jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 10 April 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

Chuck played the Great Society's cover of "Sally Go 'Round the Roses" and it made me very very happy.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Sunday, 10 April 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

The Kid Creole tracks would ruin all the rest for me.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Sunday, 10 April 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I didn't know anybody could hate Kid Creole that much! I've always found Darnell's cleverness kinda precious (I do like the first Dr. Buzzard album and the first Kid Creole album and the Cory Daye album and the Don Armando's Second Avenue Rumba Band album and a couple other things here and there, like, you know, "Me No Pop I" by Coati Mundi); I don't think he's anywhere near as compelling as Christgau used to act like he was back in the '80s, but he never seemed like somebody whose music could totally ruin somebody's night. Anyway, I played "No Fish Today" last night; lots of the crowd there seems to enjoy vaguely reggae-leaning stuff, so what the hell. Nobody complained, but maybe it's a good thing you weren't there, Bob Six.

A Chuck Eddy all back to mine mix cd is urgent and key for those who can't afford the flight to NYC.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 10 April 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Doubt there's much of a demand, actually, but if I ever put a mix CD out it sure won't be called "Back To Mine" (since I never understood what the heck that is supposed to mean. I kinda like the New Order and Faithless ones, though.)

xhuxk, Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

for whatever it's worth, this is how my set started out:

chain gang - mondo manhattan (starting with spoken word part about landlords & gentrification in the lower east side and the rich living off the poor, which pretty much cleared all the yuppies out of the bar within mere minutes)
death comet crew - at the marble bar
grandmaster flash and the furious five - scorpio
dennis coffey and the detroit guitar band - scorpio
bar-kays - son of shaft
beginning of the end - funky nassau

i forget what i played after that....probably something vaguely caribbean.

another part of the set went like this:

garland jeffreys - wild in the streets
dwight yoakam and buck owens - streets of bakersfield
paul simon - me and julio down by the schoolyard
bananarama - long train running
david johansen - swaheto woman
chas jankel - glad to know you
j geils band - flamethrower
grandmaster flash and the furious five - it's nasty
charles wright and the watts 103rd street rhythm band - express yourself
jethro tull - teacher
bang - lions, christians
jim carrol band - people who died
kings - this beat goes on/switchin to glide
a's - grounded/twist and shout interpolation
streetheart - baby's got a gun
babys - head first
steve miller band - take the money and run
trickeration - western gangster town
indeep - buffalo bill
malcolm mclaren - buffalo gals (with radio station scratching intro)
skatt bros - life at the outpost
village people - go west

and one span later in the night went like this:

change - glow of love
teena marie - lips 2 find u
aerosmith - chip away at the stone
rockets - oh well
thin lizzy - boys are back in town
great society - sally go round the roses
head east - never been any reason
hall and oates - it's a laugh
10cc - rubber bullets
electric light orchestra - calling america
diesel - sausalito summernight
philip bailey and phil collins - easy lover
kool and the gang - misled
spoonie gee - the godfather of rap
jimmy castor bunch - the return of leroy pt 1
schooly d - saturday night
epmd - strictly business
the wailers - i shot the sheriff
dillinger - cokane in my brain
dave and ansil collins - double barrel

(these are from memory, but i'm pretty sure they're fairly accurate)
