Can't Buy A Thrill
Katy Lied
Countdown to Ecstacy
Pretzel Logic
Aja
The Royal Scam
Gaucho
Everything Must Go
Two Against Nature (I am going by the songs from it on the TAN DVD, it might raise in stature once I finally get around to buying it.)

I'd actually rank The Royal Scam at least third, probably second behind Aja. The rest of the rankings, I dunno.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Sunday, 10 April 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

didn't we do this?

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 10 April 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

I searched for "rank steely dan" in keywords. Hmm.

I like the lyrics and singing on Aja a lot. If the production sounded like CBAT it would be my number one.

@@r0n h. z@nd3r$ (AaronHz), Sunday, 10 April 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

You can never have enough threads about Steely Dan.

@@r0n h. z@nd3r$ (AaronHz), Sunday, 10 April 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh, there was an OPO recently. This was my post:

"If I had heard Katy Lied or Pretzel Logic first I doubt I would have bought the others..."

Ha - those were the first two I heard!

Same here,
KATY LIED

-- Dr. Z Indahouse (aaronh...), February 1st, 2005.

I do like CBAT slightly more at this point. Katy might make a comeback.

@@r0n h. z@nd3r$ (AaronHz), Sunday, 10 April 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

My OPO song? Fuckin' BARRYTOWN.

@@r0n h. z@nd3r$ (AaronHz), Sunday, 10 April 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Should I buy Aja besides the fact that I have the same name. Is it really good?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 10 April 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

It beats Nirvana.

(kidding; it's great. Get it/download it)

Masked Gazza, Sunday, 10 April 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather buy it.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 10 April 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

1. Countdown to Ecstasy
2. Can't Buy a Thrill
3. Pretzel Logic
... the rest

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 10 April 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

(Though if I had to include The Nightfly it would probably go between 2 and 3 on that list.)

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 10 April 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

ooh this is hard! I might end up posting a completely different ranking later...

Countdown
Pretzel
Thrill
Aja
Katy
Scam
Gaucho
Everything
Two Against

I guess that's a fairly typical critical consensus kind of ranking. Maybe I'd rank "Pretzel" #1 if I had it on CD.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Sunday, 10 April 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

There's nothing wrong with ranking Countdown first. Bodhisattva contains their best actual music.

I don't have either of the last two albums, is why they're not on my list. I might get around to them one of these days, but I really hated the song "Cousin Dupree," so I'm skittish.

"Pixeleen" still sounds like the best track. Everyone download that one if you haven't heard it.

@@r0n h. z@nd3r$ (AaronHz), Sunday, 10 April 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah, 2AN isn't so good, with a couple exceptions(almost gothic, west of hollywood), but EMG is totally solid.

Pixeleen is INCREDIBLE! there's an old dan thread around where i go on and on about it. It sounds like a luxury sedan. is it about pornography? there's definitely something exploitative going on. and so so smooth. 'symmetrical and clean'.

The lyric to the title track is great too. Also search an old thread where j0hn and jody try to work out The Last Mall, IIRC. wonderful imagery, very apocalyptic, shopping as religion/religion as shopping: which is the conflation? at the end of all things, we make our amends not with the priests, but with the checkout girls.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

those guys are so fucking good at lyrics. Is it mostly Fagen or do they bounce things off each other a la TMBG? I think I used to know the answer to this but I spaced it.
