scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 10 April 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 10 April 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

He is one of the few high profile critics that i take seriously, as he is prepared to do research, has an openmind and manifests individuality.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 10 April 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

I care.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 10 April 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Good discussion in Italian of the entire Zoogz Rift discography.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 10 April 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

his 80's list has almost every one of my fave 80's records on it. i probably own, like, 200 records on that list. and have probably owned 200 more in the past that i sold or got rid of:

http://www.scaruffi.com/ratings/1980.html

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 10 April 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

wow, that's weird. i tried to cut and paste that long-ass list, but it was taking too long so i just posted a link to it. and when i come back it is magically just THERE ahead of my last post. ILX is voodoo! and ILX has obviously made me list-crazy. oh well.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 10 April 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

It's a pretty useful resource. And admirably all-encompassing.

Pros:
Concise, very healthy level of detachment and skepticism.
Gives good, plain descriptions of the music being reviewed and explanations of the creators intentions. These things are often needed in regular music journalism but not found, due to the different audiences intended.

Cons:
Patronising tendency to bang on about 'overated-ness' of certain critically popular artists & make assumptions that the poor uneducated reader hasn't heard better or similar artists.

Uneasy (rockist?) ideas about studio production being separate from musical ideas.

Some of his music 'history' (especially around 90's techno) is very 'learnt', after the fact and academic. That said it's interesting to read how he puts the pieces together.

mrs. scaruffi, Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

>explanations of the creators intentions.

I love this aspect... it's getting rare in criticism

I like his take & it's solid work

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 11 April 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

He's a good writer, even if his allergy for pop music is somewhat funny (but this was the typical attitude of the 70's Italian critic).
also, his hate for the Beatles is almost legendary: he sincerely thinks the Fab Four were nothing more than a twisted MI5 plot to conquer the world.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Monday, 11 April 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Scaruffi is a poor Idiot

scaruffi, Monday, 11 April 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
ahhaha well damn
use the basis of that old (comprehensive) thread to elaborate on um, my um new question. heh

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

How come no one ever lists Scaruffi when they mention famous folk who have posted here!

Scaruffi is a legend of the internet, and I've always enjoyed his site a lot. Can't find where/when he posted on ilm though.

He actually was the founder of IRE.

Hmm. Why does Scaruffi rate John Cougar's Scarecrow as the 52nd AND the 133rd best record of 1985? A typo, I guess, but you wouldn't expect the duplicated record would be separated by 80 other albums.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 17 October 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, I'm just being pissy. His site is really informative, and the reviews are very well-written.

He just doesn't praise all the albums I like, hence the snippyness.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 17 October 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

why does john cougar's scarecrow get rated at all

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah. There are some head-scratching choices in his lists.

I'm reading his behemoth " History of Rock" right now and I am just simply astonished at the level of this guy's erudition and clarity, not to mention unflinching originality. What a breath of fresh air ! I haven't even started looking at his scientific research but seriously did this guy step out of a Borges story ? Has anyone else read his work, any comments on this genius ?

oscar, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

His Beatles analysis is freaking ridiculous.

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

Agreed. Yeah I was put off by his whole anti Beatles stance and dont think his thesis on them holds water. However, there's something refreshing about his writing, maybe its the mixture of erudition, passion and detachment, i dont know. He holds some unorthodox opinions like the Beatles ones for instance, but for the most part this guy arguments are braver, better researched and more cogent than most critics out there.

oscar, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

his fondness for tim buckley is pretty excessive. sure, the man was good, but if you're going to slam the beatles and all

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 03:12 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i wonder where that spleen for the Beatles comes from. i mean I read other chapters and there is none of that straight up irrationalism. basically it almost sounds personal. anyways, for some reason i kind of dig that idiosyncrasy/delusion about him, it almost makes the rest of his work that much more peculiar and compelling.

I've enjoyed Scrafuffi's site off and on for years, and indeed there's a lot of information. But in the end, the information's there to be used for those who want to do more intelligent syntheses of popular-music history. I've got a link to it from my web site, but I still think of it as a curio, if not a freak show.

Oscar says he's "better researched" than most. Yes. But engaging in extensive research is not the same as historical knowledge - that is, presenting information in a coherent manner.

Since Scaruffi's disdain for The Beatles was brought up (I had not noticed this before) one only needs to read the passage I've quoted below:

"Furthermore, the Beatles represented the reaction against a social and political revolution. They arrived at the time of the student protests, of Bob Dylan, of the Hippies, and they replaced the image of angry kids with their fists in the air, with their cordial faces and their amiable declarations. They came to replace the accusatory words of militant musicians with overindulgent nursery rhymes. In this fashion as well the Beatles served as middle-class tranquilizers, as if to prove the new generation was not made up exclusively of rebels, misfits and sexual maniacs."

Saying the hippies came before the Beatles is of course totally off. Morever, if the "student protests" he's talking about are SDS or Fair Play for Cuba, maybe even the nascent free speech movement, then OK, maybe... but those types weren't listening to The Beatles, or if they did, then didn't put much thought into it. But of course, if you speak so obtusely, if not metaphorially, about "student protests" in the '60s, the implicit association made is of late '60s anti-war protests. And in that case, again the chronology is fucked up.

Besides most of the radicals of the '60s were themselves "middle class tranquilizers" compared to the radicals of previous generations.

Like I said, pillage the site for info. Ignore the broad conclusions.

Yeah I guess that's what I meant about his Borgesian qualities. He strikes me as more of a medieval archivist than a conventional academic music historian. Either way, am loving his book right now, warts and all.

oscar, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 03:41 (eighteen years ago)

"yeah i wonder where that spleen for the Beatles comes from. i mean I read other chapters and there is none of that straight up irrationalism. basically it almost sounds personal"

In some ways, it is his more Italian feature.

Marco Damiani, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 07:01 (eighteen years ago)

The last time I pored through his site at length was in 2004 or 2005. A frustrating percentage of the reviews were in Italian only... is more of it translated now?

I love this site

I usually end up using Google Translate to delve into the Italian-only sections, which can yield funny (and confusing!) results
