tim's interview should be fun, he's gonna goof on me for sure.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 June 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

i interviewed 22 more artists today!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 June 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

jealous ... still ... yes ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 4 June 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

not that i had any time to actually listen to any music or anything!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 June 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

i saw geeta for 5 seconds!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 June 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

also as far as interviewing goes, villalobos is still our WHITE WHALE!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 June 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

50 interviews in 3 days! SO TIRED

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 June 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

no villalobos though :(

but akufen was super-sweet and cool!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 June 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

like a delicious popsicle.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 June 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

there's gotta be a better way to say that

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 4 June 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

oooh boy.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 June 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

can you tell i'm tired and hot?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 June 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

villalobos "missed his flight" again last night (app 3rd time he's done this to mutek), so it was luciano and adam hart. i mean, i think. i fell asleep at the club.

get ready for all the "sense club? more like nonsense club!" riffs

oh and fucking never again will i complain about drink prices in nyc, btw. holy fucking f, montreal's got this *machine* that measures out a shot, it's like a bottle top condom or something (with a whole in it obv). anyway it was like 6 $ for a sip of vodka.

finally, montreal has the best party shirts i've ever seen. i saw a shirt with ten buttons just on the collar. i saw another shirt that had a lot of paint on it, but i think that guy was actually a painter so i'm hesitant to bring him into the fold here.

xoxo, NBS

Nick Sylvester, Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

things are fun otherwise

Nick Sylvester, Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

nick you fell asleep! jesus. fuck a villalobos; luciano's solo set was angry and intense (anyone who says laptop music can't be live would have been proven wrong last night), his 30-minutes-in power failure made it feel like a curse was hanging over the evening, and his final comeback totally triumphant for a room full of people wanting very, very badly to dance. in ricardo's place, atom heart and original hamster did an impromptu (ok, they rehearsed for an hour) live set on 808 and 303 and i-don't-know-what-else and laptop that went from minimal drum trax to acid to "acid-ton," aka acid techno reggaeton. mental. and finally, galopperiende zuversicht blew everyone away, even though they only played from 1 tili 3 or so, and had initially said that the ideal slot in which to hear their music was beginning at 5 or 6 or 7 a.m., and going for three hours. i can only imagine what that would be like.

off to le piknik.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

montreal's got this *machine* that measures out a shot, it's like a bottle top condom or something (with a whole in it obv).

Lots of clubs and bars have these now (in Canada, anyhow). Mixed drinks and liqueurs at places like Metropolis are always obscenely expensive, but remember, the exchange rate is still in your favour!

xpost

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah, and go anywhere besides the mutek-sanctioned venues & you'll find drinks a LOT cheaper. a LOT LOT LOT.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

also villalobos crapped out on a mtl gig as recently as like 4 months ago.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

villalobos "missed his flight" again last night (app 3rd time he's done this to mutek)

Really? This must have happened with some of the micro-Muteks, because he's always been there for the main events. Strange.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

i interviewed the head of mutek chile and he told me villalobos was a huge star in his native country, like practically a national treasure! he goes "my grandmother knows all about villalobos!"

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

i would doublecheck that

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

i don't have his grandmother's email address.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 5 June 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

piknik electronik was awesome! people dancing outside, in a giant calder sculpture, to luciano...what a dream. his dj set was off the hook. and stephen beaupre's live outdoor set was the bees' knees too.

geeta, Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

also: philip OTM

geeta, Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

damn, sorry i missed it. i was completely dead today.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

"off the hook"? "the bee's knees"??

strng hlkngtn, Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

that's how french people talk.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

philip your (atom) heart's bigger ha. i actually liked jonson's and luciano's live sets a lot, but they were better listens than dances i thought (esp luciano's).

Nick Sylvester, Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

hi jess! it's the heatstroke talking!

tonight should be...interesting...

geeta, Monday, 6 June 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

i am psyched.

geeta, Monday, 6 June 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

everyone get home ok?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

I want to know more about the party shirts!

From Zero To Drunk In Twenty Dollars (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

i wore the same shirt for like five days in a row! is that what you mean by party shirt?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Was it art?

If so, yes.

From Zero To Drunk In Twenty Dollars (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

did anyone pick up one of those cute multicolour FM3 music boxes? i got a green one!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm curious - does anyone know why exactly Villalobos missed his flight?

Phil made some suggestive Libertines references. Has he got some kind of problem?

Mika, Saturday, 11 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

how was melchior?

re villalobos: it's probably none of your business.

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 11 June 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

re villalobos: it's probably none of your business.

Probably not, no. Just with the ketamin stories and odd hinting/rumours circulating, you know. I ask more as a fan than a gossip columnist. But maybe ain't the sort of thing for a messageboard anyway.

Mika, Saturday, 11 June 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

how was melchior?

Fantastic. Weird hypnotic grooves in the beloved Perlon style with deviations into disco-house debauchery.

re villalobos: it's probably none of your business.

If an artist of RV's stature flakes 2 years in a row, festival attendees deserve an explanation.

Blightersrock (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 11 June 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

If an artist of RV's stature flakes 2 years in a row, festival attendees deserve an explanation.

Flakes is probably the operative word.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 11 June 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

regarding villalobos, the ketamine stuff was the first thing that popped into my mind when i heard about him cancelling

don't wanna sound too morbid or anything

manuel (manuel), Saturday, 11 June 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

seems like ketamine is a cop-out. have drugs become so awful/hippie?

natedey (ndeyoung), Saturday, 11 June 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

villalobos is widely rumored to have a drug problem, yes. flaking on mutek - who's done more to promote him in north america than anyone - and on luciano strikes many, i think, as a sign that things have probably gotten out of control. (after all, these people, the mutek staffers, luciano, et al, are his friends - it's not like he just skipped out on some random club gig.) more than anything, i suspect most people hope that he finds a way to get things back in control. but who knows, maybe he just had a bad hangover, or maybe he really did lose his passport.

noyb (philip sherburne), Saturday, 11 June 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)
