Awesome. While I'm waiting for it to download, what's your take? And how is the Dennis Hopper track?

Telephonething, Saturday, 9 April 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

I've yet to listen to it. Going to listen to it tonight.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 9 April 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Thank you, I needed this.

Im on track 4 now. "Intro" is the same bit of music that plays as the current web site's intro music. "Last Living Souls" sounds fantastic on the first listen. Like the singles, it sounds like a bit of a mish mash of seperate songs. The third track is incomplete and cuts off after 19 seconds. Track 9 seems to be missing entirely.

jason., Saturday, 9 April 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

So best. Thanks for YSI'ing it.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 9 April 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

Thanks- the album (and the all-important Hopper spoken-word track) are just as good as I'd hoped.

Telephonething, Saturday, 9 April 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

DARE = future single of the year candidate.

Seriously, this record is like "Modern Life is Rubbish" to the debut's "Leisure" in terms of quality.

jason., Saturday, 9 April 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

I heard Hopper got in a fight w ryan pfork.

with cherry on top.

brilliant young and angsty (thatguy), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Unless the sadly truncated "Kids With Guns" is really phenomenal, "O Green World" is the best song here by a long shot. Not to impugn the rest of the record, which is far better than it had any right to be. I'm actually kind of disappointed by Doom's rapping for once; he did much better on the Daedelus album a month or so ago.

Telephonething, Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I thought "O Green World" was one of the weaker ones. Seemed a little under-developed on first listen. Its growing on me anyways. Personal favorites right now are probably "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead," "DARE," and the last 2 tracks. Like I said, huge improvement over the debut, which was like 2/3s filler.

Can someone ysi the Doom track? Mine didn't come with it.

NiftyGuy, Monday, 11 April 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

so does this have the full version of "kids with guns" or just the crappy 20 seconds?

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Monday, 11 April 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

er... Blurillaz!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 11 April 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

The hights of this record aren't as high, nothing quite as good as 19/2001, 5/4, or Clint Eastwood. But it's much more consistant than the last record. I'm hoping Kids with Guns will be great and 5/4-ish. Has anyone got that full song? Want to gmail it?

Getting to hear a better quality version of Dirty Harry has made the pisspoor quality of the rap a lot more obvious.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 11 April 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Plus-Tech Whiz Kid (Disco) (Barima), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

I like the idea of Gorillaz switching producers every time, and becoming Damon's producer subsidy project.

Gorillaz had to have raked in a lot of cash for the automator, and I bet this one will do the same for Dangermouse.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Is Damon really the head honcho in all this? Even the songs that don't have his vocals?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 18 April 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

so this is like 'the fall' then.
first track is quite lovely.
the second, is a demo track that does little for me.

mark e, Thursday, 31 May 2018 20:40 (seven years ago)

also, the whole 'Murdoch not on this album' thing.
who cares now re the whole 'story' re the band now ?

ppl who follow the story will think this is fun, people who don't will have no idea about it. idg the objection?

fair enough.
I was told earlier by one of the bands inner circle I was being overly cynical during a chat re the albums details.
so you are not alone sic in telling me off.

mark e, Thursday, 31 May 2018 21:24 (seven years ago)

Are the 'band' actually ageing?

No guests on this one or very few, so more like The Fall (the free Christmas Day 2010 Damon-on-his-iPad album, not as in '..plus your granny on bongos').

piscesx, Thursday, 31 May 2018 21:31 (seven years ago)

Humility is nice enough, probably the best thing Albarn has done since Plastic Beach

Are the 'band' actually ageing?

Yes, Noodle is a tall girl now.

Mark G, Friday, 1 June 2018 10:29 (seven years ago)

I thought Murdoc was showing his age by balding, but apparently, he's still in jail and the balding green dude is his replacement, Ace, a former Powerpuff girls villan. http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/gorillaz-recruit-powerpuff-girls-character-watch-their-new-video-starring-jack-black

BrianB, Friday, 1 June 2018 12:34 (seven years ago)

I do kind of like the idea of Murdoc being replaced by another pre-existing cartoon character. It's like when John Frusciante was replaced with Dave Navarro.

The new LP isn't all that bad. It's nowhere near the level of Demon Days, but at least Albarn's presence is more noticeable on this one! 'Tranz' is my favourite Gorillaz track in ages.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 2 July 2018 20:36 (seven years ago)

This has the most repeat play value since Demon Days for me by a long shot (admittedly that wouldn't take very much), only a few days in. Loads of top notch Albarn on here

Gorillaz - Strange Timez ft. Robert Smith (Episode Six):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbA5p54Rw2M

Bee OK, Thursday, 10 September 2020 03:32 (five years ago)

ILM doesn’t talk much about Gorillaz. They frequently misuse collaborators but I’m very interested in some of the guests in this one. Elton John + 6lack in the same track sounds ridiculous but I love that combo. I think the Goldlink + UMO and JPEG + Chai tracks might be good but cautious as to why they got sent to the Deluxe / bonus tracks version of the album.

Full tracklist:
1.) "Strange Timez" (featuring Robert Smith)
2.) "The Valley of the Pagans" (featuring Beck)
3.) "The Lost Chord" (featuring Leee John)
4.) "PAC-MAN" (featuring ScHoolboy Q)
5.) "Chalk Tablet Towers" (featuring St. Vincent)
6.) "The Pink Phantom" (featuring Elton John & 6LACK)
7.) "Aries" (featuring Peter Hook & Georgia)
8.) "Friday 13th" (featuring Octavian)
9.) "Dead Butterflies" (featuring Kano & Rosani Arias)
10.) "Désolé [Extended Version]" (featuring Fatoumata Diawara)
11.) "Momentary Bliss" (featuring slowthai & SLAVES)

Deluxe Edition Bonus Tracks:
12.) "Opium" (featuring EARTHGANG)
13.) "Simplicity" (featuring Joan As Police Woman)
14.) "Severed Head" (featuring Goldlink & Unknown Mortal Orchestra)
15.) "With Love to An Ex" (featuring Moonchild Sanelly)
16.) "MLS" (featuring JPEGMAFIA & CHAI)
17.) "How Far?" (featuring Tony Allen & Skepta)

surprised that this seems to be getting a fairly positive response after the last few records were pretty dire

ufo, Friday, 23 October 2020 06:28 (five years ago)

yeah this is actually pretty good. it's nothing spectacular but much much better than their last few and the most i've enjoyed any albarn project in a long long time, probably since demon days? i agree with moka that the guests feel integrated into the whole much better than usual.

Damon weirdly amicable on this interview too, almost every interview I’ve seen of him he looks like he’s hungover and would rather be anywhere else.

Really surprised by how much I like this new one, I dig the melancholy vibe through most of it. That last one had higher peaks, but this might be my favorite front to back Gorillaz since Plastic Beach (which I guess isn't saying much considering how blah I've found most of them to be).
