Artists/Bands You Go Back To Again and Again

Not all the time, mind you, but ones you go back to every so often — and then when you do, you just can't get enough. For me, it's Tim Buckley every year or so — something very hypnotic and kind of timeless in the sense that I lose track of time. A bit less with T. Rex, but when I do hit them up (as I am now) it's intense. The Beach Boys and Dylan every two years — and that's more of an intellectual thing. Bacharach, too.

david bowie. foetus. on-u sound.

The Stranglers. I go through periodic phases without ever listening to them, then return to them and listen almost exclusively to them. `Tis odd.

Tim Buckley always works, as does Gene Clark, Talk Talk, Judee Sill, Arthur Russell, Miles, Sly, John Fahey, Can, and on.

Wouldn't this basically be a list of favourite acts?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 8 April 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Teenage Fanclub
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
Les Rallizes Denudes
Howlin' Wolf
The Smiths
Otis Redding

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 8 April 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

Chic
Byrds
Wayne Shorter
Faron Young
George Jones
Beach Boys
Small Faces
James Brown
Johnnie Taylor
Chris Kenner
Loretta Lynn
The Stones
The Mekons
Gram Parsons
all are acts I basically don't get tired of, find fascinating always. In general, when I'm feeling low, I listen to New Orleans r&b and rock and roll, it's so good-humored and so basically sane about the human condition.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Saturday, 9 April 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

The Fall
Sun Ra
George Jones
13th Floor Elevators
Bowie
Public Enemy

It could be. But other acts who I would count among my favorites are hard to listen to repeatedly. Failing to think of any now, however...

David Bowie, Queen, and occasionally My Bloody Valentine

Aja (aja), Saturday, 9 April 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

Bowie, My Bloody Valentine, Air, Bjork, Pulp, but Pulp's cycles are very short, i forget about them a couple of months and then i get back to their albums, happens very frequently.

Nirvana, can't listen to a whole album anymore.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Saturday, 9 April 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I can, but it's been a long time, well not too long. I mean I did three weeks ago, but before that, I don't know, umm maybe five months.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 9 April 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Wait, no. It had to be about seven months.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 9 April 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Dylan and the Beasties.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Mary Chain, Banshees, Stereolab, Saint Etienne.

What with the Banshees recent top quality box set, Stereolab's imminent collection, and another impending Etienne LP, the hits keep coming.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Roxy Music
Bo Diddley
New Orleans r&b

Burr (Burr), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

PJ Harvey. I hadn't listened to Rid of Me and 4 Track Demos in years, it seemed, and I got them back out & they're now on constant repeat. Palace is probably due for a review soon, I've had those albums stored too long.. And Bowie, of course, because I'm at a different phase of my life than when I first heard them, and Low and Station to Station now sound like totally new albums...

Rammstein! Yes, I always go back to them. Well, actually, I never leave them.

And Badfinger and Magazine.

And the first New Order, Roy Orbison and, um, Robin Trower for unknowable reasons.

Ian in Brooklyn, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Cabaret Voltaire. Not one of my faves by any stretch, but damn if I don't keep coming back for more.
