r (that's very minimal for richie hawtin)

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 8 April 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Heh. That mug is cool. The episodes are pretty lame, though

W i l l (common_person), Friday, 8 April 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

It has it moments, but I agree the contents don't live up to the idea.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 8 April 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

That article it links to, though-- yeah.

W i l l (common_person), Friday, 8 April 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

"It has it moments, but I agree the contents don't live up to the idea."

I suspect it's very minimalness is part of the joke.

Semi-related : ever see Weird Emma? http://www.weirdemma.com/

phil jones (interstar), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I love that people are now capping on the hipster cliché of "let's move to berlin"- so many people I run into keep muttering this. I mean, hell yeah, I see why, cheap rent, lots of fun to be had, it's not mystery. But still, this feels well deserved.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

BRING BACK TOM ROLLS

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 8 April 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Where the hell are the hipsters who are all like "let's move to berlin?" This just shows me that I know absolutely no hipsters, because that sounds like a complete monetary impossibility for 90% of the people I know, and the other 10% are locked into office jobs. Damn the midwest.

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

raver raver raver
i made you out of clay
hipster hipster hipster
decades later you shall play

Yejoon (Yejoon), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

mike, they're all in New York, or at least all the ones I meet are. at least a few years ago, living in berlin was like 10% of the cost of living in brooklyn, so it's far from a financial impossibility for people ( or at least it was) -- people I know who've moved there just DJ a few nights a month to pay their rent and expenses, or put on some rock shows, or whatever. very garden of eden, which means of course...it's probably all gone, ha ha.

but really, what do I know, I live in Boston now and have never been a hipster.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, people are paying $200.00 a month rent in Berlin for warehouses that would be $2500-3500 a month in San Francisco- people are going to Berlin not because they're flush with cash but because it's cheap as shit. It's also crawling with ridiculously sexy and fashionable people- I mean the Alter Ego show I played at in Berlin was like some kind of Nuremberg techno rally as stocked by modelling agencies, it was retarded.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 8 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

One of the saddest moments in my life was the moment I realized I could not live in a warehouse. Apparently I am narrow-minded about shelter.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 8 April 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I think one of those t-shirts would make me feel better, though.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 8 April 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

this is kinda funny! magda is playing in chicago tonite at smart bar, by the way. anyone going?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 8 April 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Well, what's the reality of salaries in US dollars over in Berlin, or Germany in general? Like tech salaries for instance? I heard they were ranked highest in unemployment in Europe at least a year or so ago. I'm not sure if that's the case anymore... how good are the UI benefits and other nationally provided care given the cost of living? etc. "$200 a month" may end up seeming like a larger (or smaller(!!)) amount of money if you evaluate the standard-of-living factors.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 8 April 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Thanks guys but lets face it I wasnt trying to write War and Peace it was just stuff that I threw down in a matter of minutes. No drafts no planning - I'll try and do better next time
LOL

Eddie (eddiea1), Saturday, 9 April 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

can you actually buy the mugs, eddie?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 9 April 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Now I know it's a hipster cliche I'm a get a job in berlin. That's the best time to go, be a new jack to the old jacks, and an old jack to the late-arriving hotties.

Jacob (Jacob), Saturday, 9 April 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

You make a good case, Jacob.

The mug appears to be on sale at cafepress. For $15. No.

W i l l (common_person), Saturday, 9 April 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

joseph (joseph), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I wish this would get turned into a Young Ones-style tv program.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Richie's lines are even funnier if read in the voice of Dr. Evil.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

jesus "english" humour. I read "coolest place on earth after Peckham and Bournemouth" and decided not to read the rest.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 10 April 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

i thought the title of this thread as "the animal house backlash starts here," and all i could think was, "OK. if you say so."

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 10 April 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)
