They played a clip of this recently.
Is anyone on the Jeopardy staff a big Melvins fan?

rupert, Sunday, 10 April 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

hhahaha i remember that episode!

latebloomer: strawman knockdowner (latebloomer), Sunday, 10 April 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Pleeze elaborate.

Chris Marx, Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Probably the same guy who was a Joy Division fan and made three of the categories the other day related to JD.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

clip?

anthony, Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

we must know more. don't leave us dangling.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 10 April 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

it was on 'power players week' a few years back(yesterday they just played part of the clip ending with his insult as a "jeopardy's greatest moments bumper). It was an audio clue that went something like "The Melvins, heard here, was part of this early 90's musical movement" and then they played the clip of some Melvins song. Since the celebrity jeopardy contestants are given license to crack wise and putz around and since he couldn't even begin to guess the answer, he just offered: "I dunno but that song sucked", for which I can't blame him, not that it was all that funny. From what I heard I would have guessed 'grunge' but I'm not familiar with the Melvins.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Fuck does Bill Maher know about anything? His idea of good music is invariably the Eagles or some crap, so fuck him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

eagles >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> melvins

xhuxk, Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

not that i'm defending bill maher, who i really couldn't care less about. but if he said a melvins song sucked, odds are pretty much in his favor that he was right.

xhuxk, Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

I've somehow never even heard the Melvins. Someone give me a POV to download...

@@r0n h. z@nd3r$ (AaronHz), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I have to admit that the Melvins don't really have that much to do with grunge-as-"90s-musical-movement"

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

I mean REM was a big influence on Kurt too

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

well, they did come from seattle. and they kept making bad loud sludgy records throughout the '90s. so that's kinda grunge, when you think about it.

xhuxk, Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Layne Staley give Trebek the finger on Celeb Jeopardy once? I've read rumors about that.

billstevejim, Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, Layne Staley got on Celebrity Jeopardy?

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Exactly.

billstevejim, Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

The Eagles are crap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was going to say something about that Eagles thing, but I nearly ended up posting something about how I wanted to bomb the oldies station that won't stop playing "Take It Easy" and I thought people might take me serious.y

billstevejim, Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

That song's not so bad.

@@r0n h. z@nd3r$ (AaronHz), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

WRONG!!!

The Scottish Restauranteer (ex machina), Monday, 11 April 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

Late 80's Melvins albums "Gluey Porch Treatments" and "Ozma" were a indeed part of what became, or influenced, "Grunge". Those albums were right there with Mudhoney and Soundgarden's first EPs when they came out.

You may consider them sucky, or a bit of a joke, but it's not incorrect that they were part of the scene.

I'm not sure if the dopey "Kurt loved REM" comment is supposed to mean that Grunge = Kurt, but that would be laughably wrong as usual.

Oh, and Fuck Bill Maher and the Eagles, they both suck it.

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Monday, 11 April 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

"well, they did come from seattle."

The Melvins are from Washington, but they never lived in Seattle. They were based in San Francisco when the whole thing blew up in the early 90s.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I remember this clip! Wasn't it Dennis Miller though? I hope so because I think that we can all agree that he sucks waaaaaay more than both Bill Maher and the Melvins.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Monday, 11 April 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

I think both that the Melvins could appreciate a lyric like "Well I'm a-runnin' down the road, tryin' to loosen my load...", wouldn't they?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 11 April 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

The Melvins are legends. Fuck comedians who try joke their way out of being ignorant. A POV for whoever wanted one:

"Heater Moves And Eyes"
"Claude"
"Anaconda"
"Antitoxidote" (just listened to this today- jesus the fuckin' bass!!)
"Honey Bucket"

"With Teeth" is one of my faves but its just the last "section" of the classic one-track Lysol record. Just get all of Lysol, fuckit.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 11 April 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

I had a rough night and I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Monday, 11 April 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

I bet you Buzzo was watching this at home, and he was absolutely flattered.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 11 April 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

Also, Buzzo does better stand-up comedy than Bill Maher... he exhibited it for about 15-20 minutes at the Capitol Hill Block party in Seattle last summer, to begin a live Melvins set, while the audience kept on screaming "JUST FUCKING... PLAY!!!", Buzzo blissfully ignoring the heckling.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 11 April 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

now when i'm making a "sponge" for my sourdough and cleaving it in half with my breadtool, you know what i'll sadly be seeing instead

hahahqahaha

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

Much as I dig Bill Maher, I don't think I would ever assume his taste in music exceeds his sense of humor. Now if it had been Belushi, or Bill Hicks, heck, I might listen. (God, that's so sad that the arbiters of taste are pushing daisies. Goddammit).

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

I remember this clip! Wasn't it Dennis Miller though? I hope so because I think that we can all agree that he sucks waaaaaay more than both Bill Maher and the Melvins.

No waaaaaaay, Dennis Miller's "Off White Album" is one of the most unrelenting and savagely funny performances I've ever heard. It's absurdist and mean, and regardless of the man's politics or personality (a friend said he mowed her down on some slopes in Big Bear, and he didn't apologize, just like "outta the way") it's better than anything I've heard from maher's mouth or the melvins amps.

This has nothing to do with the subject header, I know. I just wanted to plug the record.

Bjorn Deleuze (Ocelot Wildly), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

I remember Maher saying on Politically Incorrect "Kurt Cobain only had one album."

Dennis Miller made his rep as a 'smart' comedian by riffing on old sitcoms. Only in America, land of the post-literate.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Sure, you may find Bill Maher to be unfunny, smug, arrogant, offensive, and detestable, but fucking DENNIS MILLER. COME THE FUCK ON PEOPLE. He was not only bar none the worst anchor on Weekend Update ever ever the references he tries to drop - jesus lord, it could maybe only work if he was trying to parody other "I'M SMART" comics.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

eleven months pass...
First off, let's set the record straight by noting that the Melvins are simply amazing. Anyone wanting to check them out should listen to 'Houdini', their first major label album. Probably their most accessible to start with. After that, check out "Bullhead" or "Ozma".

Bill Maher, Dennis Miller and the Eagles all suckle the left testicle of Dale Crover while King Buzzo yells about it. That would be a song.

Fuck comedians who try joke their way out of being ignorant.

On the NewsRadio DVD commentary, someone says something like, "this looks like a bad Bjork video," and Joe Rogan goes, "Is there such a thing as a GOOD Bjork video?" To which few of the others (I think Andy Dick and Dave Foley) reply: "Um, yeah, she has some great ones... Michel Gondry directed a bunch of them..." So Rogan says, "OK, you win - I've never actually seen a Bjork video." (This is all paraphrased as best as I remember it, but the point is: Joe Rogan in being an asshat shocka.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

I am still 95% sure that Dennis Miller is the asshole in question here.

He didn't die! He recently was involved (co-writing and directing) with this play about an '80s female rock band reuniting:
