"BRING BACK GRUNGE"

Apparently bumper stickers can be sold that display this wondrous phrase in big black letters.

"Disco Sucks" 2005 has arrived, motherfuckers.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

..except in this case, it's "Bling And Bimbos Suck"

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

hyper-nostalgia has now officially confounded me. I thought we were around the 79-84ish era. Before we get to grunge we must go through a bunch of shitty baroque pop and butt rock first, have patience people.

jmeister (jmeister), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

um, how does a positive statement become a negative one in your view, donut?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

oh wait i thot the link was just to a bumpersticker. but still, one could have that bumpersticker and not necessarily be anti-bling, right?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

I guess... although I think that intersection would be small. I think the implication is to "BRING BACK" something to replace what's currently there, which is a more subtle negative... which is really dumb, given that Scott Stapp and Nickelback haven't exactly gone away yet... and Nu-metal is still thriving, although it's becoming slightly more detached from its Alice In Chains/Soundgarden worship than before.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 8 April 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

But I'll admit the thread title is total hyperbole (as almost any thread I start on ILX these days is.)

OTM (except possibly the "slightly detached" bit)! This is totally a "disco sucks" deal. These guys can have a digital download of "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" shoved up their ass.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 April 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

I mean are they just pissed that rap stations EXIST?

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 April 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

For the record, just because someone misses the heady days of Grunge (be that the legimate stuff like Mudhoney or bandwagoneers like Stone Temple Pilots), that doesn't mean that they're closet Klansmen. STOP TREATING ROCK FANS LIKE HOLOCAUST DENIERS!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

EIGHT WAY SANTA bumper stickers would be cooler.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 8 April 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

You are overreacting a tad.

It is? WHO HERE IS THIRSTY? I'm A-BUYIN'!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

If they replaced these stickers with "BRING BACK MY YOUTH" and "BRING BACK THE ERA I MISSED WHERE I THINK I WOULD HAVE FIT IN" (dependin') that would be cool.

BRING BACK SENSITIVE DUDE-ROCK THAT WASN'T EMO!

Also, please stop having all those girls as equals in your band. The rule is only one, and she has to play bass badly, dude. The Ladybug Transistor are following this rule--why aren't you?

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 8 April 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Have we gotten to that place already?

BRING BACK D'ARCY

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Uh, you realize that's a further interpretation of the bumper sticker, right?

And riot grrl never went away, at least not in Brooklyn...

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

where are these bands who have women as equal partners? If anything grunge was more woman-friendly than rawk or rap cuz you could at least be the bassist rather than the frontgrinder. and in indie they have to be nutters or play piccolo.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

eppy, i was totally kidding. riot grrrl, whatever!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

BRING BACK THE OLD WEILAND

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

which is really dumb, given that Scott Stapp and Nickelback haven't exactly gone away yet... and Nu-metal is still thriving, although it's becoming slightly more detached from its Alice In Chains/Soundgarden worship than before
Well, db, to a nose-stuck-up-in-the-air grunge fan, Scott Stapp and Nickelback are the ones who desperately need replacing.
Equating Stapp/Nickelback to Grunge is like a jazzbo saying:
"given that Kenny G hasn't exactly gone away yet... and Muzak is still thriving..."
Stapp/Nickelback is to Grunge what Y&T is to Muddy Waters.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

*cough* Sorry, still not awake.

If you averaged out all the local bands I've seen lately and weighted for prominence and instrumental focus, a term I've just invented to help my case, I think it would skew about 60-40 boys-girls, which seems to be a lot better than it was 10 years ago. Also, there are a lot more mixed-gender bands, which can be a good or a bad or a neutral thing. This is all anecdotal, you understand.

I think you don't really notice the non-nutters female band members because, well, they don't play any differently than dudes, really.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

BRING BACK DANTE HICKS

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh I notice, dude! I totally stare at the girls in bands if they're up there.

you gave "the game" an8.3 and bright eyes an 8.7, and fuckin' bloc
party an 8.9. and gave bug a 7.3? i understand you did not rate the
other albums in all likelihood, but i mean c'mon where's the
consistency.
the wrost song on bug is better than any song on those records. and
bug influenced the entire decade of the 90s, where as all these bands
are the victim of overdone influence. its really ridiculous to give
bug a 7.3. also although they had yet to pull it all together the
first record deserves better than a 6.2
what are you 21 and got into indie rock 3 years ago? sebadoh was "the
band" along w/ pavement, and maybe GBV. steven malkus is a jerk, and
the jicks suck. do yourself a favor and buy bakesale and sebadoh III
tomorrow.

BRING BACK EMPIRE RECORDS

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Better Than Ezra new single is at radio now! The 90s are totally back!

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

BTE, really? That's something to look forward to.

Looking at the charts right now, though, you could really be forgiven for thinking it was 1994. Nine Inch Nails and Weezer both have singles in the top 40, Beck has the #2 album in the country, Audioslave is #1 on the rock charts and Green Day has been in the top ten albums and singles for months now. It's bizarre but sort of wonderful.

BRING BACK THE TAMPON TOSS

AMEN!!!!!!!!!! Holy shit, I could shed tears.

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 8 April 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

The single's pretty good, actually. Dunno if it'll go anywhere, but...

I'm up to my ass in pretty good 90s acts still workin' their thing. Jill Sobule, Lisa Loeb, Poe...actually, the last Jill Sobule album was good, too.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 8 April 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

"Disco Sucks" 2005 has arrived, motherfuckers.

Sounds more like trying to get rid of hair metal for the second time.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 8 April 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Thank God I didn't throw out my plaid shirts.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 8 April 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

bring back grunge.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 8 April 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Don't bring back the 90s. Bring back the 80s or 60s instead

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 8 April 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

By the way, is there a hip hop equivalent to this - a vocal movement to "get rid of bling / fuck crunk / bring back the Ghetto CNN" etc?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 8 April 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

bring back the 20s

cos then i wouldnt have to worry about my credit card bill or my cell phone. i could just listen to jazz or irving berlin or something and drink bathtub gin.
