So, How Many ILMers Are Attending EMP...And How Many Have Finished Writing Their Papers?

I just pretty much finished mine today...all about metal T-shirts and why non-metalheads (particularly teengirl pop-marionette singers) shouldn't be allowed to wear them. I'm gonna revise tomorrow, and then I'm gonna put it away and pack for Seattle.

Who else is still writing? Anybody planning on writing theirs on the plane?

um, but, surely, teengirl pop-marionette singers are the only people that should wear metal tshirts?

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

I thought I was turning in my chapter on Friday and would have this week to work on my talk some more (which is half written). Now I am having to cycle back and forth between writing my dissertation and writing my talk. It's getting very schizophrenic.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

yeah, teengirl pop stars are truer to hair metal than metal is these days. you are so frigging wrong dude.

I can't find a good picture of Stewart from Beavis and Butthead anywhere on the web.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

actually if any metal bands had balls these days (which they don't) they would wear those cool ashlee simpson t-shirts with the anarchy symbol on it.

o.e.d., Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

like Thurston's Madonna t-shirt? Did he have balls?

Wait, are you secretly Alex in NYC?

I have no paper and I'm not attending. But this very phrase now reminds me of academic conferences I've attended and I larf a bit.

"like Thurston's Madonna t-shirt? Did he have balls? "

20 years ago, when his band didn't stink? Sure! But even by the time he covered "Into the Groove" Madonna was considered way more "respectable" than Ashlee is now. So I don't think I understand the comparison.

papers?!?!?!?!

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 9 April 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Scratchings.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 April 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Hi, Jess!

>Wait, are you secretly Alex in NYC?

Dude, you have no idea. I'm so rockist I make Alex in NYC look like a TRL co-host.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 10 April 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

But you sound like a Beastie Boy, therefore lacking Alex's edge. For shame!

Plus-Tech Whiz Kid (Disco) (Barima), Sunday, 10 April 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

gonna start writing tonight after some loosely planned show-going

I just read my talk aloud- what I have takes 17 minutes to read. I figure I had better stop soon as it's pretty goddamn tacky to go too long, right? That's the one mortal sin at conferences, I reckon (as "being boring" is subjective and mileage may vary).

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 10 April 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Still adding stuff, fearing I'm only gonna tell people stuff they already know.

*sigh*

hence my being up at 3:18am Sunday morning

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Sunday, 10 April 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

we get 20 mins each, Drew, you'll be going under that at 17.

Just talk very sloooooowly so you can stretch it to 20 minutes. You'll also appear very *smrat* this way.

I've only once attended a conference and mainly to snigger at Serge Simonart's consistent name-dropping. "Oh I was at this party with Bobby DeNiro." "When I interviewed Prince..." blahblahblah.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Monday, 11 April 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

When I read mine aloud yesterday, it was about 21-22 minutes, but I'm probably gonna get nervous and read faster when I'm actually at the thing, so I should be fine.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 11 April 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Well, if the piece is centering around Darby Crash... shouldn't Drew make it an anxious 15 minute read, then take off his shirt, break a beer bottle on the stage, and commence rolling around in the shards for the remaining 5 minutes?

(It's only a suggestion.)

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 11 April 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Working on mine. All of a sudden secondary sources for it are pouring in...

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 11 April 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 11 April 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)
