I am *right* about the Divine Styler's Spiral Walls Containing Autumns of Light being One of the Best Albums Nobody's Ever Heard, RIGHT I tell you!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hip-hop sounds best first thing in the morning.

tyler, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

indie and mainstream hiphop are both horrid and boring these days equally.

jess, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best hip hop being made today, er, isn't really hip hop. (BoC, P73, etc.)

Dan I., Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its not rap.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The KRS-One style of spelling it is "Hiphop", always capitalized, no space.

Honda, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

might as well bring this up here - is anyone else sick of the "don't call it rap, call it HIP HOP" thing? seems like at some point a few years ago - if I had to pick a particular moment, it would be '98, circa Lauryn Hill's TIME cover - there was just this massive cultural movement to make everyone see the distinction between "hip hop culture" and mere rapping. which is fine, i guess, in fact, I probably did it to some extent for a couple years before then. But since then it's become this obnoxious PC thing. At this point, I'm content just thumbing my nose at the whole thing and declare in my most nasal twang possible "Yes, I like that Rap Music".

and if i hear KRS say "rap is something you do, hip hop is something you LIVE" or whatever one more time, i'm going to fucki

al, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know what you mean, Al, I use hip-hop b/c it includes instrumental music, too, but there is something weird surrounding that terminology.

Mark, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'rap' is a faulty term, i only use it around pharcyde fans.

ethan, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best hip hop being made today, er, isn't really hip hop. (BoC, P73, etc.)

FINALLY someone else agrees with me that BoC has a strong hip-hop overtone! Personally, I thought that one of the best hip-hop tracks I heard last year was Radiohead's "Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors".

Dan Perry, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Josh Kortbein made some interesting observations on his blog when he compared BoC to P73, wondering why the latter gets classified as "hop- hop" more often. Listen to Music Has The Right... right now and thinking about what he said -- I had forgotten how hip-hop these beats sound, more than I remembered (hadn't listened in a few months.)

Mark, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, I always thought of the BoC beats as hip-hop beats too.

Contrary to popular belief, hip-hop with gay musical-theater choruses is the best thing ever and there should be more of it. It should be, like, its own subgenre.

Ian, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also I think Mark just invented a good genre name. Hop-hop!

Ian, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ian you need to hear boogieman's 'just you wait'.

ethan, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone remember that "Hip Hap Hop can you tell me..." It's stuck in my head now.

helenfordsdale, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Female rappers are always more interesting.

Too $hort is underrated.

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Music" for children made by cartoon characters.

Pump Wellington, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rap? Hey bud, where I come from, they spell it with a capital "C"! C- R-A-P. Get it? Hahahahaha!

Michael Daddino, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oops. I honestly thought that this was "say something boring about hip-hop" thread.

Something interesting about hip-hop: I used to go to the same mall Chuck D did.

Michael Daddino, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sterling, you are totally correct on Too $hort. Have you heard "2 Bitches"?

Tim, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For a while I was reading "BoC" as Blue Oyster Cult, and all I could think was that I missed a very atypical one of their releases.
