Taking Sides: Weezer Vs Kenickie

Weezer are fucking awful. The Buddy Holly song is bareable if you're drunk but the shitty new song at the Playboy mansion (memo to band: If you're at the Playboy mansion your credibility is dead) is the worst song this year.

Kenickie are ropey but they had Acetone and Lauren Laverne's legs making them the easy winner. For her legs mostly.

i think both are fine, in a sort of easy backgroundy style, and both sort of survived the 90s without looking too bad (perhaps because neither were vaunted too much, at least in the uk). weezer had one great song, 'only in dreams' on the first lp, which is sort of atypical, being rather long and almost postrocky, a bit like mogwai playing in that bar they go to in buffy

kenickie had the sense to stop. most bands should do this. so they havent really got any embarrassing records. weezer continued, and i havent really heard anything of their last couple records, and dont really have any intention to. i think they were kind of brassy and fun, and a little bit sad underneath, and, sometimes, thats enough

L'extraordinaire Petros (gareth), Sunday, 10 April 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Weezer had good songs - the second half of "Pinkerton" is very good indeed, but Kenickie did "I Would Fix You" so they win.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 10 April 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

my last comment was meant to be about kenickie. but i guess its sort of aobut weezer too, perhaps

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 10 April 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

I doubt very much that Rivers Cuomo has the media-savvy to helm any of the myriad of fuck-awful late night TV shows Ms Laverne is on nowadays.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 10 April 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

Plus "Undone" is better than "Punka"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 10 April 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

Lauren is on XFM every day. Her golden voice is alas easier to listen to than their playist.

Get the distinct impression she just doesn't want to sell out to Radio 1 (they would SO poach her, is there any doubt? Edith Bowman and the monkey? JK & fucking Joel?? come ON). I think she has too much class maybe.

Very, very little is better than PUNKA.

Weezer have a hell of a lot of obsessed fans, and have enjoyed MTV support from day one. Kenickie are woefully underappreciated (never polished, easy or simple enough to really go big esp. in the dark ages of Britpop).

Kenickie by miles.

Dom P... If you have love for The Faders how can you not appreciate Kenickie? Apologies if I'm getting you mixed up with some other guy.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 10 April 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

I just realised your first comment was in fact a compliment of sorts. Excuse the knee-jerking.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 10 April 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

Dom told me he wanted the hot goth chick from the Faders to be the next Pope.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 10 April 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

The Faders better fucking make it to an album so we can have a thread about them.

Taking sides: Johnny X vs. That bloody amazing drummer that totally makes the one Faders song I like.

(x-post) they've been on TOTP! With their first(?) single! How are they not going to put an album out? Whether it'll be any good....

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 10 April 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 10 April 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

But Dom have you heard Kim Lian(?) yet?

Aqua meets Avril!

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 10 April 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

My poptimist tendencies don't stretch as far as Lolly, so I've been avoiding her.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 10 April 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

I've got big hopes for Bloke though. Like Everclear produced by The Matrix.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 10 April 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

Bloke are quite spectacularly for a girl group though. Possibly hence the name.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 10 April 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

*spectacularly ugly

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 10 April 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

wisty - this means I'm going to have to put Kim Lian in the Jukebox next week, doesn't it? I'd suggest you apologise to the rest of the group in advance.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 10 April 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

In the ideal world all bands would be as good as The Killers. I know.

Nam-C, Sunday, 10 April 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

It does Will and one person will be attempting to give her 11 out of 10.

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 10 April 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Kim Lian is launching in the UK? Hooray! If you'd heard it way back when you'd either be dreading its crossover or WAITING WITH BAITED BREATH.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 10 April 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

kenickie haters are... not right in the head.

"Teenage Superstar" is out in the UK tomorrow. She was on Pop World this morning her boyfriend from Sweden wrote it. Have we heard of him before? Is he from the Matrix or Cheiron? And why has it taken so long to launch her over here? I first downloaded "Teenage Superstar" about a year ago.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 10 April 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and I'd pick Weezer over Kenickie, although they weren't bad.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 10 April 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

in what world did weezer ever have credibility? they were/are INcredible!

irrigation can save your people (irrigation can save your peopl), Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Acetone and I Would Fix You and Millionaire Sweeper are all pretty good. The only thing I know about Weezer is that people sing "The Sweater Song" in the hallways at school sometimes. I don't like those people.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Weezer. Kenickie were cool though and I'm totally in love with Lauren.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Shit, how do you post pictures (I've been here long enough, I should know this by now...).

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Any Kenickie interview ever is more entertaining than every Weezer song put together.

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 11 April 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

best thread ever.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 11 April 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

Lauren Laverne once told me to fuck off, to my knowledge Rivers Cuomo never has. Therefore, Weezer.

(shame she never got an album out before the piss poor meejah career took over though, that EP was promising)

DGJ, Monday, 11 April 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Easy, Kenickie.

They're probably the only nearly-all-girls group that I've ever really liked.

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 11 April 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

are J Xaverre any good?

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 11 April 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

Are?

On the subject of upcoming girl-mit-guitar bands, Jesus Christ this shower look like they're going to be awful:

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

i like several of j xaverre's singles, love "great all great" because it reminds me of elk city's "freeze two over eight" which is one of my favourite ever songs. don't know what the album's like though.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

wow one of the Pure T's fave acts include Rooster and Sting, really, makes you yearn for the wisdom and wit of Amy Studt...
