Hard for me to do because I find it hard to objectively rank favorite bands cross genre. but I'll try...

Immolation

Death metal, but this act is one where, upon releasing a new album, I'm buying it on day one.

They have a very unique style, they aren't about balls to the wall riffing, but they create a very bleak atmosphere by creatively using dissonance, odd harmonics, and layers.

Certainly, they've stuck to their niche their entire career, but why not if you're good at it?

Pain of Salvation

The second act coulda been really one of 234, but this group has always managed to write music that is both challenging, emotionally engaging, and memorable at the same time.

Unfortunately, listening to The Perfect Element too much has burnt me out almost permanently on the album.

This is too hard for me to decide (I could do 5), so I'll go by my top two artists on Last.fm, both of which would be in my top 5:

Roxy Music
Chakra

Devo and Throwing Muses.

But The Go-Betweens or The B-52's might replace one of them depending on when you ask.
