I mentioned this about Bon Scott on the AC/DC
The Family Jewels 2-DVD set.. and how it reminded me of Steve Priest of Sweet doing the same during their Top Of The Pops performances in the very early 70s.
I'm sure Mick Jagger or David Bowie or Marc Bolan did something similar in their even earlier appearances, but I can't remember, off-hand, any moment from these latter three that was as "rooooowwrrr" as Steve Priest during "Wig Wam Bam", "Blockbuster", or "Ballroom Blitz", who was always the one in the band during live shows that basically took Sweet's already glammy-as-fuck reputation one step further. (Priest dressed as a Nazi transvestite on one TV appearance/performance/lip-sync of "Blockbuster", and mimed the "We just haven't got a clue WHAT TO DO!" lines, but I forget which show it was.)
And then, Pete Burns would take it even further with the now classic "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record Baby)" video in 1985... the eye-widening thing was what MADE the video pretty much... well OK, aside from the hair, the eye patch, and his little fist-to-hip pendulum dance.

Wendy O must have done it at some point... she didn't do it on SCTV.. although she and her band, instead, invoked Satan and destroyed the Fisherman's Lodge in total anarchy afterwards...

check out Louis Jordan's soundies, for a start--only Louis was often doing it for comic effect more than "check out my ROOOOWWWWR!"
